Verizon Wireless to get the iPhone?

“When hell freezes over” – that is when most people would assume Verizon Wireless will finally get its mits on the iPhone. Not so says an insider who, according to 9to5mac, claims that a deal is in the making with an announcement possibly coming as early as Macworld 2009. What about that whole exclusivity deal AT&T has with Apple? Well, 9to5mac points out that there are no public documents confirming the exclusivity length and with rumored dates ranging from 2 to 5 years we really don’t know how long AT&T exclusivity would last. After all, AT&T wouldn’t want us to know that their exclusivity is coming to an end soon, now would they? Irregardless, a Macworld announcement would set the exclusivity to 18 months and a WWDC would set it at 2 years which would be in line with some of the rumors floating around. With job postings for CDMA and EVDO engineers floating around Apple’s iPhone job board and Apple showing a willingness to bend their rules by unlocking the iPhone for the Hong Kong market, this rumor may not be so far-fetched after all.

This is the second time I have read Mike here using the term Craptacular. Mike did you ever think that maybe verizon and other cell companies for that matter try to use the same operating systems on their phonse so the average customer (who by the way is clueless when it comes to tecnology stuff) doesnt have to relearn all the functionalities of their phone every time they replace it, shich is getting closer and closer to annually on average. I get that you are this tech savy guy who always wants the latest and greatest, but as a Tech guy im sure you inderstand that the physical size of cell phones coupled with the requirements to provide specific services place major hurdles in place. I would also assume that in all those Tech degrees there wasnt much time for marketing classes or demographic studies. The 80 million customers now currently with Verizon for example dont all use pda devicesand the relatively small percentage of PDA users dont all use Blackberrys. The remaining majority of customers that dont use PDA Devices do liek to use some of thos craptastic features you keep labeling that way. You want to know how I know this? Because they are still offered as options or features. If the people did not want them then they wouldnt use them and verizon wouldnt go to the expense of offering them any more. And by the way AT&T your golden boy company offers Mobile Web applications for their phones also, and yes they charge for that “Craptastic” service also.

Apple has built an impressive platform that is more than a platform, it is a vibrant ecosystem that people love.

I would say there is a 95% certainty to this, deals like these are very complex to work out. Jobs and McAdam are aggressive in their respective domains. Their diplomatic envoys will no doubt surface many revisions before all interests are reasonably satisfied.

To show an example, in 2004, Dell’s official line was AMD-based systems (e.g., desktops, laptops and servers) would never be built. I had actionable intelligence suggesting otherwise and history bears this out.

Next, following Apple S.O.P., a hungry customer clamors more. Wait until this is released, then scoop up an ATT 3G at a slightly lower price. Refurbished is also $50 off, many of them are user error returns in great condition.

For now, the blackberry 8330 curve 2 for 1 offer is my ticket in the meantime.

Apples has a great platform, however it takes time to work out the details. Jobs’ and McAdam’s envoys would need to work overtime to discover an acceptable deal. It is very complicated behind-the-scenes to negotiate, deliver and support such a product.

Amber. I would except when either LTE get’s off the ground for Verizon open’s up finally to any device that’s with-in the requirements for the existing c.d.m.a. network will probably be it. This is supposed to be happening soon. Of course the i-phone would have to be equipped.

My Verizon contract is up in August ‘09 and I really don’t want to move to AT&T to get an iPhone. I DO want an iPhone, however, and if AT&T is the only place to get an iPhone, then I guess I will have to make the move. I may get one of those prepaid TracPhones in the meantime so I can have cell service and a new phone without signing a new contract. I had recently heard that the iPhone may soon be sold at a much higher cost, but without the need for a contract. I think the guesstimated cost was somewhere around $600.00 or so.

Verizon has quite a few phones that aren’t locked down and have no Verizon OS… Win Mo, Blackberry, Palm. Just like every other network these companies use there own OS, these phones are Smart phones, The I phone is a Semi Smart Phone so the rules would be the same (high data plans and more freedom.

I agree with this sentiment entirely. I have a Palm Treo 700WX and would love an iPhone, but not enough to leave Verizon. The only reason I would leave Verizon is for the iPhone, but I haven’t and I won’t

yes there are many unlocked iphones, but only work on gsm and umts networks, not TDMA like verizon. They need sim cards to work. Verizon does not have sim cards, so those unlockd phones will not work.
