Sony delivers a Point and Shoot with HD Recording

Leave it to Sony to put 720p HD recording into the hands (or shall we say, the pocket) of the masses. Starting tomorrow the 29th, Sony’s latest addition to their Cybershot line of Point and Shoot cameras, the DSC-T500, will be available for pre-order. This 10-megapixel camera will record wide and full-screen 720p video at 30 frames per second in fine, standard and VGA recording modes. It also will support zoom while in the recording mode and will record in the MPEG4 AVC/H.264 format. Up to 10 minutes of video (cool!) can be recorded at a time to a 16GB Memory Stick (lame!). Can’t decide whether you want to record video or images? No worries, you can do both. The camera has a mixed recording mode that allows you to record video and snap 3 photos at the same time without interruption. The T500 will also feature a 3.5 inch transflective LCD touchscreen, Carl Zeiss lens with 5X Optical zoom, and sensitivity up to ISO3200. It is expected to retail for approx $400 and will ship in Late September. Not too shabby for a pocket camera.

Well, I’ve had a Kodak point and shoot that did 720p HD since November of last year…..

Kodak V1253 – takes great pictures, does 720p recording at 30 fps, so yeah….

yeah but that is a Kodak and this is a Sony..

But seriously. Taken as a whole with the HD and all, the sony has an awesome feature set…it trumps the kodak imho.

its lame because its a memory stick…

sony needs to stop being so proprietary and put an SD card slot in their cameras…

Sony is getting much better at the digital camera game.. and their memory sticks don’t cost as much as it used to.

True, i think in general Sony > Kodak as well.

I was just pointing out that this is far from the first point and shoot to do 720p.

But Sony sucks simply because of the whole memory stick thing. I won’t buy their crap just because of that.

I was not familiar with the Kodak but knew of a panasonic and samsung model..to me the sony feature set as whole is great Those extra features will bring over people who are on the fence about spending the extra $$ to get only the HD recording. More than the kodak, panasonic or samsung, I think this camera will be more widely adopted and will bring HD recording to the masses.

I do agree with you on Sony..the memory stick thing is a deal breaker for me personally, too..I can appreciate it features but I myself would not buy one…

How can it POSSIBLY be recording in MPEG-4 and only be able to fit 10 minutes of video into 16 GB??? My brother can record lots of 720p onto a 4GB SDHC card using his Sanyo Xacti HD1000, which also takes great stills.

i think it is probably matter of sony limiting the recording to 10mins..

i have also owned the Kodak for a year now.
How the hell you know the Sony is better if you have not tested it yet. And only 10 minutes? Mine records with no limit. Your review seemed more like a commercial.

Well since the camera is not out, how can I test it? I am just relaying the specs as announced not giving a hands on review. Kodak vs Sony? On paper the Sony is better.

Sorry if you think I sound like a commercial but I just thought it was an innovative camera and wrote it up as such.

what a shame. If only it would support SDHC instead of Memorystick, then this could be my next camera.

Yea I hate the sony proprietary business but please stop shooting the messenger. Kelly only reported what she saw so I do not see what the issue is. The camera does look great and even though I own a Kodak do not read other people’s stories or blogs if your only aim is to criticize. Thanks for pointing this out Kelly.

I love my Sony Supercybershot. It makes great video with excellent audio pickup, but its audio doesn’t upload with the video when imported in IMovie (Mac). I have to covert the movie files to AVI on my PC before I can use them in IMovie–very time-consuming. I want to upgrade to a P&S that shoots movies in HD, but between the tedious conversion process and the irritating proprietary memory I am looking at other options. Tried the Lumix TZ5, but its audio is not good in movie mode, so I returned it.
