T-Mobile launches 3G in Las Vegas

In case any of you living in Las Vegas were desperately waiting for T-Mo to pull the 3G switch, your day has finally arrived. As of this morning, T-Mobile has officially went live with 3G in Las Vegas. You’re still stuck with the standard run of the mill crappy handsets if you want to use a 3G one, but T-Mobile promised us they’ve got an HSDPA-capable device coming soon. Yay.

I dont think AT&T screwed up at all. Look at what having the GSM 850 and WCDMA 850/1900 got them. They control the US market in terms of what phones are released here. By having a different frequency, AT&T has basically avoided being a “dumb pipeline”. Look at how carriers are internationally…..people dont care about who they get the service from, they just want the best phones. Thats why Nokias are the best selling phones world wide. But in the US, if you want to have a “cool” phone, you have to have AT&T service because those “cool” phones are optimized on their network (lets face it….out of the 4 major carriers, AT&T has the best portfolio of phones offered).

Dont get me wrong, I dont like what AT&T did….but I hardly think it was a screw up. Billion dollar companys dont become billion dollar companys by screwing up. The move was cold, calculated, and effective….just like Kobe Bryant’s jumper. Black Mamba aka the Doberman!

BTW….seriously, Maciek is right. At this point in time people who are on BGR should not be asking “what frequency is T-Mo using?” or “Can you use an international phone on T-Mo?”

Hey the 90’s called, wanted to let you know that Google got invented!…..in case you were wondering, the 90’s was using an international cellphone on T-Mobile in the US.

Well, it depends which side you’re standing on. If you’re the operator - then yes - it’s not a screw up..it’s a HUGE WIN; it allowed at&t to become the villain dictator of the US mobile industry which in Europe would not go as easy due to anti-competitive laws. If you are the customer - you do get screwed because you’re at the carrier’s mercy. When you look at the carrier’s offers in the US they have nothing to offer except be the data pipe that they should be. The second they will have something to offer - i’ll be absolutely up for spending more money. Even my beloved T-Mobile is a mess when it comes to their mobile web offer. In Europe every country T-Mobile operates in has web-n-walk portal with EVERYTHING (Including adult section..it’s what sells). Here T-Mobile’s wap portal simply SUCKS. Verizon’s service is more tight than a 16 year old virgin, Sprint…simply no comment. Also personally I think handset exclusivity should be banned by law - and here I do have to stress that I STRONGLY DISLIKE iPhone so even if it was available on T-Mobile - I would stay away from it - the simple reason is that by all means i think it’s a beautiful design but again it’s so tightly controlled by the carrier / and apple that I simply feel too constricted by both of them…The reason I like Nokia is because it’s truly an open device and no carrier tells me what I can or can not use on it and all I need is the data pipe to it AND if it wasn’t for at&t’s eagerness to create all those new frequencies perhaps the world would not be as fragmented as it is today.

Anyone know what data cards can be purchased that will work with edge and 3g (in the US)?

Most UMTS cards don’t list 1700 as a frequency the run on.
