As to your question of how does it communicate with the BIS at the network provider or the BES at the enterprise? Via normal (encrypted) TCP/IP I suspect. The physical layer (radio network) has nothing to do with the data layer.

As far as do you need WiFi: I work for days in interior office locations where no cell network’s signal is going to penetrate (everyone’s cellphone has zero bars in this location). When I am there, my Blackberry is just a belt decoration.

My friends with their iPhones can continue to communicate with our corporate email server and stay connected, because our company has exceptional WiFi coverage.

Therefore, while it may be fine for some who have access to WiFi in all the locations they travel, not all of us are so fortunate. There are ski slopes that have WiFi access points and no Verizon coverage.

All I am saying is that don’t let your personal experiences cloud your vision for what others may want or need.

For me, the lack of WiFi is a deal breaker and I will seriously consider an iPhone if the Storm doesn’t have WiFi. I really don’t want to leave Verizon (been with them or their predecessor companies for 20 years), but I can’t wait for them to get WiFi any more.

I am hoping that AT&T will have the coverage I need. I know that I will be testing very carefully before I make the switch.

As far as pricing, you have to admit that this phone is positioned (at least by VZW) to compete directly with the iPhone. So pricing has to be comparable. Knowing VZW’s arrogant attitude, they will probably price it a tad higher ($249 w/ 2 year contract) because they believe this to be a far superior device. That would be a pretty great price considering it comes w/ an 8gb card and SIM card.

Verizon does not have ANY blackberry devices with wifi (sprint’s version of the Curve comes w/ wifi) so I dont see why they would start now.

GPS will be most certainly locked down. Verizon is not going to release a QUAD-BAND device that could be hacked and allow them to use any GPS solution they want. I know everyone out here hates paying extra $$ monthly to VZW, but you have to give them credit for VZ Navigator. It may be one of the best mobile apps ever created.

And just like when the iPhone first came out, no one knew exactly how they would like the touch screen with multi-touch. It is now the standard to which all touch screen phones are measured. This phone was rumored to have a glass screen that supported multi-touch, so I think we will all have to wait and get our hands on one to pass judgement on a brand new technology.

Personally, that is the key. How will you be able to type on it? I can fly on my Curve, and even playing w/ an iPhone or the Dare, I can make it work pretty well. More so with the iPhone because of the predictive/corrective input software. I can deal with pushing the screen to select icons and messages and links, etc… but when it comes to hammering out an email or a text, it needs to perform just like a Berry does now or all the other cool features just go out the window.

honestly i am not even thinking of buying it anymore, this is 2008, if your phone does not offer wifi then you can not compete
