HTC G1 “Dream” Receives FCC Blessing; T-Mobile 3G Confirmed

T-Mobile customers, it’s finally your time in the sun. Sure you might have been neglected in the past but now it’s time to dry your eye. Forget about the Samsung T919, although it is pretty sexy; you’re about to get a sweet handset that the entire world is waiting to check out. Whether it goes by the name “Dream” or “G1″, HTC’s first Android device is now confirmed to be rocking a T-Mobile US-compatible 3G radio. Yes, it was already rumored but it’s nice to see some confirmation come by way of the FCC. As for the handset itself, sure we would’ve liked to see that touchscreen display take up a bit more of the device’s face but hey, at least we know you’ve got some rip-roaring 3G on deck. Well, that assumes you live in the still-sparse coverage area. Hopefully the Android OS, a solid 3 megapixel camera and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard will be enough for those outside of 3G coverage. Nothing has come up that suggests the projected mid-September release is inaccurate so it’s definitely time to start checking your contract status and tucking some extra cash away.

YES!!!! Can’t wait to see what the final product looks like. This will probably be my next phone since the Bold continues to be delayed. I hope it looks similar to the HTC Touch Pro or HTC Diamond.

On what are you basing your comments about screen size? There are no pictures or diagrams, that I can see, of the front of the phone on the FCC website, only the back and side of the phone.

I agree with Randy.. This picture only shows the back of the phone. If the screen was that small this phone would be a total disaster..

Agree with Randy and Goclub , the diagram shows the back (Battery, Micro SD and SIM card)

Nothing about the front so it should be sweeter in the front , I have been waiting for something like this to hit T-mo in years, if the battery (in black) was the screen, that would of been a real disaster for whoever is involved with this phone!

Allegedly prior rumors place the screen at 5″x3″? Is that accurate? It also seems like it has a bit of a curve to it (to fit the form of one’s face)…interesting.

So black with dark green trackball, black with brown trackball and white ‘nude’ with original color trackball? Seems very sidekick-ish to me. Hopefully late Sept., not Nov. like one analyst predicts.

This is supposedly an image of a proto. Lots of empty real estate around that screen…

I think this is what tells us it’s not coming out in September. Does anyone ever read these documents?

reuvypoo… A lot of the current rumors say that it will be announced in September and released in October. Just because they asked for confidentiality until Nov 10th doesn’t mean they can’t release it sooner. In fact, you are pretty much guaranteed that they will announce it sooner and not let the first pictures of the device be the crappy FCC images. They could have picked a date a couple months after their planned announcement just to be safe…

I believe this will have GPS. My only source is a story on AndroidApps.com talking about a GPS-based game. This of course doesn’t mean the T-Mo phone will have GPS, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t considering it’s target competition.

Of course it will have it or at least if it dosent than i dont know what the guys at HTC are thinking.

I mean isnt Android designed to work with google earth I heard tons of applications are going to be made so android can tell where you are where you friends are etc… if this dosent have GPS than we are basically idiots if we buy this.

    from tmonews…

“We have confirmed that the HTC Dream will be released on T-mobile with a new kind of advanced SIM card. We find that a little weird since the phone is being sold to current T-mobile customers first, who all already have SIM cards.”

    @GP7

If THAT is what the Google Android G1 will look like, then I’ll say, “So what if it only has A-GPS, I’m getting it!!!” However, I am going to call that a fake simply because the phone looks too damned sexy. (I am afraid to believe that it is the real deal and be disappointed later on) :P

Well, RIM, it was wonderful while it lasted; but now it is time for us to part ways. It’s not you. It’s me. I am a guy, and I prefer younger and hotter ones :)

What they mean is probably USIM (UMTS SIM Card - a.k.a. 3G SIM Card). at&t originally marketed sim cards as “Smart chips”. This was a dumb marketing gimmick to the American public who had no idea what a SIM card was. Later on they dropped the name and started calling it SIM Card. 3G SIM’s have more capacity (I believe 256kb) vs standard GSM sim cards. I hate when companies come out with their own names for things that are commonly known all over the world by other names (T-Mobile originally called SMS messages a “Ping Pong messaging”…
