T-Mobile Google G1: hands on!
That’s right. Get ready for upclose and personal photo snaps of T-Mobile’s Google G1 handset. We took a bunch of shots and even got our Bold and iPhone all up in that. Couple first impressions? It’s smaller than we thought, the keyboard is great, the screen is pretty responsive, and we’re totally looking forward to picking one of these up. What you guys think?

You can get information on the G-1 site with Chrome, but with Firefox it still says “Come Back later”
BG, would you replace your BlackBerry with G1?
I think HTC could come up with a better design, like HTC Touch HD.
Uhh.. we crashed the Upgrade part of T-Mobile’s website. I had to call to get info, and they said the whole upgrade system is offline.
HTC Headset? Ridiculous! Amazon MP3 but no 3.5 headjack. That’s just BAD design, I’m sorry. The CURVE had 3.5. Ugh.
HTC, give up already on your headphone adapter. Move to 3.5.
Pretty poor device for Android’s debut. Look forward to better handsets.
Hey how about letting the system catch up before trying to buy. I did and I was able to purchasea Black G1. Too bad I have to wait until 10/22 to get to experience it. I would like to thank BGR for being knowledgeable and helping me to find the inner tech guy in myself. You are inspirational.
The device is a little thick, it doesn’t have a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack & T-Mo limits its 3G data to 1GB and after that you are throttled to 50Kbps. Nice try, but not worth it.
seen the video, the device is really lagging and unresponsive, especially compared to the iphone.
android is quite good, but the htc g1 not so much.
MadMike – of course it is disappointing that as of right now 3G data speeds are slow, but please keep in mind that T-Mobile is STILL in the process of launching and tweeking 3G. The great news is that even though the speeds aren’t what YOU want as of yet, they are still quite a bit faster than EDGE. Once 3G is finished launching, then you will see the speeds that you want.
does it have an aim app?
That’s a pretty frickin sweet phone. The screen, from what I can see, is just as nice as the iPhone’s screen. Shit, so many nice phones coming out!
Thank god i had a line that was eligible for upgrade… I ordered me a Tmobile G1 Black today C’Mon everybody!!!!
Damn Ugly.. Still looks like fischer price toys.
one of those phone is not like the other, one of those phones is very ugly. I also agree that the OS was pretty laggy, especially the browser.
Good price though but looking like that it better be cheap. Hope the coming Sprint android phone will be a good one.
Is it just me or is that one of the fugliest phones HTC has ever designed?
Compared to their Touch Pro, I would be embarrased to carry that brick around.
I like the looks of Android. Even with some of the oversights and limitations in the OS, and the lack of TMobile 3G in 90% of the US, I’m still encouraged by the possibilities. But the hardware is horrible.
I sure hope that T-Mobile encourages HTC to release a Touch Pro or Touch HD with Android loaded on it. Or maybe even allow other hardware manuafacturers to make Android phones soon to have more offerings.
But there is no way I’m carrying that turd around in public.
I think I’ll wait 6 months and see if another Android option presents itself. By then hopefully Tmobile will have 3G in enough places to warrant the $35 / month data plan too.
Yikes. how do they expect to compete with Xperia, HTC Touch Diamond/Pro, iPhone and Samsung I900 with a device that looks like a toy.
Why can’t they put android on the touch pro! Why do we have to be stuck with WinMo!
The data plan is really only 20 bucks, it’s the unlimited messaging bundle that pushes it to 35. The crap thing, I can’t get one even though I work for the company! I must wait for the official launch date to order it.
@Shane – this is def off topic and may be a dumb question, but how on earth did you get a little picture in place of the fake profile pic icon??
@ Shane
While I agree this is definitely not HTC’s prettiest design (although it probably isn’t as ugly in person as it looks on the computer), but I wanted to correct one misconception in your post. The “data” portion of the G1 data plan does not cost $35. The unlimited data poriton is only $20. The remaining $15 is for unlimited text messages.
“If your total data usage in any billing cycle is more than 1GB, your data throughput for the remainder of that cycle may be reduced to 50 kbps or less.” – Tmobile
ouch.
@Dtest54 Even if you have unlimited data???
@Lilly: It’s not the speed, its the 1GB cap on the data. I’m hoping that gets better when they make the 3G network better.
^ Stop streaming porn all day and night at the firehouse. Problem solved.
Please talk about the build quality and if it feels cheap or solid. Also, did you get to test calls? how is call quality? Please cover this on the front page for all to read
