BlackBerry OS 5.0: your first looky looky

Remember when we first mentioned OS 5.0 nearly one and a half years ago? Yes, it’s been that long. Although that version matured into what we now know as OS 4.5, earlier this year, we broke the story about the formal introduction of OS 5.0 within the walls of Waterloo. Many revisions and version updates later, including a few different creative direction changes — we now have OS 4.6.0 (Bold and Pearl Flip), as well as the upcoming OS 4.6.1 (Javelin/8900 and 8350i) and OS 4.7.0 (Storm) — OS 4.5.0 still hasn’t been officially released in the United States, home of RIM’s largest user base. Hit the jump for the full run down!
So what do we have for you? Yes, that’s right, OS 5.0 for the BlackBerry Curve. For those of you who have looked on enviously at the slick-looking ’Clock’ application on the Bold and Pearl Flip, you will one day be able to have this rather simple Alarm-replacement application on your last generation device. You can throw in the accessibility options and most of the other features found in OS 4.6, as well.

One new feature we noticed was the “Files” application. Although it doesn’t appear to work, this new feature appears to add network share access, which has been a fairly popular request for a number of years. Assuming that BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 will likely be available by the time OS 5.0 is available, we will make the assumption that this will be a new server-client feature. Let’s just hope none of us are sporting walking canes by that time. You know, RIM kind of has a bad track record when it comes to release dates…

To be honest though, having been on a BlackBerry Bold for a few weeks now, this new OS seems a bit underwhelming at this point. Granted, this is a fairly early beta and has a long way to go in the life cycle process (it is good to see RIM working on this version prior to wrapping up OS 4.5), so there’s still time to really “WOW!” each and every one of us. However, until that time, we think this version should currently be considered OS 4.6 for the Curve.

The 5.0 OS should have been came out but I can’t wait to see what it looks like.

Hey BGR - remember your whole “we’ve been had” post. Well verizonwireless.com/storm works just fine now. Sorry for the HTTP glitch.

This is great news and all, but seriously, RIM is bringing their products to market all wrong as of lately. I mean, if the States, are considered their largest market base, then why hasn’t the Bold been released here yet and the list goes on. Just my opinion, but RIM is just pissing off a lot of customers, I believe including, myself.

Dude. Its not rim holding it back, its att!

I agree. The network providers have the final say on which software revision is available for the phones. That’s why Alltel’s 8130 has os 4.3.0.81 (I believe) and Sprint and few other carriers have released 4.3.0.127 (might be 177 can’t remeber the numbers exactly as I’m running 4.5.0.77).

Thanks for bringing this to us. Agree, it looks underwhelming - one would hope that the new 5.0 will take a bit of a new direction.
Of course, you had to go and say “You know, RIM kind of has a bad track record when it comes to release dates…”
Maybe the truth is a little closer to “You know, the BGR kind of has a bad track record when it comes forecasting release dates…”

I guess the theme should be like os4.6 precision theme .
Well, it’s not.

I would have had thought with maybe 5.0 it would of been completly redesigned.
If they could some how allow you to run some type of BlackBerry server from your home computer so that you can retrieve files.. that would be great.

@Glenn
They do have something like that. It is called Blackberry Unite! I am not yelling, they really did put an exlamation mark in the product name.

You can’t really blame AT&T for RIM products being slow to market. RIM chose AT&T, not the other way around, and with RIM’s market position they are able to put a great deal of pressure on any carrier, even AT&T. If RIM is going to let itself get pushed around, then perhaps they should stop the 5.0 development until they can find a way to atop AT&T from teabagging them. Hey, that gives me an idea for a new RIM slogan: “Please buy a BlackBerry. . .it will help us grow a pair and finally stop AT&T’s teabagging.”

That is AT&T holding it up to sell iPhones

I can’t wait for this to come out! If this comes out in a reasonable amount of time, I’m sticking with my Curve 8320 instead of the Javelin or Pearl Flip.

WHERE IS THE ATT UPDATE??? F*CKERS

I still say AT&T is holding it up. Could be iPhone or could be the software. It took Sprint almost a year to work with RIM to fix the EVDO data dropping problem with the 8830. They kept pushing it aside and sending me replacements until one of their employees started having a problem and posted a message on their buzzaboutwireless website. The wireless providers have controlled Windows Mobile phones software forever.. HTC-6800… Enough said.

When is the 8350 for nextel coming out??

Wish there was more cohesive support & rollout of RIM’s OS. I’m running 4.5 (official Orange UK) on T-mo US @ the suggestion of a tmo rep after my 4.2 JVM 517-ed. Loving the new (catchup) “features” & “stability” but hating the unsupported nature of the beast with various apps & themes. I will likely pay out of pocket for the Javelin when it’s out.
