Android to Come Out of Hiding Next Month?
Word on the street is that Google recently held a briefing where it discussed the coming of Android, which may be sooner than we thought. Apparently the world is set to get its first taste of Google’s mobile juice on September 17; actually, only T-Mobile US customers will be able to partake. T-Mobile has apparently scored highly-coveted exclusive rights to sell what has been dubbed the HTC G1, the first mobile handset that will ship with the Linux-based Android OS. The rub of course, is that it will only be a T-Mobile exclusive for a week as the G1 will supposedly become available to the rest of the world on September 24. That may seem a bit odd but it’s actually very smart; T-Mobile has essentially placed its name in any and all Android coverage between now and the release. Smooth. Alleged specs for the HTC G1 give it a massive 5″ x 3″ touchscreen display, a 3 megapixel camera, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and 3G connectivity though we can’t say which networks it will be compatible with. The logical guess might be T-Mobile 3G compatibility due to the launch schedule but then again, the carrier hardly has nationwide 3G coverage. T-Mobile might be the only choice however, if the G1 is to have any US 3G compatibility. AT&T has not yet officially signed on to peddle Android-powered devices, nor has Verizon Wireless for that matter. At the same time, we have to imagine it won’t be long before they jump on board. In terms of pricing, there will supposedly be a discounted price of $150 during the first week of availability through T-Mobile. After that, the price is expected to jump up to around $250. T-Mobile has not confirmed any of this but if it is true, expect the advertising to start rolling out very soon.

Tethering?

tethering will be the same (it’s not going to be on your phone, it’ll be through the comp).

That is a huge touchscreen display. I can’t wait to see what this phone is “really” going to look like. HTC is no slouch when it comes to design, so I’m expecting this to follow suit. It will have to be a stunner in order to stop me from thinking about leaving T-Mobile and heading to AT&T for the Bold or the iPhone when my contract is up in October.

@Siam Luu, so the phone will have an internet sharing app? I currently use my dash this way, usb to computer.

Sooooo Excited!!!!

I can’t wait until it hits Sprint, as they signed on right after T-Mobile last year for the ability to sell Android Devices.
At that point, my Instinct will be history…. lol (can anyone say give the phone to my little sis?)

the dimension is 3×5″, not the screen
if it’s the screen size, it’s gonnd be VERY HUGE (bigger than PSP)
if tethering is supported, I’m gonna give it a shot

it will be very interesting to see how the iPhone crowd reacts to the 3″x5″ screen. We all know how they love to claim that HTC’s standard 2.8″ is too small. Will the new Dream’s be too big?

That’s awesome. I’m hoping this will be a boom for the devs who have been trying to port Andriod over to other HTC devices. If that’s the case, there won’t be any need to buy the G1 if you’re on AT&T, just wait for the Touch Pro to drop and flash Andriod (or run the emulation) and be done.

I’m kinda thinking the same thing about the screen size. I bet those are the phone’s dimensions. I am betting that the screen size is 3.5″ like the iphone. Both the new video and the old video of the phone look about that size.

oh, and imagine how awesome video is going to look on this baby IF it has a 3″x5″ screen!!!

The entire phone is 3″ X 5″… not just the screen.
I just hope it looks more elegant than that prototype video.

Good job T-Mobz. Redemption!

yes tmobile might be able to redeem themselves after all!

I’m not callin redemption until I see a G1 in retail dress, pimping AWS 3G. Ive been a Tmo user since the Voicestream days (rockn a moto P280) and I’ve heard a few many calls for “redemption”

Dayum, No one talked about the pic of Pamela Lee… Well for me, I would have stayed in the dress with her two (OO) buddies and NEVER came out for any release!

And before I get flamed by the village poster idiots, I’m not hating Tmo. Love Tmo, service, their flat rate global roaming etc. All I’m saying is Tmo is acting like that hot prom queen that doesn’t put out. (know matter how much money ya throw at it

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the September 17th date just for already existing T-Mobile customers, with the 24th being the day of sale for anyone else through T-MOBILE? Is the article suggesting that the G1 is not a T-Mobile-only phone?
