RIM brags to employees about celeb BlackBerry users

Celebrity BlackBerry Users

Throughout the ages, mothers have always lectured their kids about the virtues of modesty, but it looks like some employees working at RIM never got that little nugget of advice. In a PowerPoint presentation courtesy of a RIM ninja, RIM shamefully proudly displays images of Lindsay Lohan, Michael Phelps, Cameron Diaz, John Mayer, Brad & Angelina, and Jessica Alba. But it gets even more lame. In a presentation note the following is written:

“In Australia, we have celebrities such as Jennifer Hawkins and Jamie Jury using BB
Micheal Phelps got a message on his BB from the president after winning 8 gold medals at recent olympics!!!!” [sic]

Look, all companies are proud when celebrities use and endorse their products because it means that they 1) have a degree of “cool” to them (whatevz, but it’s true), and 2) there are legions of obsessive fans out there who buy whatever their favorite starlets have. But the fact that there are people at RIM who get such a hard-on from celebrities that they start using paparazzi photos, misspelling names like Michael, and have to include not one but three exclamation marks is just absurd.

Celebrities of all kinds use Blackberries because they just work.

Oh man, get a grip on reality. You act as if celebrities are some of kind of totally brilliant folk who would never pick a substandard device. Please, these devices were given to these turds, free of charge. Why do you think there are so many celebrity sitings with the Bold months ago when it hasn’t been released yet.

First of all this was an intertanl presentation for employees only. I’d like to know what RIM employee doesn’t have a Blackberry and is RUSHING out to buy one RIGHT NOW because they just saw Jessica Alba with one. Dear god.

Second of all, since when is it illegal or obsurd to use “starlets” to promote products? Everyone and their dog does it. Clothing lines, sports drinks, APPLE, shoe companies, hell even chewing gum companies. I could go on forever.

Your article looks a bit rediculous now don’tcha think?

BGR takes too long to load, and the site has gone down. I only started looking at this site for a couple of months now, and i am starting to not “feel” this site anymore. its going downhill, and if you guys dont fix the pageload time or calm down on the biases and mixed opinions, i dont want to come here any more, and im pretty sure theres plenty of others who feel the same way.

(this probably wont even make post)

What I find lame is that the “celebs” get these phones first and free (and for what?) when there are “regular” people waiting to PAY for them.

So why isn’t it shameless to promote BGR Radio with celebs:
“We’ve got awesome interviews with Mary J. Blige, Kim Kardashian, and the one and only Carmelo Anthony. Yep, they’re big BGR fans, and we got the goods out of them in our interview.”

That’s like RIM putting Jessica Alba on their home page (which is not a bad idea!!! (yes that’s three exclamation marks))

John Mayer’s tours are sponsored by Blackberry so of course he’s going to be using one in public.

Sucks that John Mayer performed for Apple less than two years ago for the iPhone announcement only to jump ship for a sponsorship from the competition.

Such is the industry, I suppose.

Umm, maybe BGR is on to something… PEOPLE using a device that actually WORKS!..
I can see how STUPID it is for a company to promote the FREE publicity that FAMOUS people are giving away for FREE…

I don’t see why this is an issue or even an article for that matter, I bet in every company you have the sales/marketting departments being briefed on the message they should be getting across and the point behind that slide seems to imply that Rim wants their people to get over the message that their products are also cool as well as simply being great devices.
