Battery running low, then go for a walk

Self-powered cell phones may become a reality if M2E Power has their way. The company has developed and tested batteries that are powered by human motion. The batteries are housed inside a charger which can be thrown in your purse or pocket and pulled out when you need to charge a device. Right now efficiency is marginal as it takes about 6 hours of cumulative motion to provide 30 to 60 minutes of call time. That is a lot of movement for not a lot of talk time but you have to start somewhere we guess. With cell phone companies seeking “green” alternatives to power, this battery charging technology may someday find its way into your phone. We’d prefer built-in solar panels though, that way we don’t have to walk around too much…

yeah totally would rather solar powered charging but this could be cool if they optimize it

Yeah, this is pretty cool though! I mean, imagine an airplane trip to France and listening to music or using wi-fi on your phone or laptop… ah, I think I can die a happy man :)

That aside, what kind of motion are we talking about? I mean, can I just go driving around and get it charged?

It’s most likely kinetic energy. The same kind of motion used to power the Seiko Kinetic watches. However, these watches use so little power that just your daily routine will power them for years.

Perhaps a combination of the two technologies would be ideal. This way your phone/device can charge while you walk with the phone in your pocket, and can also charge while you’re in the sun.

Very innovative, I’d like to see who will run with this idea and take it to the next step
