Samsung is back in the U.S. notebook business

Samsung has announced a new set of notebooks and are hoping to steal a little of Apple’s thunder (good luck with that one!). The new line-up should see some pretty sleek, thin, lightweight laptops with loads of power – definitely nothing to sneeze at. Samsung’s main target is the Macbook Air and it is hoping that its new X-Series netbook will the a “Macbook Air Killer.” Really, guys? Everything seems to be a “killer” of some sort these days though many products fail to even bruise each other – let’s see if Samsung is up to the task. The X360 will be going for $2,499 and will be carrying 128GB of solid state goodness. Weighing in at 2.8 pounds, your spaghetti arms should have no problems with it. The X360 also claims to have 6 to 10 hours of battery life depending on usage – not bad at all. If you’ve been looking for an alternative to the MacBook Air this looks like it might be a good contender, but a killer it is not.

I have a close friend who has a Mac book Air and I’m impressed with the screen, but that’s it. The price on it was ridiculous and the attachable USB DVD drive doesn’t even work 25% of the time. I don’t know if this is typical or an isolated occurrence, but for a product that costs that much….give me a break. I’m not saying there is something that fits its nitch that is “better”, but I know there are more reliable products out there for less.

Sony TZ is an Air killer. Then again their ultraportables were always superior. They’re just a premium.

Yeah I definitely would prefer a VAIO TZ over the MacBook Air. At least some models have a built-in drive.

And actually, I think netbooks do just fine fitting in the “niche” that the Air does. I mean, honestly, who’s going to be doing any heavy-duty data-processing or video-editing on the Air?

Furthermore, I think companies are missing the point when it comes to being an “Air or iPhone killer.” It’s not about the specs, but it’s the simple and elegant design that win people over, not necessarily that this thing has more ports and comes in multiple colors of plastic.

John: I assure you that if the Air’s detachable drive only worked 75% of the time, it would’ve been all over sites like this one.

As far as the cost of the Air is concerned, you can get one for $100 than a TZ that has 20% slower processor. . .but hey, that disc drive is REALLY important, right? Oh yeah, you need that drive to reinstall Windows for the umpteenth time so that it stops telling you about that file it can’t find.

Perspective: I get what you were trying to say in your second paragraph. The detachable DVD player is $100 bucks, and the sony has a 20% slower processor. Right?

Windows is flawed. That’s not important.

I myself feel that a laptop in this “nitch” should have a DVD drive for say….watching movies on a plane, ease of uploading new software, ripping music to your computer, etc. I support you in feeling contrary to that.

Oh gosh people can we please stop exaggerating how buggy Windows is? I’ve had to reinstall Windows once on my Dell–while that may be one too many for you, my MacBook toting friend had to reinstall OS X on hers just recently too.

As for the disc-drive, while it’s not essential, it is nice to have. Like John pointed out, I’d like to be able to watch DVDs or burn CDs I just bought or haven’t had the time to burn onto my $1800 laptop.

I wish everyone would stop using the “killer” description because its never ever true. I guess its a lazy persons way of describing competition but its lame.

The MacBook Air was never really the champion for it to be “killed”. Sony’s TZ was always the leader so this article should’ve referred to that. But once again, this site’s affinity with Apple makes them not care about what makes sense and they tout every type of news, whether it deals with Apple or not, Apple-worthy.
