HTC Touch Pro hands on!
If you’re a big fan of Windows Mobile, there’s no doubt you’ve been looking at the HTC Touch Pro. It’s the finest Windows Mobile device to come out of HTC so far, we’d even say it’s better than the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. In terms of hard specs, this is a beast! Here’s a recap of them in case you were wondering:
- Qualcomm® MSM7201A™ 528 MHz
- Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
- 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera
- 288MB RAM
- 2.8″ LCD with 480×640 VGA resolution
- Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, dual-band UMTS/HSDPA (900MHz/2100MHz or 850MHz/1900MHz)
- GPS
- Bluetooth
While the HTC Touch Diamond is nice, slide-out QWERTYs definitely rank higher in our book. We’ve only spent a little bit of time with the Touch Pro, but as mentioned earlier, this is probably our favorite touch-screen Windows Mobile device. The QWERTY keyboard is comfortable enough without being overly large, the screen is vibrant and crisp, and you get the same TouchFLO 3D experience that you get on the Touch Diamond. The 1350mAh battery provides enough juice to handle your beatings for around a day, and voice quality was great when talking on the phone. Check out some of pics for now, and look forward to the review!
Thanks, Stan!

Yes, can you compare size comparisons to Iphone, and BB Bold in your review?

I think this is pretty sweet. I picked up a Samsung Omnia and am pretty disappointed by it. Hopefully this phone wouldn’t be a let down if I decide for it to be my next purchase. Right now it’s up in the air between this, the BB Bold, and the Xperia if it ever gets a release date.

I agree with Jorge - it’s too thick. I want to be able to keep it in my pocket without people thinking I’m really happy to see them.

I’m concerned about size, how does it compare to the Mogul (HTC Titan?)
It looks really thick in the pictures, but its hard to gauge without a side by side.

Skinnier for sure, but I don’t know. I find people who like these types of phones like to show them off to other people and thus, the bigger it is, the better it is, eh? Nah, it’s cool in my book.

What do you think the odds are that it’ll get BBConnect if/when it hits Verizon?

How thick is it compared to BlackBerry 8320?

I might get this if it had Wi-Fi (heard it did in some other site but no sure), more memory than the Diamond (I think I heard it had less internal memory), and microSD slot(hot swappable and again read it somewhere that it did). If it was also the same price as the CDMA Diamon, then I might just get this instead, if not then I’ll just get the Diamond. Anyone know if the screen resolution is the same as the Diamond yet?

I want this phone so bad… do you think they’ll enable video calling?

is it going to be offered by any carrier in particular at a discount or you have to buy it on your own with no discount ?

I’ve been keeping an eye on the XDA site and nobody has been able to unlock the North American 3G bands. My question to BG - I noticed you list in the specs two different models, one for Europe/Asia and one for the US. Can you please make my week and tell me this is the NA version?

Rumor has it (WMExperts) that Sprint will launch the Touch Diamond on Septemebr 2 with the Touch Pro about a month behind.
Personally I prefer the on-screen keyboard. I’m actually using the Touch Diamond keyboard on my Touch Vogue. Hopefully Septemebr 2 is the right date.

i second the need for a bb bold and iphone comparision to be included in the review. thanks bgr!

i have a few requests for the review if you could tackle them, thanks.
maybe could we get a comparison shot or two with the bb curve and/or htc tilt.
also, if people are so worried about how it sits in your pocket, you could include an in-pocket shot (no homo).
p.s. device looks rad

Balla - The Touch Diamond has a 4gb on board storage and the Touch Pro has a microSD slot for swapping. I do believe the cost is higher considering more money to make compared to the Diamond.
Everyone else concerned with size - Consider this it has a slideout qwerty keyboard. Slimmer phones with smaller processors don’t have the same functionality as the Pro does.
Love HTC now I need to figure out a way to get one of these to review for myself. Hahaha any suggestions?

It is thinner than TyTN. About same thickness as TyTNII.
When I was using TyTN, I don’t put it in my pocket. I have a leather case that can clip to my belt. I found that very handy and to reach for the phone when I needed it and I didn’t have to worry about dropping the phone from my pocket.

As for pricing with contract, in Australia we can get the phone for free with Telstra. For example, Touch Diamond is free when you sign up for a $80 plan contract for 2 years. Touch Pro will probably be free on a $100 plan contract. And yes the Touch series in Australia supports 850 MHz 3G network.

why does the screen look so dim?

Can you say Tilt II…please?

Wish they didn’t go back to the numeric keys across the top. Feels like a flashback to the MDA. Much prefer the setup on the Tilt that keeps them in a usable config. Guess HTC figures we’ll all be using the touch screen to enter numbers now.

In your review can you explain why this beats the X1? I thought the X1 would be the WM King.
Can i PLEASE get a comparison between this and the iPhone on video playback? I know the Touch Pro has a higher resolution but what is better in these 2 catagories?
1. Do you prefer high resolution standard screen size or standard resolution big screen size?
2. Which one has the ability to handle big time action scenes better?
Oh and which one is better on web surfing

This is a great site for people looking to compare sizes of things.
