Nokia 5800 XpressMusic finally announced

There you have it - the Tube is no longer just another phone that we’re all waiting for indefinitely. It’s now a phone that we’re waiting for Nokia to outdo. The 5800 XpressMusic is the first in a series of handsets that will feature the latest version of Nokia’s Symbian operating system, S60 5th Edition aka “S60 Touch”. The 5800 is priced just under $400 US, with a slightly more expensive version bundled with Comes with Music due early next year. There are a few minor surprises about the device that came from the announcement event so here’s a spec run through:

  • Three versions: Quad-band GSM with 850/1900 WCDMA, Quad-band GSM with 900/2100 WCDMA and Quad-band GSM with no 3G
  • WiFi and GPS
  • 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 640 x 360 pixels, 16 million colors, tactile feedback
  • 1320 mAh battery (!)
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, 30 fps video capture
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0 (microUSB port)
  • Stereo speakers
  • Finger and stylus UI control
  • New media bar interface, always accessible via a touch-sensitive button above the display
  • Proximity sensor to save battery life and avoid inadvertent touches
  • 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, 109 g
  • Available in black, red and blue

The 5800 will be available sans-Comes with Music before the end of this year and we really couldn’t be happier to have this behind us. You hear us Nokia? It’s time to get to work on releasing that high-end touchscreen handset we know you’re hiding somewhere. How does 1H 2009 sound?

Wow, really thick if those specs are accurate. Plus, just saw a promo video, and the person navigating the screens seemed to have troubles. I hope the OS and hardware are more responsive come launch date!

i have a nokia n78 and i don’t get a time out error often at all. Maybe once every 2 weeks? I have it 2 months and encountered the error 5 times.

Yeah, that’s definitely an error more common to older phones/firmware. I haven’t seen it on any of my S60 handsets in quite a while.

Make sure if you’re using the phone on AT&T you delete the proxy address and port from your AP…

Will AT&T even get it? Its an obvious iPhone competitor and I’m sure their deal with Apple prevents them from offering a competing device.

    @lion.

I remember that phone. I was totally blown way. I am in fact disappointed by the design of this phone especially coming from nokia and after the e71 which is fantastically designed.

But who cares, it’s a touch S60…better be damn good.
It’s just a shame its a music phone cause i mean, who really cares.
What they should have done is thrown a 5mp camera in there and i love the 16:9 recording. No consumer phone or camera records in 16:9 with the exception of the new sony HD cybershot. I think its a sony. Might be a philips…whatever. cant wait to get my hands on one. :)

And…it’s small and light compared to the ifone and the storm, which i think is the biggest advantage of this phone. And my favorite attribute. :)
Any other small touch phones use Crappy Mobile 6.0…and..come on now. It ain’t 1997.

I know what Nokia thinks. This is the phone for emerging markets who cannot afford a $700 iPhone. This phone can do almost everything iPhone can do in terms of features. Most features are better, some are not.
Nokia’s manufacturing muscle is evident, when they pitch a feature rich phone at such low prices. This is something Apple can never achieve. Nokia is itching for a fight at their own terms, and they carefully avoid walking into Apple’s home turf. Apple cannot pick this fight without cutting margins. Interesting fight indeed.
