Google goes to war armed with a new web browser, Google Chrome

After single-handedly winning the online search wars, Google appears to be poised to now enter the browser wars. A comic book fashioned document has appeared online at the unofficial Google Blog, Blogoscoped. The 38 page scanned document details on open source browser project called, Google Chrome. It apparently will have many features of the most recent versions of Firefox, Opera, and even IE 8, including an incognito mode similar to IE 8’s InPrivate mode, tabbed browsing, and awesome Javascript support. Google confirmed the beta project on its blog and announced that it will launch the Windows XP version tomorrow in 100 countries. The whole comic book approach to introducing features is novel and throwing a new browser into the mix is just plain exciting; as long as Google remembers these three words, “No World Domination”. Look for a Mac OS X and Linux version in the near future.

UPDATE: It’s available today.

A dawn of a new era? — There’s definitely not a soul who doesn’t know about the decade long microsoft and google rivalry. Both of these huge goliaths having been constanly pushing themselves to their limits to totally conquer the computer and internet industry. I think I’ll stick with firefox till Chrome moves in and out of beta.

I think I will stick to firefox….I really don’t see google allowing an adblock plugin to be used with their browser.

the comic book is a good read but I think this deserves at least a download and install.

They also mention android so this may end up on the new android phone and isn’t webkit what nokia and symbian use for their phones as well? this should be a good benefit for all related parties.

They are building this to purely drive the competition. Hence the comic book which lays out in detail how this browser is set-up. I honestly think this browser will be more stable in Beta than MOST other browsers are in production.

I love how everyone thinks the “incognito” mode is all new concept, Safari has had it for a while now.

It’s not a “new” concept, but other operating systems have been slow to adopt.

Wow, they really picked a lot of things from Opera, didn’t they.
    – Address bar below tabs
    – The default tab page
    – Popups scoped to tabs
    – Chromeless windows

You’d think they would have had a “completed” beta ready for public consumption when they said “Tomorrow.”

Well, they have 11:55 to get it out before they are late.

I’m Chroming right now and it’s awesome… simple, fast and simple. Plus this page loads REALLY slow on my dino-top that my job provides me with.. but with Chrome, it seems to be loading in 1/2 the time. I like the Omnibar and NEW Tab window too… I’ve got the feeling that the more that I use the browser, the more it will know about me and will work even better for me… eventually, it will write my reports and walk my dog for me too.

I don’t know about that quickly. We’ll probably see FireFox 4 hit beta real quick with a lot borrowed from Chrome.

IE? Well, IE is a train wreck hitting a school bus full of innocent little children with Autism on Christmas on the 5:00 news. IE 8 is too far along for them to scratch the entire project and start over.

The Firefox people said it best that Google was frustrated. People weren’t listening to them, so they decided to do it on their own. I don’t think they care if Chrome becomes super-popular or the #1 browser. They want change. The best way to shape the market is to compete in it. Then they have people copying your ideas to sell more of their product. They almost ensured that, because that’s what they want.

They want FireFox, IE, Safari, Opera to all steal their ideas and use them.

Scrolling on sites like espn.com is a bit slow(er) than Firefox, but other than that, this looks great. I’m still Google will have this figured out in no time.

acid3.acidtests.org shows that chrome gets a 79/100 versus 74/100 for safari versus 59/100 for firefox versus 15/100 for IE6

My intial experience was pretty solid. I did notice one thing though. On google maps with IE you can hide the search area and have a full screen map, with chrome you can’t. Not quite sure why that little option is not present in Chrome. I like the browser so far, I’m going to try and use it exclusively for a while and see how it goes.
