Apple preparing new Cinema displays for early 2009?

Apple alluded to several upcoming product refreshes in its recent earnings report conference call, and if these rumors hold true, it looks like the Cinema Display line could be amongst the first to go under the knife. Macrumors is reporting that Apple will be releasing a new line of Cinema Displays, possibly to coincide with the annual Macworld conference in January. The improvements and changes will include LED backlighting across the board, which would be a considerable feat considering the sheer size and cost of their current 30″ display. LED backlighting provides significant brightness and energy consumption improvements over LCD screens, so we’d be happy to see this shift, but as of now we’re a bit wary of this coming to fruition.

I hope they add displayport, hdmi, and/or composite inputs to justify the higher price of the displays. They probably won’t. That said, I’ll take a 24″.

they have needed to update these things for YEARS now. They’re outdated, overpriced, and a waste of money in comparison to the competition. My guess is that the new displays will resemble their iMac designs, as many customers are immediately drawn to the displays in store.

I want a 30″ LED backlit display, but I am not paying $4,000 for it. The most I would pay for a 30″ would be $2,000 and even then, that’s pushing it. For $1,800 each I would buy two without a second thought.

I wonder if they’re considering the shell of the design to be made of recycled materials?
