AT&T to potential BlackBerry Storm customers: Storm sucks, iPhone rulez!

You definitely have to take this one at face value, but there’s an internal document floating around inside AT&T pitting the iPhone 3G against the upcoming BlackBerry Storm. We had our doubts about this document at first, but we received it from two independent sources now, so it’s legit! Here’s some of the smack-talking AT&T lays down:

  • The Storm doesn’t have multi-touch
  • There’s no Wi-Fi
  • The Storm doesn’t have an App Store
  • Stormy Storm doesn’t have tri-band HSDPA
  • The browser sucks on the Storm
  • No iTunes action (movies, music, etc.)

Yeah yeah, we know you can sync your BlackBerry with DRM-free music in iTunes so don’t get your panties in a bunch over that line. We think legitimate points so far, but the browser hasn’t been tested and tri-band HSDPA doesn’t matter if you’re not using the device on AT&T in the United States. Peanut gallery, you’re up!

Thanks, AT&T ninjas!

Ha, sounds like something gAyT&T would do. Very low. Desperate to sell a few more units of the HUGELY disappointing iphone 3G(overrated)…iphone is such a joke. Tries to be blackberry. Sadly, email(and a bunch of other stuff) on the iphone sucks donkey dink. Not to mention Apple is the American version of HTC-Sh*tty, sub par quality on every product they release. One thing I find particularly funny about the memo is gAyT&T says safari is “the best browser for mobile devices”. Uhhh, according to who? Safari and iphones are both for polesmokers and overpaid untalented morons like Ryan Phillipe and all those Hollywood no talents. Iphone is an overpriced Sidekick. gAyT&t is very much like John McCain; Old, Ugly and full of lies. Hope they both die a slow and horrible death. Att smokes pole. Iphone is for sperm swallowers. Blackberry Storm 4 Life.

@Dingoberry, Dude are you serious? No 3G connection and not even the upcoming 4G networks will ever be faster than WiFi i think, you also said App store bricking your phone? that’s a laugh, when was the first thing that happen, Also do you really believed Verizon EVDO is even close to AT&T 3G speeds? lol, i do admit though when the iPhone came out i could not even use 3G, that’s how slow it was, but now with the 2.1 firmware, this thing can’t be match for speed

    Wow,

What lies! I guess lying is a good way to persuade people.

LMAO@ Storm doesn’t have mulitouch, when it actually does.

LMAO@ gps….? Does the Iphone actually have voice activated turn by turn gps and blackberry maps, and standalone gps like the Storm? Or do they just have basic google maps with gps? LMAO

LMAO at the fact that they forgot to mention that the Storm actually does integrate with Itunes, as does current blakcberries.

LMAO at the fact that they forgot to mention that blackberry does do html email, can view and edit word, excel documents, and has much better Microsoft exchange ascess.

LMAO at the fact that they forgot to mention that the Storm truly is a world phone with both EVDO Rev A, and HSDPA 7.2, and has stereo bluetooth, mms, cut n paste, removable/upgradeable memory, oh yeah…..and you won’t have to walk around with “no service when using 3G, excessive dropped calls” with a certain Fruit phone. Oh yeah, and maybe they forgot to mention that, if for any reason, if you want to return your Storm in your first 30 Days, you actually get all of your money back. You don’t have to give ATT or Apple a 10% restocking fee like you do with a certain Fruit phone. These guys are a riot. Let’s lie and be misleading to keep our customers!

Aside from all the bias by BGR and dumb claims by AT&T, I wonder what RIM is thinking about seeing a memo like this from their largest customer? You have to think that if this is the way AT&T treats one of their biggest business partners, how much business is going to be discussed going into the future between the two? With Verizon going LTE in the future, this doesn’t bode well for AT&T. Classic idiots.

It seems that AT&T are shaking in their boots.

Why would they be so concerned about this touchscreen phone (BB 9530 Storm) and NOT about the other touchscreen phones that came out.
    WHY? They smell competition!!!!!!!!!!

    2 points:

    1) Competitive positioning is a key element to the sales process. When a customer asks questions, it would be best if the salesperson knew how to respond, ideally with cogent arguments that support the product being sold. Standard practice in any sales process in any industry.

2)When are the phone manufacturers going to understand that it is not just the phone itself, but the background infrastructure that makes the platform. The fact that every Blackberry is mutually incompatible with software for any other Blackberry means that, although it does the basic functionality well (phone and email), as a platform, it is abysmal. Poor development tools, extensive development effort to deploy on any volume of models, inconsistent user interface, etc.; I akin the Blackberry to the early days of Windows, where it is text based, with some rudimentary graphic elements.

Yes, we need some real competition to the iPhone out there. But without the background iTunes (music, movies, podcast, contacts, appointments, email, APPLICATIONS) in a consumer/user friendly delivery environment, available on your desktop, then everyone is playing catchup. The iPhone will continue with it’s rapid race to dominance, with that single platform holding market share previously reserved for a multitude of products from a company, or multiple products running a mobile OS.

Sounds to me like AT&T is treating RIM like the Redheaded Step Child as of late. First, endless delays with the Bold and 4.5 and now basically saying the Storm sucks and the iphone is god.

All seems pretty accurate? Read my post at 8:07am, and actually read the specs on the Storm that were released, on this very site! The internal documents confirm both multi touch and gesture touch on the storm. And again, read everything that I posted.

why does having evdo make it more of a world phone?
you really are a RIM fanboy arn’t you?

and the videos show no multitouch. Gestures is something different.

thanks WG for the anti-apple Rimboy stuff. Both are great devices and all the providers put out these sheets to help sell the devices that make them the most $$. Nothing shocking here.

Why do all of you freak out about whether or not the thing has Wifi? It’s ridiculous.

This is MOBILE device. Do you own a laptop computer? Good, me too. And when I’m near a reliable, free, and open Wifi connection, I open my computer, and Firefox and Outlook… I don’t get you whiners. Wifi just kills battery anyway, and when I’m MOBILE, I want a connection that can come with me–not one that ties me to a static location. The beauty of a Blackberry is that I can take care of emails quickly, all day long–without having to look for a Starbucks to steal their Wifi connection.

    Get over it.

The iPhone was the biggest and best release of a mobile phone ever. Nothing else is even remotely close. It doesn’t matter really if you happen to like the iPhone or at&t or Apple for that matter, the fact is undeniable.

Not sure if you remember but Verizon released a document comparing the iPhone to the Chocolate w/8gb sd card. They also claimed the Voyager was “the most anticipated phone of the year”.

Customers always feel like there is something bigger and better out there and they want it. My customers will ask about the Storm and the G1. The point of the release isn’t to bash the competition, it’s to give sales reps answers to the questions of our customers.

Lastly I don’t believe the Storm is going to be that great of a phone. RIM has demonstrated that while they have reliability, quality, and ease of use pegged, they simply aren’t the most innovated company on the planet. Hence I see the Storm being an LG Vu with a BB OS on it (aka a piece of crap) which is sad since I have carrierd a BB for years.

Oh and the Bold is being delayed because RIM can’t produce a stable build of the OS not because at&t doesn’t want it. It’s getting delayed again I know for a fact. It won’t be released until November.

    @Dtest54,

You are right, you have to pay for the turn by turn gps, but the documents show that it will have blackberry maps and stadalone gps, that you don’t have to pay for. And the documents actually show multi touch. You need to learn to read! This is actually posted on various websites, but I’ll give you the link!

    http://www.engadgetmobile.com/photos/verizon-tells-us-all-about-the-blackberry-storms-wow-factors-1/

Oh yeah, and about it being a world phone,

3.25-inch WITH 480 x 360 display (putting it slightly above the Bold) EV-DO Rev. A Quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2100MHz UMTS/HSPA 1GB onboard memory Full QWERTY (landscape) and Suretype Input (portrait) High Capacity microSD slot 3.2 MP camera with auto-focus, flash, and 2X Zoom Blackberry Device Software 4.7 OTA Software Loading HTML Browser with support for attachment downloads and video streaming (via RTSP) Editing of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents Standalone and aGPS (does that mean, GASP, GPS is unlocked?) Blackberry Media Sync (non-DRM iTunes media sync) Visual Voicemail (available post-launch, bummer!) Built-In Facebook/Flikr Support Built-In IM support for Yahoo, Google, AOL, and Windows Messenger Access to services such as BroadbandAccess, VZ navigator, VCast Music and Video, and VCast MobileTV (this info is on the Boy Genius site).

And it will sync with Itunes. RIM released software that allows it to do that. I already use it with my Blackberry Curve.

Business class devices NEED WiFi. Why? To help international travellers avoid international data roaming. Wanna check your email or browse the web? Just lock on to a free hotspot and go. International data can be as much as 2 cents per kb which is insane. Also Skype + WiFi = free international calls.

Of course I don’t expect the average consumer to think of this. I also don’t expect any Verizon fanboy to understand this either since they don’t cater to international users.

Guys, please relax…this document isn’t available to the masses. The little single slide powerpoint is just for employees/sales reps to get a basic understanding of the biggest launch this side of the Iphone. Questions will inevitiably (SP!) start coming to sales reps once the full media blitz picks up.

Again relax…customers aren’t seeing this. Shit how some of you jump to conclusions

Since its becoming widely available on a vast range of carriers without any major complaints about it, unlike the 3g issues of the initial software on the iphone 3g, isn’t it more likely that any delays are either marketting-related or a problem limited to at&t’s own network?

well said jeff. AT&T realizes the significance of this release and is at least showing signs that they are concerned about it. i am an IT Director and have distributed blackberrys to our regional managers…they love them. we have several people using the iPhone within our company as well. the iPhone is “cool”. it has a lot of fun applications that you can run on it. for the business world…there is nothing better than a blackberry. can’t wait to get my hands on this

And the Bold is delayed because of the OS? That’s funny. I heard it’s because of the 3G issues.

FAST internet that STAYS FAST ALL THE TIME, hence no need for WIFI.

YES YES I can see the Iphone has really set the bar!!
