Rogers launches BlackBerry Bold today, maybe available tomorrow…

Canucks, your wait is over! Well, almost… According to several commenters who have chimed in, the long-awaited Blackberry Bold has been released by Rogers today but they can’t seem to find any in stock. Hmm, a little déjà vu, iPhone users? Maybe RIM and Rogers were too busy blowing up balloons for their celebratory launch and presentation, but anxious customers won’t have to wait much longer. According to RTT News, Best Buy Canada will be carrying the Blackberry Bold 9000 in stores all across the country starting tomorrow. So for those of you a little disappointed to find your local Rogers Wireless backordered this morning, or those who just don’t want to bang up their current Blackberry to win a new one, fear not! Head over to Best Buy tomorrow and you may be able to snag one up for $399.99 if you’re willing to sign the next 3 years of your life over to a minimum $45/month plan. Otherwise, the Bold retails for $599.99 without contract.
Thanks, to everyone who sent this in!

good to see some new contributors on here.

Yes, the price was quite shocking to me, too… but I think some people have waited so long that they’re willing to hand over the dough.
Thanks for the welcome here!

Still waiting in the US of A.

ATT will need to get this price down to 200 or under. I remember the Curve price dropping quickly to 99 after the release last summer.

might be a silly questions from a newb….I’m going to be in Calgary come Tuesday of next week for vacation. If i see a Bold, whether at Rogers or Best Buy, buy it, unlock it to use on Tmobile here in the US, would that be any different than getting one unlocked from ATT? Any big software differences I should know about? I’m curious if I bought it and later went to ATT, would the Bold’s 3g work or crap out like everyone is saying the cause of the delay is for ATT?

BG…have you seen the “side by side” browser test results that are floating around: BOLD vs iPhone? Any thoughts? Have you done similar?

@mule I believe both AT&T and Rogers are running the 850 and 1900 MHz bands, and 850 UMTS/HSDPA, so I’d imagine unlocking a Rogers phone would work fine on AT&T. Might want to do a little research on that first before you take my word for it.

So…went to Rogers in Ottawa today on Ogilvie road where they had 2 bolds on stock. Pricing was as posted $399/3 years, or $649 to buy outright.
Let me preface the next by saying that I went with every intention to buy it; but did not!!!
Firstly, the thing looks pretty crappy, my 8310 is so much nicer and sleeker, and let me tell you (and I hate to sat it) there is no comparison with the size, design and pimp value on the iphone-that rogers is pushing so hard with POP material.
Second, thinking critically about this handset, I use BB for the kick ass, no compromise email. So for this feature so little has changed since BB7290 and maybe even before, so there was no point changing. In reality I have owned recent N85 NAM and iphone that I realize that to justify a new BB they really have to step up on the fun factor. They have small little changes, but nothing major. Comon BB 2MP, in the days of 5-8MP cameras?
Anyhoo, a couple of noteable upgeades, screen, WIFI, and 3G, all good features, but no desperate need to upgrade for these, especialy with pretty crappy design, and definately crappy build quality-right BGR? (remember ond BBs that you could drop from a second story balcony and they would survive?
Price….dont get me started, RIM and ROgers dropped the ball.
My 2c, now im even doubting Javelin with 3.2MP will get me going,
For now 4.5OS on 8310 will keep me just fine!

Supermartin,
Just wondering, what does it take to “get you going?”
Some say the BlackBerry BOLD is the greatest smartphone RIM has ever produced. Maybe the BB Javelin/Niagara will turn your crank. Or maybe the BB Thunder/Storm? And don’t forget about the BB KickStart.

wait a month or two, the price will probably drop, or 3rd party places (like the soruce, futureshop, best buy, etc.) will get the phone and have their extra discount on it.
The phone is nice, I’ve played with it a few times, but I little too pricy since I’ve already spent about $1000 on phones this year so far.

@supermartin… great decision. I too am a long time bb user and although the Bold has notable upgrades, it doesn’t seem worth paying a premium just to have the latest bb.
@CarBob… Certainly the Bold will be the greatest BB ever produced… it’s the latest version! Don’t applaud RIM for offering standard features on an overpriced device.
I’m not running out to buy an iphone (tmo user), and I’m def not running out to buy any new BBs either.

Hi
Well I was one of the lucky ones to get my hands on this new toy in Montreal! I’m a heavy user and from all the Blackberry phones I have ever used, I have to admit that this is the best one RIM ever produced. Yes launch was today but apparently UPS screwed up on the shipments so all stores will have them tomorrow. I own the iPhone too and I got to say that the browser looks as good as it does on the iPhone. So I’m really happy we waited this long. Got my Rogers Blackberry Bold todat which I already unlocked (i’m in the unlocking business). People RUN tomorrow to get it, it’s worth every penny!

So how many BOLDS did Rogers sell nation wide on launch day? 30 maybe?

I love my BOLD its the nicest looking device on the market. Get one in your hands and you’ll see!

I returned my iPhone (buggy buggy device) and got the Bold. I couldn’t be happier with it. The browser may not be quite as good, but its very close and everything else is better.

I went to a Rogers store after work yesterday to pick one up and when I looked around, they weren’t even advertising the thing! So I asked, and they laughed. The cute girl behind the counter said she thinks they pushed it back again even though it was advertised for a 21st launch (she was clueless). She said her boss was pissed and they called every store in Kitchener-Waterloo, and nobody had them. So, she added my name and number on a page long list with a promise to call when they come in. I’m leaning on buying it outright. Rogers Website has it for 599, best buy/future shop lists it at 649.
Great Launch guys… :-/

Just to give everyone a heads-up. I went to Future Shop and they had them in stock. I purchased it outright for 599, but had to argue with the store manager, as Future Shop had it for 649 (apparently below their cost as I’ve been told). After a bit of arguing about their “Price Guarantee”, the manager told me that they don’t have to honour the guarantee if it “doesn’t make business sense”. After 4 more minutes, he caved and gave it to me for 599. It’s unlocked and working on AT&T incredibly well!

Anyone in downtown vancouver has had any luck with the bolds?? i’ve been looking everywhere and haven’t even got a glipse of a bold

Futureshop sucks since they’ve been bought out by Best (worst) Buy. They put it on the shelf for 649 to put it on “SALE” for 599 later on.

Bold isn’t very interesting, would never buy it because the camera is only 2mp.

@ Carbob:
“Some say the BlackBerry BOLD is the greatest smartphone RIM has ever produced” of course it is, question is….do do you upgrade from a 8310 with OS4.5 (takes movies, much better browser etc etc.) RIM still totally misses the boat-it does email just like any other old BB. Its going to take much improved MULTIMEDIA to get me going.
Curve email=Bold email
And really, all I use it for is email.
@Bill-I am totally with you, keeping 8310 until at least Javelin, or the Thunders 5MP (LOL)
