I used to work in a Sprint call center. I guarantee that if/when this phone comes to the US it goes straight to Sprint and then 2-3 months later will spill out to Alltel/Verizon and At&t. I knew about the Diamond/Pro back in April or May 08 before they came out.

the lame part is that it is supposedly 65k colors. What good is this hd screen with colors i had on my nokia over 6 years ago? give me that apple 16.7 million color screen at lower resolutions. I just want a touchscreen version of the epson portables on a phone. Resolution is nice but colors matter more to me.

I’d love AWS support on something like this or a Touch Pro HD. Maybe one day, hehe. Too bad we all can’t use the same wcdma bands, but there’s a quad-band wcdma chipset just around the corner if I read correctly

If the keyboard is the same as the Diamond keyboard, it is very good indeed. I have used the TyTN for the last 2 years with keyboard and when I switched to Diamond, I really like it. Sure onscreen keyboard can never be as good as a hardware keyboard. But the Diamond keyboard comes very close.

How exactly does this device handle text input. I know the Touch Pro has a slide out keyboard, but it doesn’t look like this does (no keyboard in the gallery or in the specs). If it is a on screen keyboard, how have they implemented it, because the standard on-screen keyboard on Windows Mobile devices is pretty terrible.

HTC took their time to make iPhone killer…
I wonder why I don’t hear “iPhone killer” from every source that sees this thing – identical (almost) sizes, similar but superiod HD screen, nice-looking user interface, superior camera, 3.5mm on board. It only lacks 32gb memory but we’ll see microSD reach that size soon. Basically its superior to iPhone 3G.
If they have same price in Europe and USA, iPhone 3G 8gb is busted.

Here’s what’s gonna happen…

It will launch overseas tomorrow, cause Europe ALWAYS gets the love on the new hot phones before we do. Fact of life.

THEN in about 4-6 months, HTC will launch a “dumbed-down” version of the phone in the states (bye-bye front facing camera), a-la the Touch Pro/Diamond for Sprint. SOO, salivate all you want over that pretty screen, but unless 3g isn’t that important, and/or you’ve got the extra $700 burning a hole in your pocket, dream on.

Them’s the breaks people….

WCDMA is not the exact same as CDMA.
Notice the bands? Those are 3G bands only for GSM phones. The confusion is b/c of the loosely used terms all the time. And the writers don’t make it any easier for the everyday readers.

I agree with Jimmy. 3.8″! are you kidding me? thats so huge. I’m sitting here going well i guess the iPhones 3.5 is about as big as it gets. The storm is a 3.25. But this monster, 3.8?!?! Holy cow

I’m surprised nobody else has commented on the size. That thing alone will get so many buys from people

@likeabite: WCDMA is GSM 3G. For 3G, GSM switched to using CDMA technology, but it has some differences and so isn’t interoperable with Qualcomm-derived CDMA networks like that Verizon and Sprint uses, which is a shame (especially considering Qualcomm holds patents on WCDMA too)

I agree with you Orga, a contender and potential winner over the iPhone. Yes, the old lipstick on a pig analogy can and will be used as an excuse by the iFans but HTC has pretty much closed the usability gap in the latest generation of phones. The Diamond led the way and now HD will seal the deal.

Finally, at long last, HTC has created a legitimate contender to the iPhone.

I know you iFanbois aren’t going to want to acknowledge it, but that’s your problem. On a spec-sheet basis, this phone matches up in a lot of important ways. Hell, when it comes to screen resolution, you’re beat.

On the other hand, this makes me really hesitant about phone buying in the immediate future. I was planning on picking up the HTC Touch Pro when it (eventually) comes out for VZW, but the possibility of a Touch Pro HD makes funny things happen in my pants.

Glad to see we’re finally getting enough RAM to not have to spend 10% of every day in the Task Manager, clearing stuff out.

That phone looks great. and it does say CDMA
“Network HSDPA/WCDMA:Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz; Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps”

Anyway, HTC makes phones for all the networks, it just goes under different names, like the Tilt, the Mogul, the 6800,the 6900, they were all HTC phones. I hope it comes out here in the US by Dec. 1st so I can trade in my thunder for it if I don’t like it before the 30 day exchange period is up.

I’ll never understand why HTC’s carrier of choice in the US is Sprint, when it would be so much easier to just make their HSDPA/GSM devices available on AT&T and T-Mobile and unlocked a la Nokia.
