In case any of you living in Las Vegas were desperately waiting for T-Mo to pull the 3G switch, your day has finally arrived. As of this morning, T-Mobile has officially went live with 3G in Las Vegas. You’re still stuck with the standard run of the mill crappy handsets if you want to use a 3G one, but T-Mobile promised us they’ve got an HSDPA-capable device coming soon. Yay.

That HSDPA-capable device from T-Mobile, is it the HTC Dream running Android?

its a stock picture i’m sure, they just needed something better than the ghetto 3G announcement that was taped up on a Tmo store in previous story.

Anyone know what band T-Mobile’s 3G will be running on? I hear it’s going to be yet again another non-world-standard band and worse yet it’s not AT&T 3G compatible (HSPA 850/1900 MHz) either. =/
Too bad they couldn’t secure the 900/2100 MHz band for 3G, because then the cooler 3G handsets that come out first in Europe and Asia could be used stateside…

Oh do Phoenix next!!! & start putting out better 3G phones… Get with the program T-mo!!!

Derrick has a good point about 900/2100 MHz band, anybody know why TMo failed securing it and instead went for the 1700/2100 MHz?

They had to use 1700/2100mhz because that is all they had to go with. That is what the fcc auctioned off. It was that or nothing.

T-Mobile went for 1700/2100 because that’s what was available.

It just so happens that 900Mhz is an unlicensed band. Remember the early cordless phones? Yep, they used 900Mhz. And there was no way T-Mobile could be compatible with AT&T’s 3G network because AT&T has most of the licenses for those bands. T-Mobile didn’t really have another choice.

are you in Austin, Fort Hood, San Antonio, Waco?
if so, watch out tonight, tether your phone and check your speed test

I know there’s talk about tmobile getting a SE phone. I really can’t see Tmobile selling any SE phone directly. I have been with Tmobile for 9 years and if history has taught us anything, once tmobile ends a vendor contract they have never brought one back. Example of phone vendors they stop selling are the Treo, Seimans and Ericson.
I am not questioning the release of a new SE phone. I am not stupid, I just feel that it might not be sold by Tmobile directly. It might work similar to how the N-Gage or QD was sold, where the devices were not availble at Tmobile but were only available at electronic stores such at EB or Circuit City or by contecting Nokia directly.
Keep up the good reporting BG and btw austons 3G should be up today aswell.

You can use overseas phones cuz they all have 2100 band. It might not work as well as a T-Mo 3G phone but it will work.

T-mobile will start carrying SE. if the tm506 is a big hit SE will jump on the AWS train and bombard the t-mob with 3G phones.

Siemens sold their Handset Div. to BenQ, but after a year under the new owner they went down the drain. Don’t think they make anymore Handsets.

YES IT IS A PICTURE OF MANHATTAN. AINT THAT SOMETHING. LOL

@Gabriel Mak: Incorrect. European phones use the 1900/2100 pair for uploads and downloads respectively. T-Mobile will be using 1700/2100. These two pairs are NOT compatible.

Just so you all know, the Austin market 3G has been lit up as well. I am in San Antonio and using a Nokia 3555 to tether and I am averaging about 400 kbs. The markets listed for 3G cover more than the named city.

sorry for my incorrect info. So, it is true that we cannot use any europe/asia phones then? This is gonna suck cuz the only way to get on 3G is with a t-mo brand phone. Thats BS.

Anyone have a complete list of the currently available 3G compatible phones from t-mo?

Nokia 3555 & 6263 Samsung t639 & t819

Thanks for the list. Unfortunately, they all suck. I will wait for the touch pro or the touch diamond if they get 3G. if not, i am sure nokia will make the 1700/2100 version for E71 & E66.

It really surprises me that people who read BGR still ask questions like “what frequency will T-Mob use”, “Will Euro phones work on T-Mob”, “Euro phones WILL work on T-Mob 3G”, or better yet…bitching about 1700 Mhz frequency. People…first of all if you have to ask these questions, perhaps you should Google T-Mobile US AWS and you’ll get all the scoop. second of all the 1700 Mhz frequency may be brand new and T-Mobile may be the launch carrier but that doesn’t mean T-Mobile will be a needle in a haystack. Canada just had their 3G auction…guess what frequency they were auctioning off… YES…1700. Then GSMA (That’s GSM Association) is in favor of 1700/2100 as it’s much closer to the Euro 3G and therefore the device radios are not as complex as with at&t 3G chips. at&t is the carrier that bastardized 3G frequencies by wanting to be the first in the game so they are the ones that created WCDMA in 850/1900 band…just like they did 5 years earlier with shoving GSM 850 down people’s throats because they owned 850 frequency on their TDMA network. So they probably though..WTF..let’s fragment the world even more.
If it wasn’t for at&t all we’d have today would be GSM 900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 2100/1700/1900. Instead we have 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 850/1900/1700/2100. Be prepared for your fav carrier at&t to announce WCDMA 700 (aka LTE 700). So quit bitching about the frequencies, blaming T-Mobile for at&t’s screw up, asking questions that have been answered MULTITUDE of times since 2006 (the AWS auction). Just google.
And as a last note..
Euro phones WILL NOT work in the US on T-Mob’s band
Within a few months there will be MUCH more phones which will support T-Mob / Euro frequency (because it’s easier to make them..less frequencies needed).
And now I’m ready to take the heat…pour away.
