BeeJive is a great IM app. It uses data instead messages from ur messaging plan. If u can’t do $16 then rock with a competitor.

BG love the site, was wondering if u can talk 2 them about making an app 4 the G1/Android Marketplace.

    Thanx.

Honestly the only reason I won’t download this (for now) is that, through no fault of BeeJive’s, you still can’t get background notifications on the iPhone. It makes IM totally useless on there. I’ve use Palringo and the AIM app and yeah I notice the limitations, but the biggest limitation of all is that when you close that app for all intents and purposes you’re offline. It’s garbage.

@J You can set it so it emails you a notification to you’re push enabled email address so to get a work around for the lack of apple supported notifications. In the email it sends it includes a button that will launch beejive and bring up the message. Its a slick workaround.

Palringo, when it first came out, was a complete was of time. Constant crashes, frequent connection problems, etc.

Palringo after the recent updates is fantastic. It stays logged in even after exiting, zero crashes, no more connection issues. Also has support for sending voice notes over IM, and sending full resolution pics.

    And it’s free.

What in it’s feature set makes bee jive worth $15?

I’ve used Beejive for the Blackberry and am now using it on the iPhone. So far so good. It works absolutely as advertised. I’m using MobileMe to receive offline notifications. The ability to stay online even without my IM client in the foreground was absolutely essential for me, hence the reason I paid the $16.

That said, Palringo is absolutely amazing. I understand that the first versions were extremely buggy and prone to crashing. The latest release has rectified these problems, I can’t get it to crash.

The ability to send voice messages or photographs or set up your own chatrooms in Palringo is really revolutionary for a mobile client. I got a kick out of sending voice messages back and forth to a guy driving in his car in Australia while I live in Salem, Massachusetts. Very well implemented.

Only concerns with Palringo; it goes through battery power like there is no tomorrow, it really can’t keep you online in the background, at least not reliably, and there is no offline notification. I’m sure they are working on these issues.

It will be interesting to see what these two companies are going to come up with in the future. My money is on Palringo to beat out Beejive in features in the long run.

I dunno why so many people are complaining about the price. I didn’t even blink at the $15.99 price. And I’m not anywhere near rich. It’s just about getting what you paid for and let me tell you this app is definitely the best app in the store easily… Come on guys, you act like BG would ever steer you the wrong way.

Thanks BG for posting this. I bought it once I saw your post. Keep up the good work! Peace.

You still get disconnected when you press the Home button. im constantly logged onto Beejive on my BlackBerry the whole day and dont get disconnected. Apple need to sort that out, a 620MHz processer that cant process multiple applications, thats lame

Well I paid for it and it was well worth it. I have used BeeJive/JiveTalk on my old Blackberry and now I love it on my iPhone, especially that they have implemented a pretty slick work around to the whole background notifications issue. But the one feature that has blown my mind is the fact that I can use the keyboard in landscape to chat… something that I thought Apple was blocking, since other developers seemed to leave it out. This combined with the push email notifications is well worth the $$.

I have used Palringo and honestly they have a great app too (I love the push to talk feature), but at the moment, BeeJive is winning this round.

You get what you pay for. People are quick to pay $10 for a game they probably don’t play half as much as they thought they would, I use IM occasionally, and probably could have saved the $$ but when I do use it, I want it to work. The developer has to have a reason to continue to make a great app, I don’t think the price is outrageous. I mean when you look at this, we have a $300 phone, a $30 data plan (without text messaging)… no insurance, so another $15 is nothing, unless you’re living beyond your means. (And I am no where near rich)

I want this IM client but I’m still holding off until push notifications are official w/ the iPhone. While being notified via email is cool, it would’ve have been cool to have an SMS option. If it had that option I wouldn’t blink at the $15.99 price.

THANK YOU. People who are knocking the price of a $16 app seriously need to shut up. BeeJive cost $20+ on the blackberry, and people pay for that without hesitation. This app will be above and beyond better than all IM apps on the iphone. if you want to use a sub-par app, then use the free ones…if you want to use a quality app, that is constantly updated, and is RELIABLE, then dole out the $16 and support a quality developer.

I downloaded it last night. I gotta say this is the best IM app on the Iphone by far. Works like a charm, keeps you logged in, sends you a email notification when you receive a new IM(they should change this to text but no biggie). I think it’s worth the $16 everyone’s bitchin’ about, but if IM isnt important to you I can see how it may seem a little pricey. I think we have been spoiled with all the free apps. Great job Beejive.

Some of you idiots should have never bought an iPhone or any other smartphone for that matter if you were going to bitch about the price of EVERY g-damn application launched that isn’t free. All I hear is too much, too much… You must not be used to paying more than .99 for Java games on your dumb phone.

Contrary to what some officials in Washington might want to change, this country is still a free market system. A person has the right to charge for an application whatever he wants and you have the right to no buy it. There are free and lower cost options for this service. However, you usually get what you pay for. Not too many people/organizations are going to write quality software for free.

I’m sure that most of you have never written a piece of software or done much more than flip a burger; so what gives you the right to dictate how much a software developer charges for their product? You have no idea the man hours that go into something like this and those costs must be considered in the pricing of a product.

Your iPhone will continue to work just fine with out any applications so feel free not to buy any. Just stop bitching about what you can’t afford. OR your could try writing your OWN chat program and see how far that gets you. If you do spend weeks or months writing one, and it works better than anything else out there, be sure to submit it to Apple then let us all have it for FREE.

15.99 isn’t bad for something you’re going to use – yea might be a bit steep but never the less.. people are willing to pay for good services. I just installed it, and it looks great and works really well…. I definitely recommend. It’s not about being cheap or not.. if you rather stick to whatever your using that’s “alright” – go for it! If you want something that works well… you gotta pay for that

Just a note. T-mobile customers in the US with unlocked iphones with the t-zones hack will need to change settings. Change the Internet apn to epc.tmobile.com. This will also speed up the Internet.

you CAN have an sms option WITH the email forwarding!!! lols Just figure out what your carriers email for you sms phone number is. for instance t-mobile users just put there phone number @tmomail.net, like this: 2225556666@tmomail.net (with the 2’s being your area code obviously) and then you will get an sms everytime your email gets forwarded. it works! i tried it!! all the major carriers have systems like that…

also, thank you sam SO much for the “epc.tmobile.com” i didn’t know anything about the apn changing, but that was THE thing that allowed me to FINALLY get Beejive working on with t-zones!!!! i had tried everything and basically given up. thanks SO much for sharing.

I emailed Jivetalk about if keys could be transferred between the BB and the iphone. While they said it could not be done they did offer to refund part of my purchase price via paypal if I could supply my itunes receipt after purchasing. Quoted something to do with licensing fees with Apple that prevented them from refunding entire app store price. If interested in doing so I suggest you go to Jivetalk’s website and email them about this for your specific situation.
