Verizon Wireless to get the iPhone?

“When hell freezes over” – that is when most people would assume Verizon Wireless will finally get its mits on the iPhone. Not so says an insider who, according to 9to5mac, claims that a deal is in the making with an announcement possibly coming as early as Macworld 2009. What about that whole exclusivity deal AT&T has with Apple? Well, 9to5mac points out that there are no public documents confirming the exclusivity length and with rumored dates ranging from 2 to 5 years we really don’t know how long AT&T exclusivity would last. After all, AT&T wouldn’t want us to know that their exclusivity is coming to an end soon, now would they? Irregardless, a Macworld announcement would set the exclusivity to 18 months and a WWDC would set it at 2 years which would be in line with some of the rumors floating around. With job postings for CDMA and EVDO engineers floating around Apple’s iPhone job board and Apple showing a willingness to bend their rules by unlocking the iPhone for the Hong Kong market, this rumor may not be so far-fetched after all.

    Myron mccray says:

usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

If this happens and Verizon doesn’t cripple any available features, I’ll switch back. I left Verizon because of all the crap they pull on handsets in general but the one thing I did like was “the network”.

I completely agree Codey. It’s all too expensive.

However, we’re constantly bombarded with this myth about Verizon’s data vs. everyone else. The reality is, data is expensive with both of the carriers that matter, and the other two are starting to catch up.

God I hope that this is legit! I am somewhat excited at the Storm and HTC Touch Pro but I really want the iPhone. I just do not want to go to AT&T! Hopefully Verizon does not dumb it up!

“Irregardless is primarily found in North America, most notably in Boston and surrounding areas”

this is not “edited prose” and I am a swamp yankee so y’all just get over it.

FYI…a 64gb ssd runs around 900 dollars. Until the price comes down, there will be no 64gb iphone.

It would be wise for apple to find a way to get the phone on other carriers as soon as possiblee, with the failing us economy apple stockk is free falling and has been recently downgraded. Think about how many iphones would be sold if more carriers carried it, that is y i think apple needs to have the phone sold on other carriers and will get it done sooner than later.

If this happens it will be good for Verizon. I like the iPhone but I will still get the Storm next month because I love Blackberry email & the Verizon network.

If the iPhone shows up on Verizon with LTE 4G next year I will consider it.

Is it bad to consider it divine intervention that my NE2 is available in July? Ha! Keeping me from getting the BB Storm, and now for good reason.

As long as GPS and WiFi work then I will switch back to VZW. I do miss the service I got with them and besies it works on the Metro in the D.C. Metro area.

“If they stay with EVDO 3G that Verizon has now, then you lose the capability of receiving phone calls while using the data features, which in my opinion would be a major step backwards from ATT 3G.”

Uh… No. My Moto Q9m on Verizon proves very soundly that EVDO does not mean either data or voice simultaneously. Phone calls will definitely still come in.

yeah that would be the point for apple they could do that watch there stock bounce back, in a yr or 2 come out with a new better type iphone link it to a carrier again and watch itself create another genius product that their is high demand for.

    Verizon Guy says:

IF this were to EVER happen next year (and that’s a HUGE IF!!!) it would likely be sold as a non-branded device directly through Apple, and would not be sold in Verizon Wireless stores. It would not be subsidized, and would likely require a higher-cost voice & data plan (activated through Apple) than what’s available on Verizon-branded handsets.

That said, I seriously doubt this would happen.

Irregardless? That’s not even a real word. You’re affixing the negative prefix ‘ir-’ to ‘regardless’, but, as ‘regardless’ is already negative, it’s a logical absurdity.

I hope this is real. I thought that iPhone being on one carrier kind of hoses others who don’t want to leave their current carrier. What I would like to see is @ least 32gb of ram. Then I would also like to see wifi. I know my 8830 has blackberry maps, and I can use Google Mobile Maps so GPS is still enabled on my device, I just don’t pay for VZNav.

I will probably get the Storm when it comes out and get my wife the VZW iPhone. Then try to figure out how to keep our calendars in sync.

All of you, STFU about “irregardless.” If you are correcting the poster about the use of “irregardless,” you have no sense of humor, and you are a pretentious douchebag. You’re like people who correct split infinitives (even though they are not improper, just frowned upon), overpronounce the “H” in “white,” and make a big deal about the “T” in “often.” Get a life.

    Chris says:

Verizon would not be dumb enough to cripple the interface of this phone. They also would not lock down features if they wanted to remain in competition with Apple. My BlackBerry Curve functions just as well as every other Curve on the market with the exception of locked down GPS except through VZW navigator. It is however a great service that gives you turn by turn GPS directions and that would make the iPhone a more complete device. Verizon didn’t lock down my curve (except GPS) or dumb it down and replace the well thought out interface and left every single feature available because of its potential use in the Enterprise market. If verizon wants to still compete they just can’t lock it down and they know that.
