BlackBerry OS 5.0: your first looky looky

Remember when we first mentioned OS 5.0 nearly one and a half years ago? Yes, it’s been that long. Although that version matured into what we now know as OS 4.5, earlier this year, we broke the story about the formal introduction of OS 5.0 within the walls of Waterloo. Many revisions and version updates later, including a few different creative direction changes — we now have OS 4.6.0 (Bold and Pearl Flip), as well as the upcoming OS 4.6.1 (Javelin/8900 and 8350i) and OS 4.7.0 (Storm) — OS 4.5.0 still hasn’t been officially released in the United States, home of RIM’s largest user base. Hit the jump for the full run down!

So what do we have for you? Yes, that’s right, OS 5.0 for the BlackBerry Curve. For those of you who have looked on enviously at the slick-looking ’Clock’ application on the Bold and Pearl Flip, you will one day be able to have this rather simple Alarm-replacement application on your last generation device. You can throw in the accessibility options and most of the other features found in OS 4.6, as well.

One new feature we noticed was the “Files” application. Although it doesn’t appear to work, this new feature appears to add network share access, which has been a fairly popular request for a number of years. Assuming that BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 will likely be available by the time OS 5.0 is available, we will make the assumption that this will be a new server-client feature. Let’s just hope none of us are sporting walking canes by that time. You know, RIM kind of has a bad track record when it comes to release dates…

To be honest though, having been on a BlackBerry Bold for a few weeks now, this new OS seems a bit underwhelming at this point. Granted, this is a fairly early beta and has a long way to go in the life cycle process (it is good to see RIM working on this version prior to wrapping up OS 4.5), so there’s still time to really “WOW!” each and every one of us. However, until that time, we think this version should currently be considered OS 4.6 for the Curve.

I want to know why there aren’t any beta copys of 5.0 floating around? If they are “so close” to a release of 4.5, then why not move to the next step? Besides, who knows when the Bold will be available in the U.S.; heck it could be Christmas!!!!!

@Fantom Cause the “next step” you speak of is fixing 4.6 finalizing 4.7 and fixing the already existing issues with that and why in gods name would you even want a beta 5.0?..look at the screenshot, it’s so freakin beta they still have code from 4.6 implemented just to make it work!

And you wanna load it onto your device? Apparently you must enjoy JVM errors and device crashes if that is the case lol!!

AT&T dropped the ball on this one. And to think I recently dropped nextel for this. Well now I know how the rest of the world feel’s when a new product is launched in the here in the states, but not elsewhere.

    touche’ AT&T

but if nothing happens by mid October then I’ll pay the early termination fee and go back to nextel. and that sucks.

Hello everyone… I just wanted to ask you a question. If this new version will be released, the OS 5.0, will it work for BB 8800 too? Because all I read is that it will be for the Curve…
    I wanna be updated too!!!
    Thankx everyone…

I know it’s a simple request, but ALL that I ask for in a future update (and it better come soon) are two things. First is one extra line in the appointments app that let’s you choose a Profile to be active during that appointment and then have the Profile switched back to previous after the appointment. Is it really that hard??!!! Second, the alarm clock app needs to have a dual-alarm function and the ability to program the alarm to go off at certain times for different days. I hate having to program the stupid thing every night. Really simple guys… I guess these suggestions are a little too intuitive for RIM to have thought of them though.

I believe the 8700 series is going to see an upgrade to 4.5 so the possibility of a 5.0 release for the 8800 series is quite possible. I guess it depends on the amount of memory the operating system takes to run. It appears most of the 8800 and 8300 (with the exception of the 8330’s) only have 64 megs of ram where the 8330’s have 96. Not sure if this will be a factor or not.

Why waste the time on adding in the new theme from the 4.6+ OS’s when developing the baseline code. The theme will be one of the last things developed IMO.

i just updated my bb 8310 yesterday from os 4.2 to os 4.5, and i must say, im not impressed. the only changes were no memo pad, which was an app that i had used quite frequently, and a video and sound recorder app… rim needs to start getting more creative to be honest.

Will the 5.0 os be available for the 8800? I’ve though about ugrading devices and I’ve had the curve 8320 and the build quality just doesn’t seem as good and the storm seems to be getting the same dust behind the lens issue as the 8300 series. Anyway I’m sure you’ll keep us posted. Thanks

The way it goes. Is rim releaae beta version of there os to carries and devs. Then carries and dev send in bug fixes and when carries belive the os is up to there standers thell release it to the public carriers try there harddest release a stable os cause if they didn’t that means customers will complain the shat isn’t working and thell lose money by x amount of ppl. Calling tech support witch intern cost them even more money gets use .. So basically carriers are looking out for customer satisfaction and there own gross and revenue

Well, as far as I’ve seen the biggest update is bb messenger really, like some other people said a better browser and how about better html email??, not only that the video playback is somewhat sketchy on my 8330m and when I play a 3gp file it may hesitate to load say, youtube mobile, it won’t work but then you go back and do it again and it loads, and I even have 3 bars, and I would LOVE to see and update on these silly icons, if they are moving ahead with all these snazzy new phones, aka tour, then they shuld rlly update the look of the os and its themes, altho it is not top priority I’m sure, I still found my htc touch pro to have a lot more customitability etc. But the buginess, well we won’t go there…..
