CDMA Touch Diamond outsizes its GSM competition

If you’re awaiting for the impending arrival of a CDMA version of the HTC Touch Diamond, you might want to stop and consider these spy shots. What you see above is, believe it or not, a side-by-side comparison of the GSM and CDMA HTC Touch Diamond handsets. Notice something amiss? Yeah, we see it too. The CDMA incarnation is, well, rather portly. We don’t have the official specs, but suffice to say that these real world shots paint the CDMA Touch in a bit of an unflattering light. For what it’s worth the poster seems to think that the CDMA Touch sits quite comfortably in hand. We’re not so sure, but will obviously have to reserve final judgment until we can handle one of our own. Until then, consider yourselves fairly warned.

i was hoping joshua actually did some research before posting. the cdma version has 1340mah battery whereas the gsm version is 900mah battery. the back is larger due to this, but many people will probably enjoy longer battery life in exchange for several mm increase in size.

The extra size is to accomodate a bigger battery.

Boogalooboy is probably correct. The CDMA (original) Touch is slightly larger than the GSM version, but the CDMA version has an 1100mAh battery and the GSM version has a 900mAh version…trust me the extra 200mAh makes a huge difference, especially because the CDMA version runs on EV-DO Rev A (3G).

The Touch Diamond (GSM) also has a lousy small battery and it’s probably useless if you use it for all-day data, as a result. Kinda sounds like the iPhone (hahahaha)

Sure that’s not a Raphael or Herman below the Diamond? That almost looks like a shot of the Touch vs. Touch Pro.

Personally, I’m a fan of somewhat fatter phones (think Nokia N-Series). My iPhone 3G constantly feels like it’s going to slip out of my pocket. I never liked the RAZR or phones equally thin. When I briefly had a Nokia 5310, that was the WORST!

Not to flame a fire, but everybody here is wrong. It is only an optical illusion. Because the top phone has angled sides it appears thinner, but it is actually the same size., bust out your rulers, and measure it.

This is good information. How does BGR get this news? I’m really impressed (with the Diamond) and this piece of news!

    Steven says:

It does have a bigger battery for one. It has a different back also. You can compare it to the iPhones’ backs (CDMA=iPhone1 & GSM=iPhone 3G).

Besides, haven’t CDMA phones been bigger than their GSM counterparts for a few years now? Curve, Touch, etc.?

    So what.

CDMA devices are always thicker than their GSM counterparts. These days, all of these phones are so small, a little extra girth doesn’t make much of a difference.

Hrmmm…so it’s probably the same thickness as my Tilt. That’s not bad but I’d rather have the GSM version, more flexibility in the long run.

    Evilhomer says:

CDMA phones have historically been thicker devices to accommodate larger batteries. However, you aren’t necessarily getting longer batter life because CDMA uses more juice than GSM phones. If you don’t believe me, just look go to Phonescoop and compare the difference between devices that are available in CDMA and GSM versions.

And Micklik, I wondered which jaggoff would be the first to use this post, as in every other post, to bash the iPhone, which has nothing to do with this thread. The iPhones battery is on par with every other 3G device out there with wifi, GSM, and a much larger and sharper screen with anything else. It’s better than ANY 3G smartphone I’ve had including the Tilt and the N-95. People look for any reason to bash the iPhone, relevant to the thread or not. If you are going to bash a phone for battery life, just take anything else out there with 3G and you can say the same effin’ thing about the battery life.

hasn’t it been stated for weeks now that the CDMA version is bigger than the GSM version because of the longer battery life of the CDMA version? i love BGR and everything, but this is a pointless comparison that displays information that everyone should’ve already been aware of awhile back. no surprise to me. i’m still waiting on the CDMA touch pro.

The devices looks to be about the same thickness to me… the GSM version just has the angled back, whereas the CDMA version doesn’t.

I would be surprised if the CDMA version is more than 2mm thicker.

Evilhomer – The Tilt is not the best benchmark as far as battery life on 3G devices. My HTC Dual and BJ2 does a much better job versus the Tilt and blows away the iPhone 3G as far as battery life is concerned. On par? Well, it could be better considering all of the hype.
