Verizon Wireless Blackberry Storm Confirmed, duh!
GlydeGuy over at Howard Forum leaked some Blackberry Storm Goodness. Remember, it’s the 15th today, kids. No pricing or release date but we can confirm that “click” touch interface, full HTML browser, 3.2MP camera, and a very high resolution screen. Take that AT&T with your eternally delayed Blackberry Bold. Now if we could just keep VZW from locking down the GPS, we’d have the epitome of perfection in a phone. Start the drooling now! Sadly there’s no Wi-Fi like we reported, though. Oh well.
Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

Autonomous GPS will be unlocked on this device. Assisted GPS (aGPS) will only be supported by approved applications.

@Perspective,
You must have the final version of this phone in your hands with the full spec sheet. “It lacks the “kickass biz e-mail” that is that makes other RIM QWERTY products special. It can “sync” with iTunes, but the built in media player is juvenile, and the interface looks about as impressive as, well, other Blackberry products, each of which require some kind of rolling tracking device.”
Interestingly, you know exactly what it lacks, without having the full specs or the phone itself. You sir, are an idiot.

verizon guy,
you have a confirmation on the gps? if it’s true, that would be great. and are you saying that there will be gps apps that you can use outside of vznav?

Since the Storm was designed to support “3G everywhere” (i.e. HSUPA + EV-DO Rev. A) the case for wifi isn’t as strong as on other devices.
Also, a note on the usefulness of a touchscreen Blackberry for business email: the Storm uses a “clickscreen” specifically because it reduces the likelihood of unintended keystrokes. By minimizing unintended key strokes, typing on a Storm should offer a better experience than typing on other touchscreen devices. Obviously it won’t be the same as typing on a Bold or a Curve, and it will probably take some time to get used to.

I see Perspective has transferred his hating from the first posting of the announcement to this one as well. But then again what was the purpose of the iphone? The fact that it stole it’s idea from the LG PRADA and it’s touch screen from PALM/WINMO? The fact that it has no video recording, a stupid camera, no MMS, no cut and paste? But it’s the best phone that everyone wants on the worst network COMPARED to Verizon, right? yea i thought so…go get some sleep and stop hatin’ idiot…you sound less and less intelligent every single time you decide to pound your fingers away on the keyboard

wow FIRSTLY, VZW has NEVER crippled a blackberry’s GPS, they will however block that shitty maps program they comes with the device to not work, but google maps works perfectly fine, as well as there VZnav and other gps products, get the facts straight first.

The data is not slow on the iPhone, 3G is pretty fast.
I have a feeling this phone won’t have wi-fi and the GPS will be locked.
This is one reason I went ahead and switched to the iPhone. I will still go and look at this phone, but I am not really liking the “click” feature.

I really can’t wait for this handset. I have a TMo and ATT service and I really don’t want VZW service…but if it really is locked down for life on VZW, then I will buckle down and get the phone…I can’t wait…I just got ahold of the Kickstart (Pearl Flip) and it’s a dream…

WiFi is a good backup to EVDO, it’s good to have, but not a deal breaker to me.

I’m going to wait until I try the click feature in person before I pass judgement on it- if it works well I could see it being the next revolution in touch screen phone interface technology, but if it doesn’t then it could very well be this phone’s downfall.

They do cripple it. I had a BB 8830 from VZW and Google Maps only used Triangulation to find my location and no other GPS apps would work. VZ Nav would work just fine and if you had a GPS puck then you could use Google Maps to find your location. It’s all over the http://www.crackberry.com forums. There is a thread 70+ pages deep with people trying to figure out how to unlock the GPS on the 8830.

Yup, Terry’s right. I thought my Google Maps GPS worked too but it was only triangulation. Still pretty handy, don’t get me wrong and may work just fine for many people. However, it doesn’t give pin-point accuracy like normal GPS systems. Me the triangulation works just fine, I can follow map.

@ Terry The 3G may be fast (when it works)but AT&T’s 3g coverage is next to none… Just take a look at the coverage map.

BTW, the pic of the phone does look really sick!!

what you said about the GPS ..I was just writing the same thing. In my area the triangulation stinks, not even close. My only choice is VZ Nav or a puck. I chose the latter.

Well the current VZNAV for blackberries is below par, however the update for blackberries is scheduled for release this week, with the updated 3D maps, movie features etc..

@ Terry: The official Verizon 4.5 OS update for the 8830, 8330 and 8130 can’t get here soon enough!

YOU get your facts straight… there isn’t a SINGLE Blackberry device on VZW that DOESN’T have it GPS locked down. The only app that works with GPS on Blackberrys is VZNavigator. Nothing else works.

Everyone on this site keeps mentioning
“No Wifi this”
and “No WIFI that”.
Although WiFI is a nice alternative, its not a critical feature…at least for me. Home, Work or out and about, I always have EV-DO…2 bars the least!
Hate to break it to you but you wouldnt need WiFi if your network wasn’t shitty.
Just sayin…

FYI, Verizon BlackBerry users with a business account can choose to use Telenav GPS Navigator instead of VZNavigator–as of July 15 it can use the built-in GPS on BlackBerry 8830, 8330 and 8130 devices. You will need to contact your account rep for details on how to download the Telenav software and add the feature to your account.

We will never be able to use the full device that was designed by RIM without paying extra as long as it is put on VZW network. this phone should not be compared head to head with the iPod that has a cell antena. If the Storm is released in non-lockdown mode it might be a fair comparison, but until then…

I was really excited about this phone.
But every time I see it, I have to say I’m underwhelmed.
Guess I’ll wait for the Javelin.

@Kai,
Alright, I’ll bite. I read that the 8350i is for the iDEN network, not a hybrid CDMA-iDEN device, and therefore NOT a CDMA device with WiFi.
So, um… you’re still an idiot?

the phone looks awesome. there’s so many great things about it. to name a few
1. Touch screen that presses and feels like a real button
2. Landscape keyboard
3. Looks like compressed Internet browser
3. Unbeatable screen resolution (same as bold & better than iPhone)
4. On a real 3G data network (not some spots on a map like AT&T’s)
5. Its a blackberry!
