BlackBerry Bold Gets a Hefty Price Tag on Rogers
Ouch. Our friends north of the boarder just got a bit of a rude awakening as the Bold received pricing for the Rogers network. How does $400 CAD sound? That’s right folks, according to the leaked flyer pictured above Canadian BlackBerry fans on Rogers will be paying through the teeth. Let’s see, with the declining US dollar that works out to about… carry the three, multiply by… $6,482 USD. Ok, those calculations might be a bit high but $400 CAD is still a far cry from competitive with the iPhone 3G as Rogers customers were hoping. That hefty price tag will also come with a three-year contract and, though this hasn’t been confirmed yet, your soul.

that is too much money to go with a 3 year contract..

Maybe they raised the price on the Bold to make up for lowering the plan pricing on the iPhone 3G. They know that demand for the Bold will be pretty inelastic due to the fact that it will be purchased by crackberry addicts and businesses (who will pay out the nose for these phones). I guess that’s why they call them crackberries - people will pay any ridiculous amount to get it. It better not have buggy software, or people are going to be ticked off!

It actually comes out to $378 US, but yes, still too high. I wouldn’t pay $380 for this, moreover with a 3 year contract! I wonder how much it costs without a 3 year contract.
(remember when contracts were only for 1 yr?)

What did you expect? After coming out with the original plans for the Iphone, people shouldn’t have their hopes not too far up for a better Deal on the BB-Bold.

Holy crap! I hope that when AT&T sells the bold next decade, that it isn’t crazy expensive like this!

I love how blantly slanted the Apple bias is here with this headline. Where was the headline a year ago titled “Apple charges an arm & leg for iphone”?

I would gladly pay up to $500 USD for this device.

Slanted? Dude you can buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360 for $399. It’s not slanted because we’re comparing whats out NOW, who gives two shits about the price last year? Either $199 for an iPhone 3G, or $399 for a BlackBerry Bold. There is your comparison.

You took the words right out of my brain BG.

DF: You are so right on. I saw this headline and immediately realized that BGR also failed to point out how ridiculously priced the first iPod was back in 2001, or how expensive the original Mac was. They also failed to criticize the pricing of the Porsche Cayenne, the original Sony WEGA TVs, cable internet service during the late 90s, and the ridiculous per-subscriber charge demanded by ESPN. Therefore, in addition to the obvious Apple bias you pointed out, I sense a Porsche, Sony, cable internet provider and ESPN bias. The BGR must be stopped immediately!
On second thought, maybe you’re just a clueless conspiracy lover. Since, all things being equal, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one, I guess we all know what the answer is. Well, everyone but you, that is.

ATT must have some sort of agreement wth HandJobs that they can’t sell the Bold until Apple is back up at adequate stock levels. Every single carrier that is getting the Bold is launching before ATT. I call BS.
Sorry this is off topic, but since BGR hasn’t posted anything about an ATT realease date in a very very long time, I had to vent on this thread.

Ok, maybe not an apple slant. Usually its just expected new devices are hefty in price, you seem to be pointing out the obvious about any new electronic today.

I believe the comparison is the sites unbias towards Apple last year vs it’s bias of RIM this year.

shit i will just do what i did with my curve. purchase it on ebay then activate it on robbers. i damn sure hope that we get some legitimate competition on the gsm network in the near future. its only a matter of time.

Rogers sound pretty cheap in compare to the BB-Bold on ebay for 3150$ US.

It’s 899.99 with no contract.
I’d rather buy a laptop

It may seem like a lot of money, but thats only because the Iphone was priced so great via rogers (not by their own accord, of course). I remember when the 8800 launched at $499 on a 3 year contract and when my Ipaq was like 450 on a 3 year. It may seem high to non Canadians (edit:non-rogers customers) but relative to what Rogers charged for phones, its right on the money, and right around what I expected them to charge. Hell, the curve is only now 200 bucks on a 3 year, so for the “Cadillac” Blackberry, it really doesn’t seem outrageous (Relative to other Rogers prices of course, compared to other carriers, it makes me weep).

Carriers in Canada are able to get away with murder. It would be nice if other handset manufacturers were able to exert the same leverage on the carriers as Apple seems to be able to do.

Considering the BlackBerry 88XX series is around that price range, and with the AT&T Tilt gaining popularity and being just as high priced I dont see people fuzzing about dishing the reported $199 to $299 maybe even $399 (thought I thought that) for quite possibly the greatest mobile handset in human kinds existence!
More and more people are bracing what the cellular wireless industry is offering. Wether its priced a tad bit higher or not. If its good, its good. Face it!
Its like taking the expensive smaller fillet Mignon over the bigger cheaper porter house steak.
September 1st for the BlackBerry Bold Launch Date? I even heard from someone, that heard from a ninja that itll be out the 15th of september and the shocker was on the price tag. Againg thought id easily shell out the mula $$

STOP SHITING ON RIM, LTD. NOT COOL!

When I was talking to a rim rep a while back about the phone, he kept saying the phone was going to be expensive and that we would use the phone to bring people in to the store, and then sell them the curve instead. He said there were three types of people that would buy it; corporate people who don’t pay for it, people with too much money that will buy anything, and BB fanboys.
The phone is a very nice phone, and to a lot it’s probably worth it to them. I would wait till third parties like the source, futureshop, best buy, etc. carry it, it will probably be a lot cheaper (example: n95 is 199 at rogers, 79 at the source)

It’s too much. Really interested to see if that price holds.
If ATT follows suit, I’m not buying. Not until it comes down. I’ll stick with my Curve or go in a different direction altogether.
And now with the Google phone coming out - MAYBE BEFORE THE BOLD - RIM is really screwing this up. Big time. I don’t get it.
Can’t wait to see what ATT does.
