HTC is just the first to release an Android phone, you will see just about every handset manufacturer release one. It will get even better in about 2 years when more than one chip is able to run Android (they limited it for the time being) allowing even more diversity.

I actually like the styling of the phone. It’s not the sexiest design ever- but it does look like it will hold up well over time. It isn’t glossy- so the finish will not highlight scratches and smudges the way the iPhone does. It may not have that WOW factor that a brand new iPhone has, but it doesn’t have the EWW factor that a scratched up iPhone has either.

I currently live in Prague, Czech Republic, and I was wondering if anyone knows when this will be available in Europe? Also, at the hotel where I work, we want to purchase new phones with more capabilities. Obviously the iPhone is not perfect for work purposes, however we want something that is fairly easy to use and can support multiple languages. Any suggestions?

Why oh why do people think this phone is ugly? It looks damned nice and I like that BGR stated the keyboard which everyone loathed without so much as touching one is excellent. I’m going to hold out for the white one, I actually like it the best, fisher-price styling and all.

While I agree this is definitely not HTC’s prettiest design (although it probably isn’t as ugly in person as it looks on the computer), but I wanted to correct one misconception in your post. The “data” portion of the G1 data plan does not cost $35. The unlimited data poriton is only $20. The remaining $15 is for unlimited text messages.

The data plan is really only 20 bucks, it’s the unlimited messaging bundle that pushes it to 35. The crap thing, I can’t get one even though I work for the company! I must wait for the official launch date to order it.

Is it just me or is that one of the fugliest phones HTC has ever designed?

Compared to their Touch Pro, I would be embarrased to carry that brick around.

I like the looks of Android. Even with some of the oversights and limitations in the OS, and the lack of TMobile 3G in 90% of the US, I’m still encouraged by the possibilities. But the hardware is horrible.

I sure hope that T-Mobile encourages HTC to release a Touch Pro or Touch HD with Android loaded on it. Or maybe even allow other hardware manuafacturers to make Android phones soon to have more offerings.

But there is no way I’m carrying that turd around in public.

I think I’ll wait 6 months and see if another Android option presents itself. By then hopefully Tmobile will have 3G in enough places to warrant the $35 / month data plan too.

one of those phone is not like the other, one of those phones is very ugly. I also agree that the OS was pretty laggy, especially the browser.
Good price though but looking like that it better be cheap. Hope the coming Sprint android phone will be a good one.

MadMike – of course it is disappointing that as of right now 3G data speeds are slow, but please keep in mind that T-Mobile is STILL in the process of launching and tweeking 3G. The great news is that even though the speeds aren’t what YOU want as of yet, they are still quite a bit faster than EDGE. Once 3G is finished launching, then you will see the speeds that you want.

seen the video, the device is really lagging and unresponsive, especially compared to the iphone.

android is quite good, but the htc g1 not so much.

The device is a little thick, it doesn’t have a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack & T-Mo limits its 3G data to 1GB and after that you are throttled to 50Kbps. Nice try, but not worth it.

HTC Headset? Ridiculous! Amazon MP3 but no 3.5 headjack. That’s just BAD design, I’m sorry. The CURVE had 3.5. Ugh.
HTC, give up already on your headphone adapter. Move to 3.5.
