So, how is this different from what I’ve been using with Zimbra’s network edition? I mean, I connect to my work’s Zimbra server via iPhone’s MS Exchange email setup. Zimbra network edition acts like an exchange server. This OTA sync function via iPhone was blogged on the Zimbra site back in July 2008. yahoo has done a good job of just leaving Zimbra alone and letting it continue its development without trying to lock it down or change it to suit only yahoo’s need.

if you are up for it, you can download and run the open source edition on your own server.I myself selected to go the hosted route and pay a hosting provider.A lot of big companies choose the commercial version of Zimbra for their email solution as well…

Just FYI – Yahoo bought Zimbra a while back and runs it fairly separately from the main Yahoo. Zimbra is the company behind the software (the exchange competitor). You still need a hosting provider to run their software and push the email out to you — you can find their hosting partners on their website.

We’ve been using http://www.01.com/ for more than a year. They’ve been very supportive since they migrated us over, and Zimbra has improved markedly. The iPhone and native BES support are big new improvements.

Zimbra is open source alternative to Exchange. It uses activesync so you can OTA sync with Windows Mobile and presumably the iphone (since it now supports activesync) very easily. It also syncs with Palm, Blackberry and the Nokia eSeries. Some devices are supported natively, some use a third party app like NotifyLink to handle the syncing. Zimbra has done a lot in the past year or so in adding syncing support natively.

I have only used a WinMo device with Zimbra so I cant comment on how well the iPhone works. The WinMo syncing worked great!

So is this a free type of Exchange? Can you have it wirelessly sync calendar and everything with a Blackberry, Palm, etc… device?
