If Google Wants to Make an Extra Billion Dollars Tomorrow…

…It should start charging $1 per month for Gmail service. Twitter users probably represent one zillionth of the Gmail user base (yes, that is an exaggeration) and here is the Twitter reaction when Gmail went down for less than 30 minutes today:
Bravo Google, the world needs Gmail. I would venture a guess that at only $1 per month Google would likely retain well over 50% of its current user base. That’s a whole lot of dollars…

Guess I’m the only one in the world who doesnt use Gmail and didnt even know there was an outage, my Hotmail was working fine all along…:)

it should be free and I cannot see paying for it.

I would pay $1/mo. but I would want some extras - like push email to my iPhone and guaranteed uptimes.
It was down for over an hour for me and I missed a lot of emails (I know because I was expecting them). Now, I’m pissed this happened to a free service, I would be litigious-ly pissed if it happened with a pay service. That’s for sure.

You would be litigious-ly pissed? What the fuck. Wow you missed some e-mails. If they were that important you would probably have a job that had a push exchange server so that wouldn’t have been the problem. Douche bag.

You can disregard the lost email comment - I just got a whole slew at one time. It was just delayed.
All the sudden my iPhone explodes with 50 messages.

@Mark:
If I paid for a service, I get that service. If it goes down, I get money back for when its down. That’s how thew world works. Go fuck yourself.
Maybe I run my own side business at home that relies on Gmail, asshole.
Hell, maybe I just want my fucking e-mail dipshit. Like I said, I was pissed - but its free, so not much I can do about it. But if it was paid, YES - I would ask for compensation for the downtime. If they refused, I would pursue it further. Maybe not lawsuit, but definitely arbitration.

I think it would be a bad idea. I wouldn’t mind paying a $1 a month, but the bigger picture of profit could be lost for Google. It has the internet search business in a choke hold and a major part of that comes from Google’s “1-stop-shop” free setup.
You google some information after signing into your custom google homepage, after checking your google mail, in which you got an invite to a party which your friend told you about on google messenger, which you place in your google calender that syncs with your (smart phone brand here), so you print out directions from google maps and decide for kicks and giggles to view on google earth and since you love the view so much you post it on your google picture site (picasa).
Lengthly point.. don’t be pennny wise and pound foolish. You’re in the dictionary! Companies spend years and untold fortunes trying to corner the market. Don’t give it away for some quick gains that won’t matter down the road.

if you paid $1.00 a month and it went down for an hour, i’d bet you’d spend more money, time and effort to get compensated for loosing an hour. let’s see, that would be .00138 of a dollar they would owe you. even the almighty blackberry has outages. get real.

I think they would have to have a mix of free and paid. I have several accounts. Some I use just to back up email and some that are active. I don’t want to pay for all of them. Yes - I’m that cheap

I wouldn’t think twice about paying for it.. Of all the free emails gmail is the best and worth paying for.

Gmail is nothing to me so go on google charge $100 per month if you want to.

I have several GMail accounts, for various purposes, including my business (Apps). If GMail was a paid service, I would not be willing to provide Google with all of the personal information they get. I am willing to let Google have personal information in exchange for services, but not willing to pay Google for the privilege of serving up advertising based on my information. The whole reason Google gets away with collecting the data they do is the free services they provide.

I have two email accounts… both
myname@gmail.com and myname@yahoo.com
I think if Google ever charged.. as much as I do prefer it over Yahoo or any other email service for that matter I think I’d just jump ship to Yahoo…. well call me crazy but if it was like $5 - $10 for the year.. or even for the lifetime I’d get it.. who knows heh

Luckily I pay for a domain that is directing all my mail to Gmail. I can just repoint it somewhere else. I already am paying for MobileMe (mainly because I really want sync between my iCal and Web Calendar App), so I might as well take my email there.
I would prefer if Google just charged for a premium service with added features and removal of ads and keep the basic free with ads.

everyone leave madmike alone. he doesnt know what a blackberry or an exchange server is. he is too busy looking for people to sue and getting upset when a FREE service is out for an hour. you should have seen how mad he was when netzero started charging. get a life.

100 pages of complaints…and that probably barely scratches the userbase.

WTF guy? Typical Apple user, stop smoking that pole. Arbitration for a dollar/month service? You need a taste of real life you little bitch.
If you needed a real email on the go, you’d have a blackberry and not an iFudgePacker

I said I was pissed and said I would get litigious if it was a paid service. It’s free, so I’m just angry and not even anymore because I drank enough Jim Beam. So right now I couldn’t give two shits and a fuck.
Oh and 100 pages of complaints on twitter alone, not to mention the 3500 or so posts on the Gmail Down google group. Yeah, like I’m the only one.
Fucking Assclowns. I’m MadMike for a reason - because I’m always fucking angry. Get it cuntrags?
