AT&T to potential BlackBerry Storm customers: Storm sucks, iPhone rulez!

You definitely have to take this one at face value, but there’s an internal document floating around inside AT&T pitting the iPhone 3G against the upcoming BlackBerry Storm. We had our doubts about this document at first, but we received it from two independent sources now, so it’s legit! Here’s some of the smack-talking AT&T lays down:

  • The Storm doesn’t have multi-touch
  • There’s no Wi-Fi
  • The Storm doesn’t have an App Store
  • Stormy Storm doesn’t have tri-band HSDPA
  • The browser sucks on the Storm
  • No iTunes action (movies, music, etc.)

Yeah yeah, we know you can sync your BlackBerry with DRM-free music in iTunes so don’t get your panties in a bunch over that line. We think legitimate points so far, but the browser hasn’t been tested and tri-band HSDPA doesn’t matter if you’re not using the device on AT&T in the United States. Peanut gallery, you’re up!

Thanks, AT&T ninjas!

Been using a BB for years–tried an Iphone, returned it in a week. The email client is just crap when you’re used to the solid email functions of a Blackberry. Also, how can any smart phone not cut & paste? I can live with more limited music resources–I need this thing to WORK. But I’m told converting music to a different format lets me download it to my BB–just haven’t had time to make that a reality. Guess it’s all in the priorities.

Would love a BB with a camera-especially a good one. Would love a touch screen–liked that in the Phone. Would love all this with a decent BB email client. Now, if we could just get it somewhere besides Verizon which has crappy service in my area. So I will stick with my 8800 for a while longer I guess…..

    Sprint? Att? Ever? Anyone?

People make such a big deal over the physical keyboard. I find that the iPhone keyboard really grows on you over time. I am beginning to think that I would never want a physical keyboard. The iphone keyboard is incredibly fast. All it takes is a slight flick of the very tip of your finger to hit a key. It took me about two weeks to get over being frustrated with it, but partly because I am not a two finger typist so that alone took some time to get used to. Secondly, I watched a lot of video of the Storm and it seems clear that having to press down makes all functions slower, and I thought much of the interface lacked polish. From the competition so far I think anyone would be an idiot to get anything but an iPhone. The thing has changed my life. I just downloaded, Greenspot, a california surf report application, Starmap is amazing if you spend much time hiking and camping, plus pedometers, GPS tracking, GPS based movie listings, web radio, it amazing how many incredible apps there are which can customize your lifestyle. I read these people saying, “Geee, I want a Blackberry because it is great for e-mail”

Whatever you do, DON’T confuse the STORM with the STORM on Verizon, the STORM has all these features, but as usual, Verizon locks them down. What a waste!

the only thing i’m sorry about for about iPhone is that i has a contract only with at&t. I truly don’t like that service, so when (if) they’ll ever sign with verizon, i don’t think i’ll have any second thoughts about what phone to choose.

i have an iphone 3g. and i love it, down to the glass multi touch screen, app store, amazing media functionality, and an AWSOME TWO THUMBS UP safari. but when it comes down to two advanced devises like this, you cant choose the “winner”. Both phones have features, specs, etc that the other doesn’t. Each are better in there own separate categories. What really matters is what each individual person enjoys more in a phone. Honestly, the iphone 3g and the Bb storm “kill” each other in different categories and qualities. As a result, choose what YOU WANT, and love life because you can not tell what someone else likes and wants in a phone. period

ok people the blackberry storm unlike the iphone 3G supports multimedia messages. this is a huge concern, i had the iPhone 3G and i hated the fact that there was no MMS but the blackberry does so i switched devices. and there are many third party applications for the blackberry as well so overall i think the storm can out do the 3G but the iphone is very trendy its not the best phone in the world ppl have to realize that

What if the person who wants the storm doesn’t really care or need to use all the crap att just said was bad about the phone? Does that mean it’s still a horrible choice?

I am an AT&T user and my kids both have iPhone 3Gs but they have had so many problems. They are better since the 2.1 update but still not stable and basic features missing. No MMS support. Come on what were they thinking. Sure you can email a pic to someone but I use MMS for more than pics and the recipient has to have a data package to get email. Not everyone I send to has a data package they have basic phones and basic plans but have MMS. The BB has MMS and a nice camera. It is also supposed to be better at multi-tasking. Surfing the web and talking on the phone at the same time. I don’t think the iPhone allows this. The iPhone WiFi is great for the kids to hook to the home wireless to download things. That is something the Storm and Verizon do not offer. Pros and cons. I am hoping that Apple releases an update or application that will support MMS. That is the real hang point for me. Otherwise I will either keep what I have or consider switching to Verizon. It will be interesting to see how the BB storm truly fairs.

If you are looking for a flash supporting browser on your smartphone device there is a simple little download called skyfire. It is still in beta phases but it will soon be out. It supports flash and is what most people misleadingly call “real internet”

Well it doesnt matter how much better the Iphone is - my company won’t support it. So I’m now stuck with the Bold - which is just jazzed up version of the phone I already have. I’m sure many are in the same boat. So my message to ATT - I ain’t buying a new phone from you this year.

At&t is definetly worried if they have to put this out. Blackberry has a proven track record of being reliable that is why like 95% of companies use it over the iphone. I had and iphone for a year and got sick of all the little problems and now I have a curve.

You all need to quit bickering about who is better between AT&T and Verizon because honestly. AT&T has iPhone and yes it’s nice but Verizon has Storm which is a step above Iphone some what. But what about the Blackberry bold? It doesn’t have the full screen that the storm or iphone have but you can type faster on it and it has pretty much the same apps as iphone and the storm. Why does it even matter? Who cares? They are phones. Why are you all bickering over phones? Who cares? I can call you from a brick phone and still hear what you are saying. Shut up! Quit crying about which one is better. They are phones! Who cares!?

There are many advantages and disadvantages to both phones. As far as I’m concerned Blackberry took the right steps to becoming one of the best phones for business and for consumer. Blackberry took simple and perfected it. Then they add a new feature and perfect that….and so on and so on. It might be a little behind in some aspects but it’s way ahead in others. I wanted an iPhone for a long time until I crossed blackberry Storm. I have a curve because I couldn’t afford the iphone. Amazingly enough the blackberry is a lot cheaper too.

Really/ You are really gonna go there? I seem to remember over on the blackberry forums how everyone was attacking the Iphone as soon as it was public knowledge that it was coming out, I mean if you go to the BB forums right now they are still posting that same tires ass post … Is (insert new Bb name here) the new Iphone killer well we all know that answer and it is NO, BB doesnt make an Iphone killer when they come out with something new and improved, ask yourself, do you really think the Iphone of today will be the same one used next year, no it will always be improved upon just like everything else, my 2 cents…

well of course it will be improved and hopefully it will excell and apple can get rid of all of the glitches and problems and upgrade simple things like MMS and the video camera and the camera itself. my room mate has an iPhone and I think it’s awesome. I’ve researched a lot into both phones and yes the iPhone is better as far as lasting because you can update it. It’s an iTouch that you can use as a phone as well. Brilliant idea but from everything I’ve read and I’ve tried hard to look at it from both sides and I talked to my room mate about the pros and cons and the Blackberry just seems like a way better investment and will do more for me and what I want in a phone. I’m just an electrician, I don’t need a business phone but it has more to it. So what if the internet is a little slower. My life wont change if i have to wait a few more seconds for a page. What about the fact that you can only download so much w/o being on WiFi with the iPhone. The blackberry will not kill the iPhone. Both are amazing phones. Blackberry is just better in my opinion. I try and look at the future of a product and I believe blackberry will pass iPhone one day. I could be wrong. Just my opinion. I’m not saying one is necessarily better right now because they both lack in certain areas. This is a conversation that will go on forever and no one side will convince the other side. Both phones will do better and better with each new version.

It seems that none of you posting here are a corporate email administrator. All you tout is all the whiz bang features that you want to use and how great finding the cheapest gas in your neighborhood is. All that doesn’t mean crap in the corporate environment (however my BB 8310 does have google maps and can pinpoint my location via GPS). I am a blackberry enterprise server administrator and manage the devices for our corporation. What many of you posters have never experienced is using a Blackberry with the Blackberry Enterprise Server. Many of you out there using a Blackberry only know it using the Blackberry Internet Service which is only provides a POP3 or IMAP interface. Most of you using these iPhones as your toy have no clue about or desire to provide a supportable, reliable and SECURE email environment. POP3 or IMAP is NOT secure and that is all you get with iPhone short of an HTML interface which is definately not secure. When you are supporting a group of people who depend on a portable device, you can’t go for the latest and greatest whiz bang toy. I don’t feel there is much of an advantage to having a Blackberry if you are only using the Blackberry Internet Service or in other words, you are a personal user. Go out and get an iPhone or Treo then. The only thing which synchronizes with POP3 or IMAP is email. You don’t get contacts, calendar appts, to do lists or personal journal wirelessly UNLESS you want to plug it into your computer but that defeats the whole purpose of having a personal wireless device. With the Blackberry Enterprise Server you NEVER have to plug your device into your computer to sync and you get email, contacts, to dos, calendaring and complete synchronization in every way PLUS extremely secure email transmission.

What happens if you break or lose your iPHONE? Can you recover all of your contacts, appts, memos, to do list??? NO…at least not without having had it plugged into your computer and first done a backup then do a restore. Or possibly you’ve downloaded some application from the app store that provides backup. The key is you have to initiate something to make this happen. Most don’t.

If one of my Blackberry Enterprise Server devices is lost, stolen or broken, I can have the user, whereever they are, go to any phone store and get a new device. Within 5 minutes I will have this new device exactly like the other device and this is all done wirelessly with no loss of information. And in the event it was stolen, I can wirelessly deactivate it without calling any service provider thus making is useless to the theif and protecting your very valuable content.

So you should think twice about the purpose of the device you are buying. If you are a business of any size, get the Blackberry Enterprise Server and get everyone a Blackberry be it the 8310, Storm or Bold. Business continuity is important especially while traveling. So is security.

On the other hand, if you just want a toy to play games on, make a few phone calls, IM your friends and do a little surfing and you don’t care about wireless synchronization, calendaring, to do list, security or reliablility, (and I’ve also seen it in person where the whole IPhone had to be reloaded from scratch losing all data) then get the iphone. No one can deny that it isn’t a great device but it isn’t corporate ready and truly doesn’t integrate any better with corporate email systems than the outlook client on your laptop. I’m not even going to go there because I’m sure many of you do that but really, there is a better way.

I can’t wait until the Storm is available on AT&T. It will be eventually. It’s impossible to say one device is better than the other because they are each geared for a different segments with different purposes which are starting to curve toward the same target but some will never have a business need and therefore will never need the same thing.

Lol. No multi touch? The touch interface is actually much more intuitive and user friendly on the storm. How about actually trying one out before sucking off Apple and eating up all the propaganda they shit out when new competition presents itself. Email is excellent on the storm and the browser is very easy to use. Not to say that either of those are bad on the iphone. The iphone is a toy. Really it is a shame that the storm doesn’t have an app store to buy silly useless applications to take up your memory. Seriously next time before you go posting a ridiculous blog based completely on speculation and the opinions of the competing company, try actually using the products and base your opinion off that. Relaying Apple’s selfish conceited marketing garbage isn’t helping anyone.

I was a bit hesitant last night approaching the Storm launch. I kept telling people “Blackberry users want a physical keyboard” I’m happy to say this Storm will only help me make more money.. I work at the top AT&T store in Minnesota and I was busy all day setting up Bolds and Iphone 3g’s all day. The corporate Verizon store 50 yards down the street only recieved 20 models..? WTF man.. and the stories about only selling the device to New Activations? What a sure fire bullshit way to piss existing customers off… I swung by the VZW store on my way into work today to see this device.. The VZW rep asked me if i was ready for my NE2 and I said “no” knowing that meant existing customer, therefore I was a potential new line.. He said that they had 2 left in stock.. The business guy next to me came rushing in and was told they were sold out. He was an existing customer. Damn, I understand the sales perspective, but damn. It only took me no more than 5 minutes to realize this phone is a terrible joke. The software is waaay laggy. You can’t just push a button.. The icon you press must also be “highlighted” first.. Very slow texting , emailing… No Wifi.. And to the person who said who needs wifi when the VZW network is sooo solid..You are f’n retarded.. I’ll take hi speed wifi over any cellular coverage anyday.. AT&T’s 3g isn’t perfect and not as good, I understand that.. but damn you gotta love the product line up for Xmas ‘08. Gotta love the Apple.. IT JUST WORKS… Apple+AT&T exclusivity untill 2012 peoples.. switch now.. The Bold is solidly built>> P.S. Thanks RIM/AT&T they gave the top 5 performing reps in each corporate store FREE Bold’s.
