Sony Announces Three New Walkman Lines
Sony has just let the cat out of the bag and unveiled its latest Portable Audio Player lines dubbed B-Series, E-Series and S-Series. From bottom to top Sony has focused on functionality, form and affordability with its new portable players and we can’t say it failed in any of the aforementioned categories. That said, what about storage fellas? Sony’s new players top out at 8 GB which, for many, just doesn’t cut it these days. For users willing to sacrifice storage space for versatility and style however, these puppies may be right up your alley. The high end S-Series line touts features like active noise cancellation, Sony’s SensMe Channels and up to 40 hours of playback while the low end B-Series includes FM radio and a low entry price of $45. What about the B-Series? Well, no one talks about the middle child. From the press release:
The S-series of Walkman noise canceling video MP3 players come in two different storage capacities in black:
- The NWZ-S736F has approximately 4GB of internal storage and will cost about $150.
- The NWZ-S738F has approximately 8GB of internal storage and will cost about $180.
The E-series of Walkman video MP3 players will be available in the following configurations:
- The NWZ-E436F comes in black, red, pink, blue, has approximately 4GB of internal storage and costs about $100.
- The NWZ-E438F comes in black, red, pink, has approximately 8GB of internal storage, and costs about $140.
The B-series of Walkman MP3 players come in two different capacities and four colors:
- The NWZ-B133F player has approximately 1GB of internal storage; comes in black, red and blue and will cost about $45.
- The NWZ-B135F player has approximately 2GB of internal storage; comes in black, red and pink and will cost about $60.

Lame.
I am the only one who automatically assumed this was a phone as well?
Being into technology, my criticism is that these are a bit late (iPod nano knock-off anybody?). But, for a guy like me who absolutely despises the iPod nano, this little guy would do justice for me. That and I just need a music player, no movies necessary for me (seems kinda dumb to watch a movie on such a small screen).
But, I wonder what all those icons are. For sure, you gotta have a music library, FM player, help, and settings, but that leaves 5 other icons. Maybe, messages and bluetooth connectivity? That would be a nice complement to the pho– err… I mean mp3 player. I would buy it, but what’s the difference between the 3 different models?
@jcutner – no, you are not.
I was gonna comment about how 8GB may not be much for some heavy user people, but iPhones come in 8 – and that’s for way more than just music.
Ooops.
Carry on people… LOL
This is cool, going to get my kid one when he turns 3, its decent and cheap. I know he’s going to love it bc he wants to be like me, with my ipod.
so sick of hearing about everyone copying apple. This looks nothing like a nano imo.
these are targeted at the people who don’t about being “trendy, popular”. And it’s made by sony. So you know these are probably really dependable devices.
I’ve always wondered this – but how do you connect and sync non-iPod devices like this to a mac? Is it through clunky software? 180.00 for the 8GB device here isnt a bad deal, but I really love iTunes. Anyone?
Do these have ad2p bluetooth. I’m tired of the bug in 4.5 blackberry when you skip a track it gives an error and skips two tracks then plays. I would get one of these if it has it
I have the NWS-706F which is a stick-type Sony walkman. Other than dealing with Sonic Stage, which is horrible, the unit is a delight. It has active noise cancellation, but the headphones incessantly fail, and ultimately I have been using it without the noise cancellation.
Still, it’s a great unit for working out, walking, etc. and far lighter than an ipod. Sony knows how to do music players.
I agree 8g is ‘too small’ for that size of unit.
H
There is a typo. The E-Series is the middle child that no one talks about.
