Palm Treo Pro coming to AT&T?

Though you’ll have to wait a while for the privilege of owning an AT&T-branded Treo Pro, if you’re into that sort of thing your day of glory will come. During their quarterly earnings report, Palm confirmed that the Treo Pro will be officially released on an American carrier. Given T-Mobile’s non-existent relationship with Palm at this point, it seems clear that the intended customer is, in fact, AT&T. That’s good news, but given the lack of a confirmed date we’re left to speculate on the arrival time-frame. Palm mentioned that November would be a bit thin on the revenue side due to lengthy carrier certification processes, so it seems like December might be the most logical bet. Anyone going to hold off on a handset upgrade in favor of this Wi-Fi, GPS, and HSDPA equipped monster?

WM on another Palm?!?!? I must be in the monority here, because I can’t stand WM. I’ve got the att moto q9 with the 6.1 update and it’s such a pain to use! I’m intrigued by the “panels” on the SE X1, but i read somewhere that once you get deeper into the menu’s it’s all just WM underneath. Any truth to this? WM is just so cumbersome. blech..

Couldn’t “American carrier” mean a CDMA carrier as well?

Without a new OS other than Palm OS circa 1897 and Windows Mobile OS circa 2004, the Treo pro won’t be a privilege that many people will seek.

@Johhny: It’s a GSM phone. Phone manufacturers don’t like to make CDMA phones. Now before all the CDMA phanboys go all flamewar - for better or for worse, the entire world is settling on GSM and a decent majority will be settling on LTE.

It’s more expensive to create a bunch of different versions of phones, and even more so to include CDMA and GSM chipsets to allow the phone to work overseas (”worldphone”). Heck, they don’t even like making GSM phones in the NA radio frequencies. For a while the US got shit for phones, because the handset makers though Americans were cheap bastards that only wanted to get “free” subsidized phones. That’s why Europe always had the new hotness and us Yankeess got squat.

That since has changed, and the American market is booming. But, even if we travel abroad or don’t we always like to be prepared for “everything”. That’s why we buy gigantic SUV’s and pack them with nuclear holocaust survival gear next to the diaper bag and the beach ball and pool noodles. Hence, people like “world phones”. Problem is, to get a CDMA phone to “word” status it needs two distinct chipsets. That costs Muchos Mula. Now, I’m not saying all GSM phones are world phones - they are not. We operate in a different frequency band than the rest of the world. However most people think of GSM and go “Oh, I can use this in France if I ever get out of my $50,000 in debt and go there, ever” - even though they probably can’t use the phone in France or will ever get the chance to.

Moral of the story is, 99.999% of the population are a bunch of insipid, mindless cattle too stupid to make an educated decision or do any amount of fact checking. We rely on buzzwords that don’t tell us squat and disregard any real tangible specifications.

    mad mike,
get off the soapbox and stop calling people mindless lemmings. this is clearly an attempt by palm to regain lost market share in the smart phone industry over the past few years. sure, there are going to be the people that always try to keep up with the joneses with the latest tech gear, but for a lot of business users (who this device is intended for) there’s a lot of practicality to have a “world” phone. being that at&t is one of, if not the leading provider in this space, its a perfectly understandable play for the boys at palm to attempt to salvage the company in the new era of business devices.

What’s the point of the rant of CDMA vs. GSM? Palm has made both GSM and CDMA phones for years upon years, they’re not Apple. I do think CDMA is a possibility, after all the Treo 800w has suspiciously failed to show up on Verizon Wireless (which has an infamously lengthy carrier certification process…)

Though if I were to be a betting person, I’d say at&t is still most likely- after all, if they were making a CDMA version of this thing you’d think SOMETHING would have leaked out about it.

I purposely said I wasn’t getting into the CDMA vs GMS discussion. I’m an AT&T consumer btw… not a verizon fanboy. All I have to say is, Palm has lost that living feeling, and now its gone, gone, gone…

Shit, now I have that song stuck in my head. I’m sorry, I just got back from a wedding and I’m slightly drunk.

Mad Mike: It’s “that lovin’ feeling”, not “living”. Second of all, Windows Mobile rocks, and so does Palm for using it. At&t should get it.
