T-Mobile 3G launches on October 1st, officially…kind of

This one has been rumored for quite a while, but if a small piece of paper taped to the window if a T-Mobile store is to be believed, we now have semi-official confirmation that the carrier will be flipping the switch on its 3G network on October 1st. The high-speed data network should go live in 27 of T-Mobile’s most populated markets, which is good news for anyone that’s growing a bit tired of their lowly EDGE connection (read: everyone). The carrier has been testing its 3G network in New York over the last several months, though we’re not aware of any similar tests in any other markets. Whatever the case, lets hope that they pull this off in conjunction with the release of some hot new handsets, as their current crop of 3G-capable phones is, well, awful.

I love Galvatron, he’s the ultimate underdog. Kind of like rooting for the fat kid to win in a race.

3G is so overrated. It’s Not all that fast and if folks are happy with the shitty 3G speeds from at&t, Sprint, and VZW they should try a real connection like 30mbps FiOS. 3G? *eyeroll*

I have been a T-Mobile customer for the past 7 years. I stood up by them my experience with Customer service reps was mostly positive. I in fact never liked selection of cheesy phones T-Mobile had, and always bought unlocked phones I liked. Last year, I bought Nokia e61i, smartphone, with 3G but for european standard. Last week, I upgraded to Nokia e71 3G(usa version) which apparently don’t work with T-Mobile 3G Coverage. I called up to ask them what is the problem. The was that T-Mobile is not using USA 3G standard, they are using a “mix” of frequencies 1700 & 2100 Mhz. Which have to be both present on your phone for 3G to work. T-Mobile is not using either US or European standard or any standard at all. A drawback to such 3G service lack of choice for smartphones which can benefit high speed data connection. What T-Mobile is offering to go along with their 3G plans, are some retro phones which 3-4-5 years old, behind european and asian markets, or the new questionable G1 a google phone. This decision leaves real business community of users which needs fast internet (3G) in dark.
