Windows Mobile 6.1 for Motorola Q9h gets official
This update has been unofficially floating around the interwebs for a little while, but if you’re the type that likes to color inside the lines and only deals with officially sanctioned firmware, today is your lucky day (assuming you also happen to own a Moto Q9h). Motorola has loosed their Windows Mobile 6.1 update to the general public, bringing a moderate number of new features complemented by slightly improved device response and speed. The update itself is a pretty straightforward affair, though make sure you do a full back up before clicking on the “install” button. Android is in the land of trashy mobile vaporware like savaje and palm os garnet. I’m just pissed off that is will be like five more months before a similar update appears for the Blackjack II. Samsung can bite my shiny metal ass.
This is the ATT branded upgrade – not sure how this will work on European versions of the Q9h. Is the upgrade widely available on other markets too?

Does this upgrade fix the phone wake-up issue … meaning you could not turn the screen on by hitting a button without that button strike performing its purpose? Did that make sense? Hitting the q to wake the phone up would be like hitting the q with the phone awake. It was annoying.
I had the “unofficial” update a couple of weeks ago – it’s exactly the same as the official update. Some pretty cool things – the sliding homescreen panels, threaded texts, fully functional task manager, copy/paste, etc. Make sure that you have your unlock code handy since it will relock your device.
I have never criticized BGR. Ever.
But now I wonder why other sites have been reporting since much earlier today that Rogers will be selling the Bold next week for $399 with a 3 year program and BGR says nothing? Not even reporting that it’s unsubstantiated… or something.
For me, BGR is the final word on such matters. Unless there’s no word at all.
And still those that have the HTC/at&t Tilt are left waiting…again.

Because so much shit has been said about the Bold recently, we’ve sat quiet and watched all the other sites post “confirmed” release dates and other erroneous information while we’ve been standing strong on our previous post with our release timetable. Not saying the $399 is inaccurate, it’s just that we’re currently checking/confirming the pricing. Since it’s such a sensitive subject and since RIM has botched the release so horribly, we’re waiting until we’re ready to post some confirmed news on the Bold.

Wish I’d read your post before I updated! I’m up here in Canada (on Rogers network) using an unlocked AT&T branded Q9h. I just installed the 6.1 update and now the phone is asking for unlock code or valid network SIM. I, foolishly, did not backup. Ya reap what ya sow I guess. ANY HELP??

Did you buy it unlocked? If it’s an AT&T Q9h then the original owner could likely get the code from AT&T. They’ll give it out to the owner as long as the customer has been in good standing for 3 months.
Can anyone tell me if the GPS functionality of the Q9h is still available after the update?
GPS still works fine with Google Maps and Windows Live Search. Many folks who updated a couple of weeks ago think the GPS locks on quicker. YMMV.
Ran the upgrade on a AT&T Q9 that I had got the unlock code from AT&T. Got it unlocked again fore use with an old blue AT&T plan. I have found that the gprs settings for media net and such are locked and I can not erase them. Various programs, live search and google maps, are trying to use the media net setting instead of the mmode settings. Anyone have any suggestions?

Seems WM6.1 is available now (at least on ATT) as an upgrade – but what about the European (and non branded) versions? Is/will the upgrade be widely available via Motorola SW Updater?
Would it be safe to upgrade the European version with the ATT upgrade when the WCDMA 2100 band is in place of WCDMA 850/1900 on Euro-Asia versions? I feel like a chicken and would’nt try it myself.

I’m sorry to be such an idiot, but can someone tell me how to get custom ringtones working on the Q9h with the Windows Mobile 6.1 firmware loaded on it? I have some short 15 second MP3’s that I made myself, I’ve copied them to the device with ActiveStink, but they don’t show up as choices for ringtone or custom ringtones in Contacts. Help?

You need to registry edit the phone to allow ringtones > 300kb to be used. First get a registry editor like PHM or Resco.
The regedit is: Go into HKEY_CurrentUser –> ControlPanel –> Sounds –> then hit the Values softkey. Select FileSizeLimit and delete the number in the VALUE DATA field. Reboot and you can enjoy your MP3’s without the size limitation.
Regarding WM6.1 for European (and non branded) Q9h, it is not available yet via the Motorola Software Update app. If you tried to update a European Q9h with the ATT version of the update, the app would tell you that there is no software update available for your device.
