T-Mobile USA Releases BlackBerry 8220 Pearl Flip

The BlackBerry 8220 Pearl Flip - it’s truly a smartphone that you’re going to love or hate without any middle ground. But hate it or love it it’s finally now available on good ole’ T-Mobile USA. Available today in Black for $149.99 on a 2-year contract, the Pearl Flip is going to take the cell phone market for 13-year old girls by storm. And if black isn’t your thing, (no, we’re not playing the race card) you’ll be able to buy the red version come October 20th. You already know the specs by now, but to freshen your memory, the Pearl Flip’s got a 2 megapixel shooter, Wi-Fi with Hotspot@Home support, a SureType keyboard, and that oh-so-old-yet-2008 flip design.

Its nice to see a new blackberry sporting the 4.6 handheld software released here in the US. I would have thought that ATT would be first to offer this software with the Bold. The Bold is overrated and besides having 3G and GPS its features are the very similar to the pearl flip. By the time that ATT is ready to release their US exclusive Blackberry Bold both T-Mobile and Verizon will be offering exclusive blackberries aswell the “pearl flip” and the “storm”. How funny would it be if T-mobiles “Curve II” is released before ATT’s Bold? Really at this point with how long it is taking for the Bold to be released I wouldn’t be surprise.

RIM and Apple are setting up to split the mobile game in half. Candybar, flip, and touch. Take your choice. All I see nowadays are berries and iphones. Obviously all of us at the office have berries (personal) and the bosses (work), but even the guy driving the shuttle bus on Kennedy was rocking a Curve. My friend’s daughter is only 6 and has the display model berry wanting to be cool.

At this point, it’s just a matter of time.

Seriously guys the “we’re not playing the race card” comment is so played out. Lol You guys use it each time you mention a handset in a different color.

Why is this for “13-year old girls”? Isn’t it a full featured Blackberry?

Or does the writer just not like flip-phones?

The $149 price is TOO HIGH!!!

It should have been $99 for current TMO subscribers and
    $49 for new contracts.

This phone was suppose to covert the masses with regular flip phones to BB flip phones.

    @ Daryl:

I agree this isn’t “girly,” at all.

BGR knows this site is mainly hit by younger males and if there is any way to derail a product not sold by at&t, accusing it of being girly sure will do it.

Sad commentary really. Sometimes reading this and expecting only the facts is like watching Fox news and hope they say something just a little bit positive about democrats. (Not gonna happen) LOL

I’m not really a flip enthusiast, but this Pearl Flip appears to be built solidly and will attract those into the flip form factor. 4.6 and WiFi are the icing on the cake.

T-Mobile has great BIS pricing and likely to attract the small business owner all the way up to the corporate buff who just prefers this style over the bigger calculator style handhelds.

    @Daryl & Gabriel,

Are you serious? You actually think he was derailing this product because its not from ATT? I wouldn’t argue with you in most cases but Im pretty sure that the 13 year old girl comment was because thats exactly how the Pearl turned out. have you not seen all of the little daddy’s girls walking around on their blackberries?

Maybe its just me but i thought it was funny.

    To Queen4111

I think the phone is priced fairly. I understand your view and compaired to any other standard flip phone the price might seem high.

This is still a Blackberry and you shouldn’t be compairing it to a standard flip phone. It’s as much of a PDA as any of the other Blackberry out there. In fact with having the newest software it can do much more than the typical blackberry pearl can. You can record video, it now can stream videos, veiw Html email. it has Wifi and UMA support can and supports 16 G micro sd card.

Its price point is already set lower then any of the other Wifi blackberries out on the market today. I really hope just because it doesn’t look like the typical blackberry that people won’t start concidering and compairing it to just another boring and standard flip phone.

This is a girly BB. It is a flip Pearl. If I had a dollar for every hip 15 girl I’ve seen with a Pearl I could afford a better comparison.

Hell, there are about seven reasons I got rid of my Pearl and one of them is that one day, at band camp, some 15 year old girl held up her Pearl and said, “I’ve got one too.”

I ran screaming, like a girl.

You shouldn’t be judging my post….

The $149 price is too much considering the BB 8320’s were that price in May 08.

Also, you can get a FREE BB from sites such as amazon.com.
    Thank you very much!!! :-p

Already got one for the girlfriend.

    Its surprisingly well built.

Solid frame, no give to the hinge on the flip.

Decent camera, I like the OS upgrade compared to my 8800.

The recessed trackball is easy to get used to.

The new OS really makes me eager for a Storm / Bold / Javelin for a personal blackberry.
