Sony Ericsson Announces September 30 Launch for Xperia X1, No US Love

Well lookie what we have here. Fresh off news of the sexy Sony Ericsson G705 we now finally have official launch info for the even sexier Xperia X1. You already know just about everything there is to know about the first entry into Sony Ericsson’s high-end Xperia line so we won’t bother going over it again. We’ve all been anticipating this smooth QWERTY slider since the beginning of the year but news of delays have continuously been a buzzkill. Last we all heard, Sony Ericsson had pushed the Xperia X1 back to 2009 and the spirits of Sony Ericsson fans around the world were crushed. Well it’s time to buck up, kiddos. September 30th is the date to mark in your calendars – if you live in the UK, Germany or Sweden that is. The X1 will then drop in other markets across Europe, Asia and Latin America over the course of Q4 2008. Now we know what you’re thinking and the answer is no, we’re not forgetting anything. According to the press release it looks like those of us in the US might still be looking at 2009 before we can get our hands on a localized version of the X1. LAME. To quote the release, “Availability dates for North America, China, Australia and Russia along with other countries not mentioned above will be announced by local markets in the coming months.” We already know that there will be an X1a  version packing a US 3G radio so what’s the problem Sony Ericsson?!

The problem as always is the US carriers and cheap american consumers. The carriers want to control every aspect of its release and since there is no outlet for buying unlocked unlike in Europe there is no reason to rush a US release. Plus this is not the type of phone that will sell well in the US where people prefer $99 or free phones or are taken in by iphone hype (as evidenced by SteveGlansburg’s comment) so why should SE even bother with a US release?

Because it’s ridiculous for a manufacturer to leave off 850MHz when they know they’re going to release a version two months later. For what they’re charging for these phones, and for the relatively small sizes of multi-band cell radios, why not just make a convergence chipset that can handle all the world’s bands and call it a day? I am *so* tired of waiting for NAM phones with 3G.

Can’t decide if I want this or the HTC Touch Pro.

Oh wait, by the time the NAM version gets released it will be completely outdated and something new and more fun and thinner will be released.

MadMike is right. SE is really dropping the ball. (shocker). I was so pumped for this earlier this year when it showed up at the trade shows, and now it’s like a distant, unicorn dream or something out of my grasp. I will just get the HTC Touch Pro or Bold. Shame.

That’s okay – I don’t buy Sony products anymore, because they beheaded a goat, simply to promote a video game.

the problem is not the phone. it’s those stupid trade shows and marketing that raise expectations way way up which are never met at release. so it’s a constant stream of disappointment for those who buy the hype.

What boogalooboy said. In Europe, the money’s in the phone, in the US, the money’s in the plan. Until congress gets off it’s collective ass and does something about carrier strangleholds, we’ll continue to miss out on all these great technologies without giving an arm, leg, first born and shirt off our backs.

Yea, the iPhone 3G does suck. It’s great for making $$$, though. :D

Looking at the specs, did I miss something, or did I read that all the bands were covered.

I’m in Europe at the moment, so if it comes out soon, I’ll pick one up. Maybe I’m wrong, though. Hmm…

    Rusty says:

If the stupid carriers in the USA didn’t strong arm the wireless manufacturers, perhaps the USA market would get slick phones. Couple that with the idiot “subsidies” that carriers in the USA impart on end users, and you get the public use to paying 49.99 or less for a phone. Maybe when enough electronic stores (ie like best buy) start selling unlocked phones, the price will come down, and the carriers can get OUT of the hardware end of things, and just be a “utility”
selling the service but not the hardware.

T-Mobile will be carrying the X1 and it will be 3G. The reason the launch as been pushed back is due to a little devcice called the Android. It is scheduled for a Oct release. Also if you didn’t already know the X1 was built by HTC for SE.
