October 2nd Looking Promising for Nokia 5800 Tube Announcement

Earlier this week we told you about a Nokia event being held on October 2nd in London. The rumor, in case you somehow missed it, is that Nokia will be using the event to officially unveil the 5800 XpressMusic handset and prep the UK for the impending Comes With Music launch. We’ve also seen what looks to be an official 5800 XpressMusic press photo leaked shortly thereafter. Well Reuters has just jumped on the bus, stating that two of its industry sources have confirmed a Media and Analyst event next Thursday where Nokia will unveil the long-awaited “Tube”. We also have a source of our own who tells us that the October 2nd event will indeed be focused on unveiling the 5800 and Comes With Music, with Liz Schimmel (Head of Global Music), Tero Ojanpera (Head of Communities) and Kai Ostamo (Head of Devices) all in attendance from Nokia. Honestly, at this point we just want to put the Tube behind us. We’ve been waiting for it for well over a year, during which we’ve seen leaks, specs, UI shots, handset shots, etc. Several delays have been all but confirmed and every time Nokia fans think they’re getting close… Nothing. We know, for example, that Nokia already spent a healthy amount of dough to place the handset in a few Dark Knight scenes which was theoretically intended to coincide with an official announcement. Nope, nada. We also know that we’re currently well outside the time line we were given by Nokia back at the Symbian Smartphone Show back in 2007. Still, we wait; and all this for an entry level touchscreen with an all-too-familiar OS.

I thought the Tube mockup video was released a week before Fall CTIA 2007. That would put it around Oct 23 2007? Anyway. I just want the E75 at this point, but I guess it’ll be 6 months before the price drop.

I hope this is finally it. Nokia seems to be really limping behind other handset makers. Zach you where right about Nokia being lazy and comfortable at the top. They’ll have to bring out some top notch high end devices with touch to compete with HTC and Apple, because the Tube hardly rivals any of them…
