AT&T’s Samsung i907 is called Epix

Well, there goes BlackJack III… We just got a hot tip from one of our readers and it clearly shows what we all knew as the Samsung i780 dressed up in AT&T branding as the AT&T Epix. There’s also been some physical tweaks to make the device more polished. Specs? There’s the awesome optical joystick which doubles as the select button for the 5-way d-pad, Windows Mobile Professional 6.1, UMTS/HSDPA, and GPS. We weren’t briefed on the other specs, but you can be sure there’s a camera (with VideoShare likely) and Bluetooth. We were also told to look for it to launch around the same time-frame as the AT&T Fuze for probably around $199 after MIR. Samsung, you’re doing alright, but you’ve got to learn how make QWERTY keyboards, ok?

This is what I posted about in the blackberry bold thread a few days ago. It’s a sweet phone and will also come in red. The middle “eraser mouse” joystick performs very wel and the hardware is well suited for WM 6.1. :)

LOL big & ugly? It’s about the size of the current blackjack 2 which is a great size for a PDA. No where near as big & heavy as the Tilt. I think this is gonna be a great alternative for business users or those wanting a windows mobile professional phone w/out having to go w/ the Tilt and don’t want an iphone or blackberry.

Too big and very ugly. The blackjack line and this one seems awkwardly tall, they have too much wasted space around the screen and on the top and bottom. If they need that much space to fit everything in the case then adjust the screen or use more for the keys, just awful looking imo.

WTF? How is this an i9xx and not an i7xx? Is AT&T not getting a branded Omnia device with NA 3G? Strange, as VzW seems to be getting an i770 “BlackJack III” (WinMo 6.1 Pro, touchscreen, QWERTY, trackpad) in addition to an i910 “Omnia”. You’d figure AT&T would have both as well?

    Eric says:

Why would AT&T actually carry the “Omnia” which was produced to be a competitor of the iphone. Apple won’t let AT&T carry it.

BG, not trying to be a dick here but, is the phone code the i907 as it says in the title or is it the i780 as it says in the meat of the article ?

    @Joshua M

No worries. The i780 is the European model (tri-band GSM, 2100MHz WCDMA) the i907 is AT&T’s version of it, the Epix

In the “Arrivals” section of the new Laptop magazine (November 2008) they have that picture (Samsung Epix) with the following info:

    “2.6 touchscreen TFT display”
    “opticla mouse”
    “HSDPA and Wi-Fi”
    “microSD slot”
    “2-megapixel camera with video capabilities”
    “assisted GPS (AGPS)”

Yeah, Im not sure if thats just a feature they forgot to mention but no wifi access is a kick in the mouth compared to its brothers under other carriers. verizon has a slider one that has basically the same features as it and wifi… I have owned all versions of the blackjack that came out and i have to say they are tanks.. i abuse them and they hold up, this one on the other hand looks like it might not be the same, and they still havent improved on one of the BJ II’s downfalls. the poorly styled keyboard.

I just got an i907 yesterday from the local AT&T dealer. The WiFi was the selling point for me. And when I got home I was able to connect to my home WiFi, but I’ll be damned if I could get the IE browser to actually surf. Not sure if it was misreporting the connection to my WiFi router or the phone prefers to send bits over 3G. Other than that it seems a potent little unit. This is my first smartphone and am getting used to the difference over my 4 year old Nokia.

Our samsung rep gave us the tour… It is a blackjack II on steroids. Just think Blackjack II with touch, stylus, Wi-fi, the new version of windows mobile, and supports up to a 32gb memory card. It’s a solid phone. Should give the Bold a run for its money.

I just bought one the day before yesterday. I like it better than my Blackjack II that I just bought a few weeks ago.

We went back to buy hubby a new phone, but I got this Epix in my hand… and wouldn’t let it go!
So hubby got my old just-bought Blackjack II. lol

It has WIFI. Don’t know why the box is wrongly printed.

The only thing it hasn’t got, which I really could use, is an attachpoint for a neck lanyard. Small point of concern to most folks – but very important to someone who can’t walk! That’s important to me, in case I’m knocked out of my scooter or wheelchair by an accident or an inattentive driver. If my phone phone is out of my physical reach in an emergency – it’s of no value to me. The Blackjack II had a little attach point and I could wear it around my neck. I can’t get up and walk over to retrieve a phone knocked out of my hand or reach.

So what I want to know is this:

Have they separated the headphone jack from the power jack yet?

Combining them is one of the stupidest things ever. There are times when I want to listen to my music player while sitting at my desk – I can have it plugged in then, and not drain the battery if it were possible wiothout a third party adapter…

    DUMB.
