Nokia May be Working on a Movie Download Service
Typically when a rumor starts off with “I’ve been informed by a strange but totally plausible source”, it’s a safe bet that you shouldn’t get too excited. There are always exceptions to the rule though and since we may have heard a bit of rumbling around the bush ourselves, we’ll run with this one. Apparently in the next few months, despite the fact that the Nokia Music Store has only been launched in a few regions (and has not been greeted with much fanfare), Nokia will reportedly be launching its own movie store. Details are a bit scarce but the concept is actually quite interesting. Basically the service will allow you to pay a monthly fee and stream unlimited 320 x 240 H.264 videos (with AAC stereo 96 kbps audio) directly to your handset. Movies can be watched on the handset of course, or even on a television via the TV-Out on some Nseries handsets. Perhaps the most interesting and unique part of the service is that you will supposedly be able to easily initiate a movie purchase at any time during playback with a single button click. The movie will then be dispatched over night to your address on file from a Nokia-partnered DVD retailer. No, it’s not as tech-forward as a set top box solution but it is a pretty cool way to integrate mobiles into Nokia’s offering.

This is cool except for the part that I’m on Tmobile and streaming movies on my N95 would take 10 years.

i believe Nokia is just getting too big for it’s own good, each new service looks like an unfinished project that they leave behind to go pursue another one , which in turn is left uncomplete.
phones that are left full of bugs, services that are regional deficient, applications that are forgotten as soon as they are uploaded to their site. till when???

Until VGA screens hit on Nokia devices, they should postpone this service.

Are they really expecting people to use TV-out with QVGA res movies?

Imagine if this implemented Microvision (www.microvision.com)

You are a bit over exaggerating there Asem.
“phones that are left full of bugs” That’s just not true. Not all Nokia phones are bug free, but they hardly are any worst than Samsung, Moto, LG or not to even talk about SE now days. Crashing/buggy phones are the ones that make your customers go away and that hasen’t happened to Nokia, quite the other way.
Other things you have mentioned i agree to some point at least.
But at least they are trying to make network around S60 smart phones for games, music, movies and so on that many of the other big players are lagging. They just started with these services i’m sure they will get better
Again i don’t get SE. You got Sony with all the music, movies and what not behind you and they don’t do sh1t.
Hopefully we will see higher res screen with coming up N series line up…. thought Samsung dosen’t seem to be making them either so it might be they can continue it for some time.

Motorola already has one (in some EU countries), not to mention Apple. Both sideloading, though. Don’t need a source to figure Nokia are working on this as well.

Well there were rumors (just last week, if I remember correctly) about Microsoft and Nokia working together to implement a Zune client on Nokia phones. Whether that would include video/movies, who knows, but I’m just putting two and two together here. Microsoft needs to push the Zune brand and Nokia wouldn’t have to do a whole lot if Microsoft is managing the media store. Makes sense to me.
