RIM eclipses Windows Mobile market share for Q2 2008
Stop the presses and break out the Courvoisier, as we’ve just hit a major milestone in the ongoing mobile OS market share wars. For the first time, RIM and its BlackBerry OS have surpassed Windows Mobile market share during the 2nd quarter of this year. RIM clocked in with 17.4%, handily topping WM’s 12% not to mention RIM’s own 8.9% share during the same period of time last year. That’s a pretty huge step up. While the increasing popularity of the Apple iPhone is sure to ultimately have a destructive effect on both RIM and Windows Mobile market share, it’s clear that the Blackberry is far from losing its relevance in a competitive market. Now if only they could get around to releasing the Bold here in the states….

Balsillie(bb ceo) now confirms that Bold will not be available until the first part of October. A source at RIM tells me there are ongoing network certification issues with the device and that’s why there’s still no firm date — only a range — on availability.

Yea, I keep reading on this blog and others how the iPhone is taking over the world, and RIM is struggling to compete. Man, it sucks to be RIM. Imagine that - doubling your global market share. Gosh - I’m surprised RIM doesn’t just put on sackcloth, wallow in ashes and shut their doors. How can they ever compete against Apple with performance like this?

HTC= 3%
Apple= 7%
Moto & Samsung= 9% each
Palm= 11%
RIM= 54%!!!
Thats a close race. RIM better look out. I hear those shinny new 3G iphones are really working great.

You guys are stipid. No one said Apple is taking over or any of that BS, what they meant was with Apple getting more and more people, obviously Rims and Windows numbers are gonna fall. It will be a long time (maybe never) that Apple reaches Rim and Windows numbers.
Now I would love to see numbers on how many people went from a windows phone or BB phone to Apple, that might be interesting to see.

Symbian really runs the whole world. That is crazy. Anyway, Windows Mobile did not lose market share to anyone. As you clearly notice when you look at the actual article. It gained market share by going from 11.5% to 12%. RIM just simply took market share from Symbian and Linux, who had noticeable decreases.
BoyGenius just seems to be a Windows hater and it’s always apparent. As you can seein a story about RIM and Windows Mobile he just had to throw the iPhone in there, saying it will destroy both brands. 2.8% is hardly a cause for a panic but I don’t see WinMo or RIM going anywhere soon.

Lol, no. It’s just because you always usually comment on my articles. The blue box applies to the author, so if it’s Josh’s post, and he posts a comment, it will be blue-boxed. Applies to all the writers. I might need to get a special color or something though…
Seriously though, the “bias” crap needs to stop. If a phone is hot, it’s hot. End of story. Examples? HTC Touch Pro = FIRE. BlackBerry Bold = FIRE. Nokia N95-4 = FIRE. And yes, iPhone 3G = FIRE. Those are the current 4 I carry around. Where is the bias? I just named the entire smartphone pie. They all serve their own purpose and work well for different people. I’m fortunate enough to rock whatever I want, when I want. That doesn’t make me or the writers here bias, it makes us educated.

I disagree. The purpose of the OS is to provide services to run the applications. It doesn’t need a fancy user interface other than something basic to get the job done. On top of the OS layer is the application layer where applications run. And that’s what WM OS is. As a result, different manufactures can come up with different skins/themes to suit their needs and differentiate them from others. It would be extremely boring if every phone has the same UI (a grid of icons that loads applications):)
