RIM CEO says AT&T still testing Blackberry Bold

It looks like RIM is saying, “Hey, don’t look at us! AT&T is still conducting testing!” Whomever we decide to point the finger toward is just beyond important anymore. The device was announced in May for a summer sale, and as of yet there are no official announcements from AT&T, the U.S. carrier for the Bold. It’s understandable that they would want to test the device for performance and avoid initial problems. Mike Lazaridis, RIM co-CEO, says, “There’s great scrutiny, as you might know, on that network and a certain device. So I guess everyone wants to be sure on every last test.” You guess? Again, this goes back to pointing the finger at AT&T and the iPhone because they weren’t prepared for the network congestion and the problems the iPhone would have. At this point, we don’t want to hear excuses anymore, we just want RIM and AT&T to get this thing out already! Besides, with the way Blackberry compresses data, just how much of a strain can it be to share with the “data-hogging” iPhone 3G? Didn’t RIM or AT&T already decide that they can have 20 Bolds for every iPhone on the network? Oh we get it! RIM has been shuffling all their engineers off the Bold and onto the Storm project…

Thanks Justin!

I got just one fact. Just one little fact that I found out by my little old self:

A fleet (7) Att tech vans were parked in my neighborhood the other day. I approached and talked with one of the techs. In short, (with some gentle prying) he told me that Att’s network has been in need of an upgrade for quite a while, and that the iPhone simply put the magnifying glass on the subject. Now Att is scrambling to fix things. He wasn’t sure about phone (Bold) delays, but felt no doubt that if a 3g phone were to be delayed at all at this point in the year, then it ‘could’ be due to the network issues.

Today driving home today I saw 1 Att van set up to access the cell tower on the back side of my neighborhood.

All those vans dong cell work….sounds like an upgrade in progress to me. A fast upgrade at that.

Ask yourself just one little non-biased question: would one phone’s highly publicized problems prompt a quick, but silent network upgrade, while simultaneously proving problematic to a second (as yet to be released) highly publicized phone? Or another question: would one phone’s highly publicized problems prompt a bunch of CEO’s to be vaguely mum? ……yes and yes.

Of course there are Bold OS issues. Anything with an OS now a days gets updated/upgraded on the fly.

So RIM launched in the summer as advertised. Att is launching “later this year” as advertised. One specific, one vague. Either way ….we wait.

@Anonymous loser: BGR is not the only site that’s been posting negative information about RIM lately. I have read many of the same stories on other blogs. Why don’t you do us a favor and spend some time researching other sites and spend some quality time away from here. You are just about the biggest bitchin’ little baby I’ve ever seen.

Just ask yourself one question. Is it really important whether the delay of the Bold is AT&T’s or RIM’s fault? Will laying the blame at either company’s feet get one in your pocket any faster? What the hell does it matter to you at the end of the day if BGR thinks it’s RIM’s fault. Are you so pathetic that it is going to disrupt your little world what their opinions are about RIM?

You’ve been told by several members of their staff that they like and use RIM products. If they didn’t like them, you think they don’t have enough phones laying around their shop that they couldn’t use something else?

Why don’t you do us and yourself a favor by bringing your ranting down a notch or two?

As a result of the delays, the phone is being renamed the Blackberry “Old.” Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I am not happy that they have pushed this phone back so much but I am willing to wait until AT&T and RIM get it right. I rather have a device late then have one early with so many bugs a new firmware update is needed every week for it to function. But in all fairness, I might have a little more patience since I currently have an iPhone 3G and a BlackBerry 8310.

Either way, I hope this issue with AT&T gets resolved asap so everyone can purchase their Bold.

    @EvilHomer

I don’t know if you noticed, but most “other” sites don’t get the scoops BGR does or are just too lazy to try. That’s why we keep coming back here!! The problem with that though is the other sites either post a link straight to BGR or give a summary of the negative remarks. That’s where blog sites go wrong. Everyone wants to be up to date with posts so they quote BGR or another site. Pretty soon the opinion of the original source is taken as fact.

ya’ll people need to relax a bit. it’s just a phone. Jesus. Up here in canada we’ve had it for two months now and ya, it rocks but it’s got 3G problems from what i can tell. But then so does my e71 and my girls iphone so maybe its the network. But seriously, you need to go get urselves some girlfriends and play with that. I know they’re not easier than a blackberry…i hear ya but…but to get into arguments and bashing people over opinions on a phone??? like, hello..lol 1. grow up and 2. go do something. Just remember that by the time the phone comes out in the good old crappy U.S. of A., u won’t even remember just what the f*ck u were bitchin’ about on this blog, know what im sayin.

I’m very irritated about the delay but after reading this, I’m a little happy that AT&T/RIM are taking their time to release a solid device. I really don’t want to deal with issues the iPhone 3G users dealt with on AT&T’s network. I’ve tested a few different phones on the 3G network in Boston and they’ve run rock solid for me. I’ll wait patiently to get this phone because I know I won’t buy anything else..

Unless, I try the Storm and I like it, than I will switch to Verizon.

Take it easy ya’ll… both phones are coming and they will be worth it.

    blah says:

Obviously pressure is on to bring this to market, but at the same time RIM could have alleviated the pressure by keeping better wraps on the product until it was done with testing.

To blame AT&T is not totally fair. AT&T has not announced a date for this product, and it ALWAYS puts devices through stringent testing cycles of about 12 weeks before announcing technical acceptance. Up until that time, a product that doesn’t meet expectations is sent back for defect repair, or even in some cases dropped.

Let AT&T and RIM do their work to get the product ready. Until then, enjoy your Curve/iPhone/whatever.

Went to the local AT&T store yesterday. The sales guy said that their staff received trainging on the Bold this week and that it would be available in his store in about 2 weeks. For what it’s worth, he seemed very confident about this timeframe.

@BGR staff and all posters. This is how I know BGR is first choice of phone blogs. I submitted a pic of the samsung milky demo phone to BGR which they posted. Yes those are my meats wrapped around the silly white phone. a week later we get the confirmation email from our warehouse director, who oversees orders for our company’s 200+ stores, saying we can now order this handset followed with this sentence: “Picture of A637 at bottom. Best I can get at the moment”… the pic? It was the one BGR posted from the pic i sent them. That to me shows how legitimate this site is on getting/posting relevant info before anyone else.

So yeah, keep up the good work BGR, bias or not you guys rock.

For what it’s worth I was at my local ATT owned store today & talked to the manager. He said that they do not have a firm release date at present and, most worrysome to him, they have not sent out display materials, accessories or anything else BB bold related yet. He advised me to wait & that it should be released soon but that he thinks that that means before Thanksgiving

Please, ATT is just holding off till the sales of the 2nd gen iPhone die down to just a few a week, (nationwide). Then they’ll let loose the iPhone slayer! But, I HAD to get a .net phone since mine developed ‘BRAIN DAMAGE’! And I could not wait til 2010 for ATT to release the Bold, so I pre-ordered a G1…. Hope I like the Android!!

Next time you want to call us the good old crappy USA, take off your jean jacket, jean shirt and jeans and shove a bold up your ass, then get your girlfriend to call you from her iphone. You would be flying a USSR flag if it were not for us. Give your self a hand, your country did do something in the last 100 years besides play hockey, o yea the Blackberry. The good old crappy US loves to laugh at your cloths, speach, maple leafs, and credit report commercials you film there. We will put a boot in your ass, yes I said boot, not “a boot”, that’s not a word shit bag.
