Dell’s Mini 9 Launches; as low as $349

We almost forgot what it was like outside the mobile phone game. You know: Leak -> Wait -> Official announcement -> Wait -> Launch! Sure plenty has been leaked as far as Dell’s latest lappy is concerned, but kudos are still in order. Just yesterday we learned that the Inspiron Mini 9 was set to be announced this week and bam; today they’re ready to order. Let’s take a look at how each of the three variants of this sweet new ultra-portable shape up specs-wise:

$349

  • Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K cache)
  • Ubuntu 8.04 OS
  • Glossy 8.9 inch LED display (1024X600)
  • RAM: 512MB DDR2 at 533MHz
  • Hard drive: 4GB Solid State Drive + 2 GB of online Box.net storage

$399

  • Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K cache)
  • Windows XP Home Edition OS
  • Glossy 8.9 inch LED display (1024X600)
  • RAM: 512MB DDR2 at 533MHz
  • Hard drive: 8GB Solid State Drive

$449

  • Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K cache)
  • Windows XP Home Edition OS
  • Glossy 8.9 inch LED display (1024X600)
  • RAM: 1GB DDR2 at 533MHz
  • Hard drive: 16GB Solid State Drive

There is a downside of course, but isn’t there always? The size is great, the gear is great but the battery is… Not so great. Basically you’re looking at about three hours of juice before the Mini 9 starts coughing and needs another fix. Yikes. The good news is that this little sucker is so small that you should have absolutely no problem fitting a heafty external battery pack in your back with it. Does that defeat the purpose? Hmm, your call.

UPDATE: If you purchase a Studio 15, XPS M1530 or XPS M1330 laptop between 6 am (Central) tomorrow and 6 am (Central) Tuesday September 9th, you can snag a Mini 9 along with it for only $99. Woo!

@Galvatron: Just use Orb (orb.com) and the amount of storage is no issue as long as you’re connected to internet. And really this is great for viewing web-based media and using web applications, not for storing all your media anyways.

Never understood the whole “netbook” push. I have two laptops – why do I need to waste $400 on one with 1/10th the power and features of my 17″ MBP & 15.4″ T61P? The MBP is only 7 lbs – if you can’t carry 7 lbs around for 8 hours, then you seriously need to put the cheeseburger down and hit a damn gym.

Blah, I don’t want Ubuntu on the lower end. I’d rather have Win2K. Oh well I guess the extra 50 bucks will be worth it for XP.

    @MadMike:

Not everyone is lucky enough to be a perpetual student. Some of us actually work for a living. Work which requires shouldering more than just 7lbs of plastic around. Rather than hitting the gym, maybe you can simply stop thinking with your glutes. :)

I suppose the appeal of a mini laptop doesn’t fit with me, especially if I tote my BB and stuff. I guess a full powered laptop still wins out for me. More power to those that this will cater too.

Hey man, I married a Dermatologist. I’m the househusband, and got to semi-retire from crappy corporate work to become a smoke eater in the city.

If it wasn’t for my pension and the benefits I would have just quit. But I got 7 more years till I can be eligible for the early retirement package.

^ How many times must you post your internet-worthy CV? Maybe Monster.com cares … but no one else. ;)

    That is not a CV.

Monster.com is nothing put a cesspool of spam and pyramid schemes.

Engadget has a story that Vodaphone is releasing a 3G Equipped Dell Mini.

That’s one thing where the MBA was disappointing to me. The almost complete lack of WWAN. Even the single USB port was made in a way that 99% of USB air cards wouldn’t fit!

Tale-O’Woe? Am I going, “I walked in 4′ of snow, for ten miles uphill, both ways, carrying my incontinent grandfather who had no legs while smoking a pack of unfiltered Lucky Strikes to my van DOWN BY THE RIVER!” at every chance? No. You can’t do a-hole retort comments well. Listen to about 20 hours straight of Dennis Leary, then write something insulting.

I have never been on Monster.com. No reputable business searches Monster. Unless you are looking for a fulfilling career in a call center at a collections agency.

^ A whiner is a whiner is a whiner, regardless of your flaccid deflections. Take another little blue pill and call your “therapist” in the morning for yet another rise-n-shiner.

“A-hole”? Does the english language make you cower in the corner while pissing down your leg, coward?

btw – Thanks for the confirmation of what your _real_ credentials are. ;)

A lot of phallic symbolism there backbeat. Got something on your mind? What, your boyfriend couldn’t get it up for you last night? Oh, “back” & “beat”. So your boyfriend likes to beat off on your back, right?

Cower in the corner while pissing down my leg? Would you rather me just go right out and say Asshole?

Still, not enough. Your taking cheap shots. You need something without quick wit retort. Trust me – Dennis Leary’s No Cure for Cancer is like a bible.

You don’t call to collect debts. Nothing says “Pay Up Sucker” like a compound fracture to a long bone. Give them a good whack with a Denver tool right in the shin. Or, put there arm in a Hurst Paladin, if it can cut a car, it can cut a limb. ;-)

Seriously is that the best you got?

Still with the whimpy, limp-wristed whining? Shoulda known that street tools are the only instruments you’d be familiar with. Maybe … one day … if your pair ever descends … you can spend a day in surgery with me while you witness what it takes to correct the idiot mistakes you street clowns pull as a matter of “public service”.

Stick with the whimpy, limp-wristed whining. That’s not only your best shot … It’s your _only_ shot. Having to lean on someone else’s ‘material’ certainly makes a straight-up maverick hero out of you, doesn’t it? Move on, coward.

ohh, Your a Candy Striper! I guess replacing bed pans and serving jello is very frustrating.

Hey man, they force me to pull that band-aid brigade crap for two days between every shift rotation. Complain to the city. Besides, I’m BLS not ALS – The only thing I need to know is band-aids go sticky side down. besides, I’m a trucky. I break down doors and rummage through your DVD’s. Well, maybe not _your_ DVD’s. Seriously, how many Directors uncut versions of “Brokeback mountain” do you own?

Again, with the limp references. ED is a curable disease. Tell your boyfriend to go to a doctor and he’d have a nice case of priapism in no-time to make you his bitch for hours on end. I’m guessing you wear the skirt in the relationship.

Still not hitting home. More comic relief than real ball busting.

Ordered the black 1GB, XP, 16GB SSD yesterday, and got a ’sept 19′ ship date from Dell. But, today (a rep from) Dell called and said that I’d be getting it ‘the middle of next week,’ so good news. And, upgrades seem to be a no-brainer with the access panel on the bottom freely available. Question though: since XP OOTB supports 4GB (really ~3.5GB), can I add 2GB in the open slot, or are there BIOS restrictions or something?

Im not sure why everyone is hating in the Ubuntu Version of this guy. I just ordered one and have read the OS is pretty great for the specified uses most people want for a netbook. If everyone complains about the CPU’s being taxes then why not just take some of the load off. I guess I don’t use this as full-featured and its great for the “sit at Panera” event and the like. OpenOffice works fine for me in a pinch and maybe that’s what makes me different. If I need oomph I will carry the 15″ MBP; but most days this guy ought to do fine, especially if they have Verizon WAN and any extended battery that isn’t a pound. Since it’s Voda for WAN in the UK I am hoping its VZW here for the same…
