BlackBerry Storm: we’ve been had

I’ll keep this short, but as most of you that are following the BlackBerry Storm developments over the past couple days know, Verizon has “introduced” the BlackBerry Storm internally. They even published a coming soon page complete with Storm image. The page was then removed today, coincidentally after every major site that mattered had linked to it and posted. Does anyone not see the scam being played out before our eyes? Introduction “internally” and then removing the coming soon page? No press release, no official announcement… am I the only one who’s seeing the bigger picture?
UPDATE: Here’s the link for the actual video hosted on Verizon’s site. Thanks, guys!
UPDATE 2: Storm page is back uppppppz.

sorry dude you got me… I dont see the bigger picture unless youre saying start some hype and not meet the expected release dates..

Spell it out for us…

The intro page may be down, but there are still adds on VZW.com that link to the nonexistant page (It redirects to the main page).

good point. I’m still not sure this is going to be a good phone…

Obviously not going to be released until Q1 09 at the earliest… Thanks for letting us know, yawn!
I love how the verizon people think this phone will only take like 3 months of development and research while the bold took years. *HINT* They’ve never done this before (look at the time it took apple to develop the iPhone) idiots.

Yeah BG, you may need to spell it out.
Is it viral marketing or are they masochists?
I think its more of a “oops, we f*cked up! Take that page down now!”
Last you showed us, that device wasn’t close to ready for prime time, unless they are going to dangle it over our heads like water to a camel in the desert and then pull a Bold on us and hold it up for 3 months (Yeah, I totally went there).
I doubt they fixed all the snafu’s this quick.
But, if you have reason to believe - lay it out because I’m not seeing it.

This thing is going to be in “internal testing” limbo for months…

yeah like the rest of us, i don’t get it either. BGR, what’s the bigger picture?
i really hope they stick to their november release date and not Q1 2009 like hollaman predicts.

Do you guys honestly think that the storm will come out anytime even remotely close to the bold. hahaha

Well… deal me out. I’ll be switching to AT&T to get a Bold.

@Hollaman and @Mike
The phone has finished testing and has been in development for several months, since late last year or early this year. The multi-touch revolutionary UI was patented in February.

I’m pretty sure they’re dropping these tidbits because they KNOW the HTC Dream and Android are coming out within the next week.
Verizon doesn’t want its customers to flock to T-Mobile because of the “Google Phone” so they’re using the Storm as bait to keep people in place… a “follow my finger” if you will…
Its a smart move on their part, to be honest. They can’t just let the HTC Dream walk away with their customers. So instead, they’re letting people know there is something that they think is “better” and “cooler” right around the corner.
If they can wait out/for the Storm.
But BGR… spill the beans… what are you thinking here?

The Storm was in development before the iPhone was. I think BG can confirm that. And if he cant, I know some other people that can.
BG: What are you hinting at? Don’t be coy, tell us.

Just saying this was done for pure marketing hype, and I’m pretty sure it was a “rush” job in an attempt to hold off loyal BlackBerry customers from looking elsewhere. RIM hasn’t released a “new” product in the U.S. since the 8300 back in May. No, Pearl 2 and CDMA Curves and 8800s don’t count. It just seems strange to me, that’s all. You’ve got Verizon prepping corporate store managers on talking points when the device isn’t even announced? It makes no sense at all. Why not just officially announce it? I don’t believe this has ever been done before, and if it has, I’ve never seen it… especially with a BlackBerry.

I don’t get all the hype over the Dream? Why would Verizon be worried about people leaving for it? TMob’s non-existant 3G network? The fugly a$$ handset with an OS that isn’t even finished (Bluetooth pls)? Either way, Verizon needs to get it together…their phone selection is pretty droll for such a large carrier, they need the Storm.

@BG
What are we missing?!?

The “talking points” image specifically mentions bloggers buzzing on the internet about the phone. It’s pretty obvious they’re trying to use sites like this to get excitement about the Storm going, I think…
But if this is really an October release (or even early 09), this is rather late in the game to not have any official releases at all, isn’t it?

Exactly. Its middle of September, yet they are pulling these stunts when the device is set to be released in November? Seriously, 2 months away and they’re giving out talking points? Marketing hype, and we fell for it.

could be a very good hack job…not a Verizon “insider” putting this info out

Yeah, BG, “spill the beans…what are you thinking here?”
Why do I get the feeling that you ’shit’ on RIM every chance you get.
And conversely, ‘kiss’ Apple’s ass, every chance you get.
Your arrogance is starting to wear thin!! Give it a rest, already.

I work for a major carrier and I’ve been told no new CDMA product until 2009. As far as RIM using Verizon to bait you BGR, I think they are tired of you stealing their “Thunder” (heh heh yes what a great pun , could not resist) and now they are making you their unwitting servant. Touche I say!

You get that feeling because you are an idiot ‘CarBob’.

Yo BG hold on here.. Now Im not hating on you but you cant call both sides on a coin toss.
In one post youre saying..But we’re still holding firm on our “about one week after November 1st” launch time frame, as told to us by multiple sources…and now youre saying..Seriously, 2 months away and they’re giving out talking points? Marketing hype, and we fell for it.
So either your sources are blowing smoke out of their asses or you just dont want to say fuck it we have no clue on this thing.

hey BG, way to crawl out from underneath that rock, and do an actual post buddy. I thought “kelly” had taken over the site!
And I think its too early to start calling shenanigans. Everyone just take it easy…
