RIM CEO says AT&T still testing Blackberry Bold

It looks like RIM is saying, “Hey, don’t look at us! AT&T is still conducting testing!” Whomever we decide to point the finger toward is just beyond important anymore. The device was announced in May for a summer sale, and as of yet there are no official announcements from AT&T, the U.S. carrier for the Bold. It’s understandable that they would want to test the device for performance and avoid initial problems. Mike Lazaridis, RIM co-CEO, says, “There’s great scrutiny, as you might know, on that network and a certain device. So I guess everyone wants to be sure on every last test.” You guess? Again, this goes back to pointing the finger at AT&T and the iPhone because they weren’t prepared for the network congestion and the problems the iPhone would have. At this point, we don’t want to hear excuses anymore, we just want RIM and AT&T to get this thing out already! Besides, with the way Blackberry compresses data, just how much of a strain can it be to share with the “data-hogging” iPhone 3G? Didn’t RIM or AT&T already decide that they can have 20 Bolds for every iPhone on the network? Oh we get it! RIM has been shuffling all their engineers off the Bold and onto the Storm project…

Thanks Justin!

Well at&t has zero native coverage in Europe, of course, so any advantage disappears if you have a world phone on VZW or Sprint… (hell, if you have an especially cheap at&t phone that doesn’t have the bands for Europe, you’re not getting a signal despite GSM magic)

@Stop-N-Go: I get what you are saying but that fact that we were given a release date and either AT&T or RIM or both can’t get their shit together is frustrating. They should not have announced a summer release if it wasn’t at least 99% ready to run. No one wants a buggy device released but I think we all are in awe of the incompetence of AT&T/RIM in getting this to market.

Couple that with the fact that this shit is our hobby, pastime and passion. We are the 10% of the market that treats a new device like a kid before Christmas. We are also those who are currently unhappy with our current devices and ready to move on to better technology. Just so you know, this forum and others like it exists for the 10% that do care and if you don’t understand that then you are lurking in the wrong kind of website.

VZW has not native coverage in Europe and currently only ONE device that will work across the pond. I can use nearly every AT&T phone there unless it’s an old triband. I never said anything about native coverage but there is loads of coverage on loads of devices. Want mix Sprint in? Check out Sprints native coverage in the US. That network wouldn’t even exist without sucking on VZW’s tit.

RIM, that is RIM said the device would launch in the summer. And it did. The Technical Acceptance date for the Bold has always been Oct. 20th. But I understand the frustration. Atleast they’re trying to get it right and give us a half-assed device. :)

The Bold has been scheduled for launch Oct 23rd, with a official
launch party the 22nd. We have known for over a month that the Bold
was not going to be launched on the 2nd. Lastly, the issues with the
Bold have been 100% the fault of RIM. They have been extremely slow
to respond when repairing software issues that are critical to AT&T’s
    network performance.

    We’re almost there folks.

“Whomever we decide to point the finger toward is just beyond important anymore.”

Isn’t that convenient. Until today BGR was blaming RIM and bashing them heavily. Now that it looks like AT&T may be at fault it suddenly doesn’t become important why its delayed. I guess BGR could only cover AT&Ts backside for so long by deflecting peoples frustrations to RIM.

“Didn’t RIM or AT&T already decide that they can have 20 Bolds for every iPhone on the network? Oh we get it! RIM has been shuffling all their engineers off the Bold and onto the Storm project…”

If the writer doesn’t think its important to point fingers anymore then why did he use the last few sentences to point fingers at RIM?

What does AT&T deciding they can have 20 BBs for one iPhone have to do with RIM moving engineers to the Storm?

First, we don’t know RIM is moving engineers from Bold to Storm. Stop trying to create a subterfuge for AT&T by making things up about RIM. It seems BGR will stop at nothing to protect their AT&T overloads.

Second, even if RIM were moving engineers to Storm how exactly is that hurting AT&T? It clearly states AT&T is in testing. Not RIM is reworking things for AT&T.

RIM & AT&T have a good working relationship. One would think RIM wouldn’t release a statement pointing to AT&T, risking tarnishing their relationship with AT&T, if RIM were the reason for the delay. Several other blogs have contacted AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel about RIMs comments & they have no response.

It looks like BGR has been barking up the wrong tree for all this time blaming RIM for all the Bold release woes. And it appears BGR is still willing to point those fingers based off the last few sentences in this post. That may slide with your blog fanboys but the rest of us can see BGR will not stop making jabs at RIM even when BGR is claiming its not important anymore.

I think AT&T is gun shy after the problems with the iPhone on their network. AT&T went into hyper test mode because they know another problem like that and it could be a PR nightmare.

That said (written), I don;t blame AT&T for this. More importantly I don’t blame RIM for AT&T being gun shy about releasing popular new 3G devices.

So go ahead BGR, bash RIM some more based off no facts at all. Take the side of AT&T for no good reason. The hard line view will only go to temporarily increase your website hits while in the long term decrease readers trust for your unbiased phone reviews.

At this point, after all the bashing of RIM on BGR, who is going to believe a bad Blackberry review from BGR?

Funny, I could have sworn… let me double check… yup, practically the entire BGR staff uses Blackberry, half of whom use the Bold. RIM bashing? Didn’t BG just give out like, 5 Bolds last month?

That is a weak argument considering the daily bashing BGR gives RIM.

Just because you use a Blackberry doesn’t automatically mean you like RIM. It certainly doesn’t mean anything when post after post after post are all heavily slanted against everything RIM.

Bashing RIM for so long then saying ‘but we use RIM’ doesn’t mean you don’t have a bias against them.

I’m convinced BGR is turning into Paris Hilton… are you now frenemies with RIM? Talk trash all the time about RIM then tell us RIM is your buddy, you all use RIM so you must not hate them.

Updating everyone on Bold and Storm news when we can and as it happens would hardly be indicative of hating on RIM. And one wouldn’t think that if a team went out of their way to secure a Bold well before it is available in their country, that the team would hate RIM. Not to mention, once again, that BG would go out of his way and buy 5 Blackberry Bolds to give away to readers if there was any animosity towards RIM.

LMAO- you stupid fucks. BGR is the only website where you can be given the freedom to post this trash. I have never seen any website come close to BGR in terms of strictly content. Every single mother fucking posing website, including Engadget Mobile, has “BGR” watermarks on all of their “breaking news”.

Since this is his site, he has the right to be biased to whoever the fuck he wants. If you don’t like it, go post on Gizmodo or some other sorry ass site posting news that was already released here a week before.

BTW- I still love you all.

My response to that Marc is to go back and read the last 15 posts about RIM products on BGR. I am not the only one that sees the anti-RIM slant in the writing of posts.

Better yet, lets just look at this post of yours. You start on the right foot with it not being important who is at fault (BGR has been claiming its 100% RIM). Then you move on to summing up basically AT&T is delaying this thing according to RIM (you left off some of the good stuff from the CEOs quotes that make it sound even more of AT&Ts fault). You finish with unfounded jabs at RIM.

Where did your idea go about it no longer being important who is at fault? Why did you choose to take a poke at RIM at the end?

Do you have any kind of rumor that made you write RIM is shuffling their engineers away from Bold? Or was this just another jab at RIM in an attempt to make the problems of the post appear like its RIMs fault?

Hopefully you can see the tone in your posts that make numerous people comment on BGR about being anti-RIM.

Put your post together with Kellys posts and many others and BGR begins to show a pattern of blaming or hating on RIM. Many times with little to back it up. AT&T is just as much, if not more, at fault than RIM on this one and yet BGR only goes after RIM.

Marc, the only reason I spent time responding is I was disappointed. I enjoyed your posts about HTC, Motorola, Apple and Ballmer. Then I read this and I see these same unfounded BGR jabs at RIM while not giving equal time to bashing AT&T on this one.

Maybe its something in the water at BGR headquarters. Perhaps you guys should start importing Canadian water… that might soften your take on RIM & help you realize AT&T isn’t without blame for the Bold.

Oh yeah, you don’t care whose fault it is anymore… ever since it looks like its more AT&Ts fault.

@Anonymous loser Glad you enjoyed my other posts, but we’re not taking it easy on AT&T, either… hence my remark about them admitting they can handle 20 Bolds per iPhone, and now we’re hearing they’re still in testing. And nothing makes me more furious at the carrier I primarily use when I call almost every week (strictly for this site) playing “clueless consumer” in order to squeeze out info for the Bold… only to be hit with, “We’re sorry, we don’t know a thing about it.”
