Nokia E72 and E63 are Different Handsets; E72 Coming to AT&T with FP2
Ok, there’s a whole lot of back and forth on the net with regards to the Nokia E72 / E63 or whatever it is that showed its pretty little face in the recently-leaked promotional video from Nokia shown above. We know that the slider has been dubber E75 thanks to a few leaked live images but the E71 look-a-like is still a bit of a mystery. Until now. Two BGR tipsters and an anonymous third source have suggested that this upcoming QWERTY Eseries will in fact be dubbed E72. What’s more, it will be a branded handset available exclusively through AT&T. That’s right people, it looks like AT&T is finally going to give a little love to a decent S60 handset. Aside from the differences we already pointed out, the E72 should be pretty identical to the E71 specs-wise with one other major revision… Feature Pack 2. Sorry E71 owners, it looks like AT&T customers will finally have an edge on the unbranded folks. So just as the E62 was AT&T’s version of the E61, the E72 will be AT&T’s E71. Great! Now that we’ve cleared that up, it’s time to start digging into the mysterious third upcoming Eseries that surfaced today – the E63.

I wonder if they read my petition.

any idea of a release date?
bah! they’ll rip out the wifi, cut the ram 75% and jank up the firmware.
go buy your car at the gas station
@Eric you beat me to it haha. I was going to say that they will probably rip out the WiFi.
Having used the E71-2 on AT&T for a couple of months I can say that the phone is great but the network sucks. I’ve pretty much confirmed that the phone is not to blame for reception problems, but it does look like other brands fare better in the many problem areas around San Diego.
When AT&T comes out with their E72 I hope Nokia comes up with a firmware upgrade to the E71 to help it in low signal areas and not take so long to pick up a signal when it loses it. I wish such upgrade would come out now! Maybe new firmware will never fix the problem.
@Jorge
If they actually pull it off this year and dont mess it up I’ll buy THREE.
hahaha.
Right, It’ll sit in their qualification labs for 8 to 14 months like the N75 rubbish.
Interesting, wonder what that means if you have an E71 on AT&T. I just got mine in and loving the device, but not the email situation so much. When I had it activated the store employees were loving the device. Guess they’ll see it in the store soon enough.
So any word on whether the camera is being improved? The crappy camera on my E71 is by far my biggest complaint.
It’s coming out until Feb
What Is “Feature Pack 2″ ? I have just ordered the E71. I was getting tired of waiting for Blackberry to bring out the bold or javilan for AT&T.
@ Gary Wilkins: Feature Pack 2 is the user interface of Symbian S60. Its on the N78, to me its just eye candy, its pretty cool but not wont change my mind on the E71. I love the stainless steel on the E71, the E72 looks to have alot of plastic. The E71 was not equipped with feature pack 2 because it was released earlier, and there are alot more applications/programs that compatible with feature pack 1. As a business user its better to have stability with FP1 than to have eye candy with FP2. By the time E72 is released (Q1 2009), there should be less compatibility issues with applications and also updated apps. But trust me, the E71 is the one to get!!! Great performance with Awesome build quality. There is nothing on the market that feels like E71 (except the Nokia 8800 series). BTW after getting the E71, you wont care too much for Blackberrys.
Feature Pack 2 will have castrated SIP abilities, i.e. you won’t be able to use your favorite VoIP companies anymore since the phone does not “natively” support SIP anymore.

FP2 sucks big time for that reason, IMO!
I disagree with this rumor. The E72 (or whatever is featured in the video) looks to me like a different construction than the E71. It’s got a rounded back all around, and the camera is defiantly different. The Nokia Blog has already pointed out that the keyboards are different as well.
@SIP Rules! : The article you’ve linked to states that SIP is not on the Nseries devices, but is still included in Eseries devices. So the E72 and the E63 should both have SIP built in.
i wonder if you can debrande it like the n75 if you had the unbranded product code
I hope Nokia doesn’t put a 2.5mm jack on the phone. It’s why I never bought a E71. I’m not into buying and carrying another iPod or a headphones adapter. If it has a 3.5mm jack, I’ll take an E75, please!
I’ve also realize that the S60 platform is more mature than the Blackberry OS. If your enterprise doesn’t have a BES or that it’s for personal consumption, there’s no real advantage of BIS compared to pulling emails (if you have a large data plan).
That rights about FP2 and VOIP. Although it SHOULDN’T be too hard to write a VOIP app, most of the easy ones seem to use the Nokia one. Removing VOIP would be a major win for at&t.
What happened to the E71x?

Yes.I think it very good and I will buy one.
