T-Mobile 3G Launch Plan for 2008

It looks like everything is coming up T-Mobile these days. Sweet new handsets, first crack at Android; it seems like nothing can rain on your parade. Well… Yes, and no. T-Mobile’s 3G deployment schedule was just leaked and we can finally fill in the blanks for the rest of 2008. If you happen to spend most of your time in one of the listed cities then your day just got a whole lot brighter. If you don’t, all we can say is better luck next year.
The following markets have already launched, or will launch on the specified date:
- Austin / San Antonio
- Baltimore
- Houston
- Las Vegas
- Los Angeles
- Minneapolis (launches today)
- New York
- Phoenix (9/16)
- Portland (9/18)
- Sacramento (9/17)
- San Diego (9/15)
- San Francisco (9/24)
- Seattle (9/23)
The following markets are scheduled to launch in 2008, no launch date available:
- Atlanta
- Birmingham
- Chicago
- Dallas
- Denver
- Detroit
- Kansas City
- Memphis
- Miami
- New England
- Orlando
- Philadelphia
- Tampa
- Washington, D.C.

Well AT&T better speed their rollout up, if Tmo can do all these by the end of the year then AT&T should be ashamed of their 3G network coverage.

AT&T should be ashamed of many things; poor customer service, overpriced rate packages, and a horrible deployment of the iPhone 3G (although we don’t really know who to blame).
I’ve been waiting a long time for T-Mobile to step back in the ring and start fighting. 3G network, HTC Dream, Blackberry Kickstart and Javelin, and home phone service for $10 is a big sign that they want to be a top contender in the wireless championship.

I just wanted to clarify Zach that these are market launches not simply city launches.
For example, the Los Angeles market launch will include several cities within the Greater LA vicinity.
Fortunately for T-Mobile customers, the market launches will be pretty expansive and solid and won’t be patchy the way the 3G launch was with another carrier.

Too little too late as far as I am concerned. Up until last week I was with T-Mobile from their launch in California. But the history of bad phones, declining customer service and lack of 3G (and 2G coverage) were all the push I needed to finally jump ship.
I’m now happy to be on AT&T with an iPhone in one of their recently rolled out 3G markets. And if there is one thing I have learned, you can not trust AT&T’s 3G coverage map. 3G coverage in California is now far more expansive (at least in California) than what their dated map indicates.

last time I checked, there is no TMo 3G in Los Angeles yet. Do we have a confirmed date, or was it a mistake to stick it in the first column?

How do the small cities (around the big ones) fit into this launch?
e.g. Kalamazoo in relation to Detroit, MI
Do they get 3G too?

you would think the city includes the whole metro area. for instance phoenix would hopefully include glendale, peoria, tempe, mesa, etc…

@windupbird: I would chalk that up to a sloppy cut and paste. The source page indicates that LA is due for launch on the 16th.

I’m excited for these latest announcements from TMo. I’m glad they are jumping in with other competitors in terms of technology. When I worked for them it seemed that they were content with only their JD Power awards and nothing more. This signals I think a change in overall strategy. You need killer phones to remain in competition. Overall people want more and more and great CS just isn’t enough. Is Kickstart to be a 3G phone? I don’t remember…
