Sony Ericsson open to considering non-Windows Mobile OS for future Xperia versions

While this may not come to fruition for a while, if ever, Sony Ericsson has auspiciously left the door open to the possibility of future iterations of their upcoming Xperia line to run on an operating system other than Windows Mobile. According to Reuters SE is refusing to commit to an single OS for the life of the Xperia. While this doesn’t explicitly suggest deviation from their current platform of choice, it also doesn’t explicitly refute such speculation either. While a non-WM Xperia might be ways off, we can always dream about an Android-based handset with the Xperia’s excellent hardware specs. Right?

Looking at the overall hardware design, there’s nothing really shockingly WM. This thing looks like it could easily run something else provided the drivers are available.

How long before hackers get Android running on this thing? I’m betting a couple of weeks.

SE can easily manufacture the drivers. I too would love to see anything except WM on this device.

It would be cool to see Android or S60 touch on an X1. Still, hopefully the Panel interface will improve enough upon the Windows 6.1 “backbone”.

It’s not like Sony was ever known for their software, their wisdom in OS selection, nor their followup software support.

    Know what you’re getting into.

I would also guess Android or S60 touch. Hopefully Android, Symbian in general is looking more and more dated.

Even if Sony has fixed the Windows Mobile OS for now, it seems responsible next time around with the xperia x1 sony ericcson would consider a more compatible operating system.
