Confirmed: No HTC Touch HD love for the US
It looks like US all of the commotion caused by the Android-powered HTC G1 made HTC completely forget about releasing the company’s sexy Touch HD here in the US. According to an HTC employee who has probably been convinced by a PR firm to “get more involved with the social web”, HTC’s much sought after Touch HD will not be making an official appearance in the US. Via Twitter, HTC has stated that it is too late to begin the process of landing approval to sell the Touch HD in the US and therefore it will simply skip it. Apparently HTC is already working on some other handsets, hopefully rocking Android, that it will grace the US market with and so by the time the Touch HD is ready to go it will be old news. Those of us who were looking forward to that beautiful 480 x 800 pixel WVGA display will either have to buy an import sans-compatible 3G or just do our best to put this beauty out of mind and wait to see what HTC has in store for us moving forward. All we know is it damn well better not be the Opal.

Why in the bloody hell would a announcement like this be sent via Twitter? Give us the Touch HD geez. **Screw Android, I’ll take WM anyday**
I’ll take WinMo too but they’re probably right. They’d have to go through FTC, then selecting carrier and all that other stuff…I still wouldn’t mind having it but with how fast HTC churns out its phones I won’t be surprised if a better handset comes out in about a month for the US.
“sad news US, we looked into it”–translates–”you can go F*&K yourself”
“we do have other cool stuff coming”–translates–”but it won’t work on your networks”
If I import the HTC Touch HD will it work on Sprints network because I need a new sprint device
Young Veyron, the Touch HD won’t work but you’ve got the Touch Pro coming to Sprint this month at least.
I’m all for android and all, but why wouldnt htc try to release this phone as the first android device? it’s completely sexy, and android or not, it would have been an awesome phone. the g1 is cool and all, very functional, but lacks everything eye catching. now if this phone was to come out in the US, and run android, the iphone would have some real competition. but now we’ll have to wait until LG, who has some incredibly sexy phones to get their android out in 09.
This is so stupid. The G1 is a damn joke! How the hell could HTC fuck up this badly? Damn! I was really hoping for the Touch HD too.
Screw picking a carrier, just throw all the 3G GSM spectrum, including AWS, & call it a day.
In a way “good” move on HTC’s part. HTC does not want to cause any disruption especially with the roll-out of the G1. The Touch HD, is that much of a high end device, that would have SOME interference with the G1 (under Tmobile) and Diamond and Pro (under Sprint) sales here in the US.
I think because of their heavy partnership with Google and Tmobile, they want the G1 to be successful; None of this speculation or expectation of the Touch HD coming to the US. Because any further or lingering news of that would sway some people away from it. At the same time they just released the Diamond and Pro under Sprint. And already those that were in the market for those phone, were willing to wait it out for the Touch HD.
I personally think the Touch HD (some way, shape, or form) will be coming some time next year to the US. They just have to save face for now, for the benefit of their highly invested partners.
Oh well.
Once again, USA is off the list for cool stuff. Why? PHONE SUBSIDIES, carrier locks, restrictions, crap/bloatware. Why any phone manufacturer would want to do business in the USA is beyond me. It amazes that we even have the few choices we do have!
Thank God the government doesnt get involved in the free market eh? ….. Oh Wait
Ugh. The U.S. gets the ugly duckling (and man is it ugly) again. The G1 is an unpolished turd, and Touch HD a gem. But hey, at least the GI has a totally unproven OS written by people who have never created one before and is on a network with horrible coverage. Proof positive that that slapping the word “Google” on anything makes it marketable. At least we’ll get the Touch Pro soon.
LOL @ Bunbury touting the WM interface.
sonofab**chmutherf**kingrustyc**tbucketf**k. This blows.
Is it just me or has HTC been really screwing the US lately? All of their devices, until recently, have been quadband world phones. Why change now? Retaliation for something?
Thank You for all the feedback.
lol… WM sucks anyway.
Alright, fine. But when can we expect the, IMHO, equally as awesome Sony XPERIA X1???
Is it coming to AT&T? If it doesn’t, when can we expect to buy it directly from an online retailer or in a store at full price???
What a load of crap. I am so sick of these idiot phone makers. Screw finding a carrier, Build the phone to work every where & they will sell. Were talking about adding 2 more 3G bands to it, The cost wouldn’t have been much more. It’s just plain dumb.
Agreed. I don’t get why they ignored the biggest market, the United States.
Crunch – the US is a big market, but it isn’t the only one. All the other markets a) add up to a far larger potential market and b) all use the same frequency. Only the US uses a wacky version.
I understand that…Add Canada to the, well, let’s call them “odd” frequencies. So the Canadian market is equally as affected, albeit that it is not nearly as big.
I’m glad we have the frequencies we do, however. Every time I go overseas, it’s a pain to get a 3G signal @ 2,100MHz. 1,900MHz is already poor for building penetration, but yet another 200MHz higher makes it impossible to get a decent signal INSIDE buildings. That’s why European carriers, for example, always advertise that their coverage maps for 3G are to be read as “outside” address x, y, and z. NEVER inside buildings.
There is the market question in terms of sales, where the US/CAN is nothing compared to the asian one, and even Europe, most people don’t have land lines.
You’re also missing one other point, the present global economic crunch. I want a Touch HD as much as the next guy, but HTC can’t spend all the money to reach a market that might be shaky… They are not there for us, they are there to make money.. and maybe skipping this phone, at this time is their economical wisdom.
I don’t know, still hope this is bad gen and that we’ll still see it appear.
One (speculative) reason HTC isn’t coming to the U.S.: AT&T has told them not to. After all, AT&T makes a tidy profit selling more iPhones than anyone else in the U.S. Why in the world would they want to share any of that cash cow with another device that’s obviously superior?
So AT&T tells HTC it wants a good WM phone, but nothing that will dethrone the iPhone as the most desirable thing out there. Thus, no Touch HD.
Another bunch of posturing and maneuvering by HTC to shaft what’s left of their customers, again.
