RIM CEO says AT&T still testing Blackberry Bold

It looks like RIM is saying, “Hey, don’t look at us! AT&T is still conducting testing!” Whomever we decide to point the finger toward is just beyond important anymore. The device was announced in May for a summer sale, and as of yet there are no official announcements from AT&T, the U.S. carrier for the Bold. It’s understandable that they would want to test the device for performance and avoid initial problems. Mike Lazaridis, RIM co-CEO, says, “There’s great scrutiny, as you might know, on that network and a certain device. So I guess everyone wants to be sure on every last test.” You guess? Again, this goes back to pointing the finger at AT&T and the iPhone because they weren’t prepared for the network congestion and the problems the iPhone would have. At this point, we don’t want to hear excuses anymore, we just want RIM and AT&T to get this thing out already! Besides, with the way Blackberry compresses data, just how much of a strain can it be to share with the “data-hogging” iPhone 3G? Didn’t RIM or AT&T already decide that they can have 20 Bolds for every iPhone on the network? Oh we get it! RIM has been shuffling all their engineers off the Bold and onto the Storm project…

Thanks Justin!

we finally got to play with it on our network Tuesday and it works just as well as the latest updated iphones. I am not going to go as far as recommending it, but I will say it’s almost there…not the phone which is fine but the upgrades to the network.

-its already in their insurance program
-they have lots of people calling in w/ bold’s, if u turn off 3G it works, if u have service books sent, all appropriate att icons will show up
-att phones may not allow you to turn off 3G, rogers phones do….

this phone and ATT is a disaster from the start. Blackberrys are sooo lame and tacky. It reminds of the sidekick at its height in 2004. Grow up you posers.

Thanks BG! I’m glad we now know what’s going on. I’ll stick with T-Mobile and my Blackberry Curve 8320 till they get the issues fixed and the kinks worked out. I might even try out the Pearl Flip that’s coming out in two weeks on T-Mobile.

@chris Brain fart, perhaps? I was meaning to say that pointing fingers doesn’t matter anymore, whether it’s RIM or AT&T. I was furious when I wrote this piece and when I finished, I was tempted to call AT&T and give them a piece of my mind!

@NickyHilton I have an iPhone 3G and an old RAZR for AT&T. I also have a Blackberry Curve and Nokia 5610 for T-Mobile. Up until recently, I was also using a Samsung Fin and the Ocean for Helio. :) (Dropped Verizon recently where I had a Blackberry 8700)

But I am waiting for the Bold!!!!!

Oh yeah go ahead and release the Bold AT&T because a SMALL segment(less than 10% of future customers) are fucking impatient and want it NOW. The same ones who will be on this blog and every other Blackberry forum bitching about how it doesn’t work properly if they did. Shit, let them and RIM(who might finally made an OS that’s half ass stable enough) to get this figured out. Seriously, you all would rather this have a launch like the Iphone and have all kinds of problems, instead of AT&T taking their time and testing it, just so you can have it now?? WTF???

And don’t try and come at me with the well it’s been released everywhere else. Cause it doesn’t run properly on those networks either. Compare .125 & .162…. Tell me theres not a helluva difference… Then tell me .162 is the best they can do??? LMAO… Chill the fuck out and let them get it right. Or we’ll have to hear you all bitching about that too…

dissapointing, i’ve been waiting for the release of this phone for sometime now, i first saw it back in july when i was in turkey, my buddy had the previous model, and upgraded to the bold when it was released there, he has had it for 2 months now, and has no problems with it. Oh well, there isnt much the consumer can do about it, although im very angry, it wont stop me from purchasing this phone.

“I guess”… Yeah, like Lazaridis, a highly intelligent, experienced and motivated CEO, is going to be “guessing” publicly at anything.

Folks, this is what we call a polite FU. ATT is RIM’s customer, so Lazaridis can’t just slag on ATT. But he wants to make it clear that Bold has been available for sale in many other countries around the world and that this hold-up has nothing to do with RIM.

@Stop-N-Go Youll have to forgive us impatient folks who are slightly bothered by a May announcement slating the Bold for summer… and it’s now October and it’s “still in testing.”

Depending on where you live it works great. There are many places where VZW sucks. There are many places TMO sucks. Many places Sprint sucks. Your network experience varies from carrier to carrier by where you live. I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and the 3G is great.

Try VZW’s coverage in Europe where many of us GSM users travel. Your statement is old, tired and pointless. Everyone here is using either the network that works best for them and their area OR, like you, whatever family plan your mommy and daddy have you on….
