The reason for the success of this phone has nothing to do with its greatness or what people have heard about it. It could have the worst OS in the world and it wouldn’t matter to T-Mobile costumers. I’ve been around them all my life and to them this is just simply the newest Sidekick, and the hottest phone out with a QWERTY keyboard on their network.
T-Mobile costumers only care about the cool factor and being the first with the hottest ‘Sidekick’ out and HTC/Google were smart in making the G1 just that, a new QWERTY phone with a touch screen. The teen crowd loves that and that is why it’s selling out so fast. Every T-Mobile customer I know, unless they are business centric with a Windows Mobile phone, which is like 1%, has already ordered this phone and none of them, honestl, know anything about it. All they know is that it is the newest T-emporary Mobile phone coming out and it looks like the Sidekick. Stroke of genius what HTC did. I hated the design but now I can definitely see why they went that route. If they had brought this phone to any other provider in that form factor it’s selling point would not have been as high…AT ALL.

Nice to G1 begin to emerge past all the pre-pre-pre-release hype. Now it’s just pre-release hype! I don’t care if device good or bad, successful or not, T-Mobile or other carriers. I do love a device that might push the iPhone, Blackberries, WinMobile, etc. We all win with choice and better phones. Except for the jackass-nation that feels compelled to choose a favorite and subsequently find fault will everything else.

Lovers of the G1 – Android = WIN. HTC G1 = LOSS. The phone is the most ugliest phone HTC has come out with in a while, it looks cheap, and I wont ever buy this version, however, thats not saying Android isnt THE BEST OS since…well… EVER!

Haters of the G1 – Apple isnt #1, and likely wont be anytime soon. GET OVER IT. I know many people with the iPhone (I had one for 3 days) and while its nice, its not perfect, no OS is. Its not fair to compare or put down something thats new..especially one that will, and yes, it WILL revolutionize the way we use our phones. GET OVER IT

And lastly, Id like to say… “If you dont like T-Mobile.. DONT FUCKING USE THEM!”

I’m a T-Mobile employee, and have been using the G1 for about a week(in a non-3g market, mind you) and am very impressed with the device overall. There are a few drawbacks I.e. No video capture,no zoom or flash on the camera, no stereo bt etc. But, it does a lot of cool stuff too, like it has an accelorometer for gaming a la itouch, the shop savvy feature which let’s you scan a barcode, the device finds the product on the web for cheaper, lots of cool little android apps that should definitely keep the customers suprised. With that being said, I won’t be purchasing the G1 until my particular market has gone 3g, as I advise others to hold off as well. The web is much slower than my Curve, and you can’t access the gps(unless you want to wait for 5 min) or watch streaming video. I think overall it’s going to be a great device for Tmobile, and can’t wait to see how the Android OS evolves…oh, and by the way, it’s a pretty cool looking phone, definitely not fisher price!

Let’s face it every T-Mobile customer has been waiting forever for this phone and that’s pretty much the number one reason for the 1.5 million preordered. Let’s just remember none of these phones has been sold to anyone but existing T-Mobile customers so far. It hasn’t even been made available to the public yet so this is all just T-Mobile customers getting their “dream” phone. I for one am T-Mobile customer/employee using a 2g iphone but have it sold already for my G1. I have gotten to use the phone for a while and it impressed me. It does have some cons but I am willing to live with those especially if I can live with the flaws that the iphone has. At least now I will never have to worry about an updated software locking my phone or taking away my 3rd party applications just so I can send a mms or record video. Oh and I seriously doubt the T-Mobile customers preordering these phones are ONLY getting them to unlock and sell them over seas. Remember the first apple iphones were made easy to unlock by apple first. Apple allowed people to buy the phone and not sign a contract but activate in store. So you have the perfect phone to sell over seas, but this G1 requires a 2 yr contract so not so many of those will be just to sell.

this phone just “odd” to me, sort of disproportional, especially the ~1/4″ gap between the bottom end of the screen and the row of buttons… the phone simply looks too tall, in respect to its’ width… BUT since i am a sole believer of function>form, i will most likely consider buying this device, especially since it comes in white >:] i am planning to get this or the BB storm by the year’s end…

@melissa and to everyone else thinking I am trashing T-Mobile and the G1…

My post reinforces the popularity of this device, both in my first line and the title of the post itself. Still, it doesn’t change how I feel about the look of the device (”look” not “feel” being the operative word). We’re all major gadget geeks here and we all have particular tastes. This is a solid device and the Android platform will undoubtedly be amazing. I still think the phone could have been sexier, but that’s all a matter of preference. Not hating on G1 or T-Mobile (I’ve been with them for a while).

Granted there are devices floating around the globe that are a bit more aesthetically appealing, I really don’t think this device is as ugly as some people have claimed and definitely doesn’t appear Fisher-Price-looking” especially after playing with this device myself. have you ever actually held, played with or demo’d this device before writing this article?

The device feels really solid in the hands and the call quality sounds great over 3G and EDGE.

My only gripe was that there was no video recording or ST BT out of the box, but these can be added with FW updates or 3rd party content applications so like with anything Android nothing is absolutely final. The platform is open and will always be improving.

And just think, you’ll be able to use all the data you want on the phone, tether to your notebook and get unlimited messaging for $ 35 per month. No need to plunk down $ 60 per month for two years to the at&t on a laptop aircard or usb modem anymore when you got this. And it works over WiFi too to boot.

I’m personally gunning for the white model and will wait till its available at retail outlets to make my move.

1.5 million units pre-ordered does seem like an inflated number. I am curious to see how many of these get unlocked and make their way overseas. It could be worse that the first gen iPhone because the price point is lower. Time will tell!

@Fireeye Thanks for the input. First off, my name is spelled with the letter “c” as shown in my comments and under the author list. I think my grammar and grasp of the English is perfectly fine, but if you want to nitpick, you should learn how to use capital letters after periods. In English, we typically use capital letters to start a sentence.

We also prefer “secondly” to “2ndly.” The latter being known as “txt tlk” is typically frowned upon amongst writers with half a brain. Lastly, the phrase “you have clearly not actually held one in your hands” is grammatically incorrect. It’s quite horrid, actually.

Any real source on this? The story references a guy’s blog … no doubt the G1’s doing well, but 1.5 sounds like an awful lot considering the phone isn’t that sexy, and the Android platform is hard to market to a mass market.

Seriously though, T-Mobile sold about 600,000 smartphones in last quarter. This just seems a bit too much. The iPhone 3G sold 1 million in 3 days in multiple markets, is the G1 really getting more than that in one market?

That is true–there’s no barrage of TV or internet ads for this thing like with the iPhone or Blackberrys, yet this thing’s selling like hotcakes. I guess it’s just goes to show the power of Google!
