HTC announces S740, think Touch Pro’s baby brother

HTC Touch Diamond not working out for you? We get it, you want a physical QWERTY keyboard. Oh, Touch Pro a little too big? You want something a little more simpler, huh? Starting today, HTC looks to fill that gap. They’ve just announced the HTC S740 and it features the same styling as the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro, features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a numerical keyboard on the front. The only difference? It runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard. Here’s a run down of the specs:
- 116.3 x 43.4 x 16.3 mm
- GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
- WCDMA/HSDPA: 900/2100 MHz (we’d guess there is a 850/1900MHz UMTS/HSDPA version in the works, supports HSDPA 3.6Mbps and HSDPA 7.2Mbps)
- 2.4″ QVGA screen
- 3.2 megapixel camera
- Qualcomm® MSM7225, 528 MHz
- 256MB flash ROM, 256MB RAM
- microSD slot
- 140g
- 1000mAh battery
- Wi-Fi b,g
- aGPS
- Bluetooth 2.0
- FM radio
Pretty much the most feature-packed Windows Mobile Standard device, no? Enjoy the pics while we phone up our HTC ninjas — we want this thing!

You’re not the only ones. I’ve always had a soft spot for HTC S7xx devices.
when are any of these coming to america??
Except its only a little bit hideous…
seriously is this thing a joke!? look at the size of that center ball!! its enormous!
I AM STOKED
any ETA?
i want one as well! *-*
great device!!
Not as sexy as I would like but def nice!!
How about a carrier? I was waiting for the Touch Pro but maybe I will wait for this!
is it touch screen?
Love the size…
Always was a fan of the T9 keypad on the front and the sliding Full QWERTY…
Just wish they had the 3G work for the US and I would forgive them for putting WIN 6.1 Standard
I like the specs, and I believe that Windows Mobile fills a lot of the holes left by both iPhone and BB Bold. In fact, I see the following as the shortcomings of each:
iPhone:
- QWERTY keyboard
- No replaceable battery
- No multi-tasking
- No cut & paste (this is just silly)
- No video (while a 2MP camera, it takes some of the best pictures I’ve seen)
- No email server searches
Bold:
- UI
- HTML email
- Good web browser
- Screen size
I think the HTC Touch Pro (and now the S740) fills all of these, but, for the life of me, I don’t understand why they don’t put a 3.5mm jack for music. Particularly, when they put an FM tuner in it.
It won’t necessarily come out for the USA, will it?
Check out the S730… even PDADB.NET had a listing for a USA version of that phone, and I have not been able to find it for sale anywhere(yet…haven’t checked in a month or so).

not exactly an original design. i have the samsung sch i760, and this appears to be the same exact concept. the specs on this kill my phone, but i definitely think the i760 has a much more efficient design, mainly the soft keys and the circular nav thingy need to be next to the key pad to open up a ton of potential screen space. how can they have such a large phone with a tiny 2.4 inch screen?
This would be a cool toy!
It’s so cute. I must have one!!

“is it touch screen?”

This would be a great replacement for my BlackJack II and Moto Q 9h. I hate styluses. For me, it’s either a fully finger-friendly UI or no touchscreen at all. I hate having to use both hands for anything when it comes to my phone.
@ Steve…
But I have the 4.5 OS on my Curve and have HTML Email capabilities and with the Bold going 4.6 OS, it should translate over as well. I can be totally wrong though.
I don’t know if the screen size of the Bold is a shortcoming honestly. It’s a tad bigger than the Curve which is a good size in itself, but it has the same resolution of the Iphone, so it’ll be sharper on the smaller screen. I see that as a plus.
I am eager to see this phone in action though
very neet looking bar phone..
probably best one i seen for a while.
meh…

Thats great…
Take a Touch Pro and instead of making it better by making the screen bigger you add redundant buttons on the front.
perfect
I don’t know why, but I REALLY hate this… The Touch Pro and Diamond were sexy, but this, this is fugly.
Weird… I can’t decide whether this is either really ugly or really sexy. I do get the T9 keypad… it’s a phone first.
Even though Att has the tilt I think the touch pro will replace it, that would be very good… I do think it’s comping to Sprint Verizon At&t T-Mobile

It’s not a ball, it’s a touch section. Sort of a divot so to speak.
